[Epidemiologic significance of the immunofluorescence typing of Chlamydia psittaci].

A group of 39 strains isolated from pigeons, parakeets, parrots, sheep, goats, cats, guinea-pigs, mice and humans were immunotyped by a one-way or two-way cross-reaction micro-immunofluorescence test. Eight immunotypes were found. Among them, two new immunotypes were characterized: a cat conjunctivitis strain and a mouse inapparent respiratory infection strain. The immunotypes of feline pneumonitis and guinea-pig conjunctivitis, recently described by Perez-Martinez and Storz, were confirmed. Three human strains were similar to avian isolates, while a fourth was identical to that of feline pneu

Granulomatous nephritis in psittacines associated with parasitism by the trematode Paratanaisia spp.

Trematodes belonging to the family Eucotylidae are parasites of the kidney and ureter, and affect several bird species. However, psittacines have not been identified as hosts of these parasites. Three birds, an adult female blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna), an adult female blue-winged macaw (Propyrrhura maracana) and an adult male white-eared parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis) were admitted at the Veterinary Hospital of the Fundação Zoo-Botânica de Belo Horizonte, Brazil (FZB/BH). All three birds had severe dehydration and cachexia. The blue and gold macaw presented with dyspnea, apathy, and incoo

Distribution pattern of phthirapterans infesting certain common Indian birds.

The prevalence and frequency distribution patterns of 10 phthirapteran species infesting house sparrows, Indian parakeets, common mynas, and white breasted kingfishers were recorded in the district of Rampur, India, during 2004-05. The sample mean abundances, mean intensities, range of infestations, variance to mean ratios, values of the exponent of the negative binomial distribution, and the indices of discrepancy were also computed. Frequency distribution patterns of all phthirapteran species were skewed, but the observed frequencies did not correspond to the negative binomial distribution.

[A case of acute hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by contact with budgerigars (bird-breeder's lung)].

A 58-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for repeated episodes of dry cough, low-grade fever, and gradual development of dyspnea on exertion. Chest computed tomography showed diffuse ground-glass opacities in both lung fields. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) showed an increased number of lymphocytes, and transbronchial lung biopsy revealed alveolitis and epithelioid cell granuloma. The acute onset and the patient's living environment suggested summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis. However, anti-Trichosporon antibody was negative and a definitive diagnosis could not be made. Familial outbreak of psittacosis as the first Chlamydia psittaci infection reported from Turkey.

Psittacosis, also known as parrot disease, parrot fever and ornithosis, can be transmitted to humans by inhaling dried excreta of infected birds like canaries, parakeets, parrots, pigeons and turkeys. Unless it is specifically thought of and investigated, the diagnosis of psittacosis can easily be missed and without identifying the exact etiology, the disease is usually treated as atypical pneumonia. We diagnosed psittacosis in a mother and her son with Friedreich ataxia, who took care of two parrots in their house. In addition to pneumonia, central nervous system and liver involvement were al

[Fatal cryptococcosis in a bird fancier. A clinical case report on pathology, diagnosis and epidemiology of cryptococcosis].

In a 69 year-old female patient who had been a pet bird enthusiast, cryptococcosis of the central nervous system was surprisingly established as cause of death at postmortem. Clinically, a diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver associated with atypical coma hepaticum had been suspected. Apart from damage due to alcohol abuse, no other underlying disease could be found. The fecal matter of a budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) has been suggested as the probable source of infection. Using Guizotia abyssinica creatinine agar, Cryptococcus neoformans could be isolated from dry fecal matter collected

Compendium of measures to control Chlamydia psittaci infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds (avian chlamydiosis), 1998. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Psittacosis -- also known as parrot disease, parrot fever, and ornithosiscan cause severe pneumonia and other serious health problems among humans. Approximately 800 cases of psittacosis (infection with Chlamydia psittaci) were reported to CDC from 1987 through 1996, and most resulted from exposure to pet birds, usually parrots, macaws, cockatiels, and parakeets. In birds, C. psittaci infection is referred to as avian chlamydiosis (AC). Infected birds shed the bacteria through feces and nasal discharges, which can remain infectious for several months. Blood sampling from the venous occipital sinus of birds.

Venous occipital sinus blood sampling was demonstrated to be an effective nonlethal method in all species tested including ducks, geese, Chukar partridge, Japanese quail, pea-fowl, pheasants, parakeets, turkeys, and chickens. Maximum blood volume obtained from the occipital sinus of 1-day-old chicks equalled the volume obtained by cardiac puncture and exceeded the volume collected by decapitation. Venous occipital sinus puncture was successfully used to rapidly collect several successive blood samples from individual birds, thus indicating the method's utility for serial blood sampling. Interactions between viscerotropic velogenic Newcastle diseases virus and pet birds of six species. I. Clinical and serologic responses, and viral excretion.

Clinical and serologic responses to a psittacine isolate of viscerotropic velogenic Newcastle disease virus (VVNDV) were evaluated in pet birds of six species: budgerigar, yellow-headed Amazon parrot, halfmoon conure, lesser hill mynah, black-headed nun, canary. The clinical response was most marked in the budgerigars, parrots, and conures, and only minimal in the nuns. Between post-exposure days (PED) 3 and 5 some birds developed ruffled plumage, conjunctivitis, and central nervous system dysfunction: ataxia, wing tremors, paralysis of the extremities, and tremors of the head accompanied by n

Gestational psittacosis: A case report and literature review.

Gestational psittacosis is a rare disease that is associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Currently, there is no examination method which allows for a quick diagnosis. We report a case of gestational psittacosis that could not be diagnosed as psittacosis during treatment and resulted in maternal and fetal death despite intensive treatment. We also reviewed 23 cases of gestational psittacosis. Fetal and maternal mortality was 82.6% (19/23) and 8.7% (2/23), respectively. In pregnant women with high fever and flu-like symptoms, we should suspect Chlamydia psittaci

An unusual presentation of a case of human psittacosis.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci is a gram-negative, obligate intracellular organism. Birds are the main reservoir, but also non-avian domestic animals and humans can be infected. In humans it mostly causes respiratory infections due to occupational exposure with varying severity. Sensitive and specific diagnostic tests are needed to define psittacosis in humans as these tests also allow rapid tracing of the animal source. However, diagnosis in humans is often based on time-consuming culture techniques and antibody detection assays as in many countries, the existing molecular diagnostic tests fo

Prevalence and Genotyping of Cryptosporidium Infection in Pet Parrots in North China.

Cryptosporidiosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Cryptosporidium spp., sometimes leading to severe diarrhea in humans and animals. In the present study, 311 parrots, belonging to four species, namely, Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), Lovebirds (Agapornis sp.), Alexandrine parakeets (Psittacula eupatria), and Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), from Beijing and Weifang cities, were examined for Cryptosporidium spp. infection. Blood samples of each bird were examined using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and fecal samples were examined by Sheather's sugar flotation technique. P

[Bird-related chronic hypersensitivity pneuminitis demonstrating the fluctuation of disease activity accompanied with environmental changes].

We report a case of bird-related chronic hypersensitivity pneuminitis exhibiting the fluctuation of serum markers for interstitial lung disease along with the changes in life environment. A 65-year-old man had had an abnormal chest radiograph for 2 years and had complained of a non-productive cough. He had had 30 parakeets 20 years previously and had used feather products for 15 years. In autumn and early winter wild birds had visited persimmons trees in the neighboring garden. Antibodies to bird-related antigens in the broncho-alveolar lavage fluids and sera were positive and the thoracoscopi

A comparative study of annual changes in the pineal gland morphology with reference to the influence of melatonin on testicular activity in tropical birds, Psittacula cyanocephala and Ploceus philippinus.

The aim of the present comparative investigation was to examine annual pineal cytological changes and the action of melatonin in relation to testicular activity in two wild tropical avian species. The findings revealed that in both blossomheaded parakeets (Psittacula cyanocephala) and Indian weaver birds (Ploceus philippinus) the pineal gland was inactive, with reduced karyometric values during the breeding season. A pinealoactive phase showing significantly increased pinealocyte nuclear diameter corresponded with the nonbreeding phase. Administration of melatonin (250 micrograms/100 g body wt
