Granular parakeratosis induced by benzalkonium chloride exposure from laundry rinse aids.

Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium cationic detergent present in a number of household products, which can act as a major skin irritant. We present the case of six children who developed granular parakeratosis after exposure to benzalkonium chloride in laundry rinse aids, presenting as a brightly erythematous, tender but minimally pruritic, intertriginous eruption followed by superficial desquamation. The eruptions resolved over 3-4 weeks after cessation of exposure.

[Spontaneous remission of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (lymphadenopathy) with focal skin parakeratosis].

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is subacute, necrotizing lymphadenopathy affecting mainly young women, and manifested by cervical lymphadenopathy. It is often observed, and described in Asia, but in other world regions sporadically too. Etiology is unknown, but it has been postulated that this condition is induced by infectious factor. We described a case of 20-year-old Caucasian woman with diagnosis of Kikuchi-Fujimoto lymphadenopathy. First symptoms as a cervical lymph nodes enlargement 2 cm in diameter was associated with elevated body temperature, without associated symptoms of infection appeared

Eczema-like Granular Parakeratosis Exhibits Inflammatory Keratinocyte Remodeling and Aberrant Epidermal Differentiation.

Granular parakeratosis (GP) is an uncommon keratinization disorder that predominantly affects intertriginous areas and may clinically mimic atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Histologically, GP is characterized by compact hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, and retention of keratohyalin granules within the stratum corneum, although its histopathological spectrum is heterogeneous. Previous studies have consisted mainly of case reports, while mechanistic investigations remain limited, and whether GP represents a purely cornification-related abnormality is unclear. During and after the coronavirus diseas

Granular parakeratosis secondary to benzalkonium chloride exposure from common household laundry rinse aids.

AIM: Granular parakeratosis (GP) is a benign dermatosis characterised by a rash at intertriginous sites. The pathogenesis is uncertain although it is proposed to be an irritant contact reaction with cases related to benzalkonium chloride (BAC) reported. Our experience is that patients often have delayed diagnosis. This study aims to review the clinical presentation and histopathological features of GP. METHODS: This study is a retrospective case series of adult and paediatric patients seen at dermatology clinics in Auckland, New Zealand. Information was collected on patient demographics, pres

DUSP6 Regulates Skin Inflammation, Parakeratosis and Disease Severity in a Murine Model of Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterised by keratinocyte hyperproliferation and immune cell infiltration driven by cytokines such as IL-17A. The dual-specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6) is a negative regulator of MAPK signalling and was previously reported to be a key mediator of arthritis severity. Here, we examine the role of DUSP6 in a mouse model of psoriasis. Psoriasis was studied in the imiquimod-induced model (IMQ). The skin of DUSP6+/+ and DUSP6-/- mice was treated with IMQ cream. Disease severity was assessed using well-established clinical and histologic systems.

Granular Parakeratosis in an HIV-Infected Patient Exposed to Benzalkonium Chloride: A Case Report.

Granular parakeratosis (GP) is a rare dermatosis characterized by intertriginous erythematosquamous lesions and parchment-like desquamation, often linked to benzalkonium chloride exposure. We report a 32-year-old male with well-controlled HIV who developed pruritic plaques in the groin and thighs, progressing to pustules and erosions. Diagnosis was confirmed histologically as GP with concurrent Candida albicans infection. The cutaneous lesions resolved completely following an 8-day course of intravenous compound glycyrrhizin (60 mL once daily) combined with cessation of benzalkonium chloride e

Ratio of immature cornified envelopes does not correlate with parakeratosis in inflammatory skin disorders.

We have previously established a non-invasive method to evaluate the maturity of cornified envelopes (CEs), and have reported the appearance of immature CEs in the stratum corneum (SC) with poor barrier function, such as the SC of the face. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate CEs in inflammatory skin disorders, and to clarify the relationship between the appearance of the immature CEs and parakeratosis, which is often used as a marker for defective keratinization in inflammatory skin disorders. Cornified envelopes in the outermost SC of involved areas of psoriasis vulgaris (PV) an

[Definition of the terms "parakeratosis" and "dyskeratosis" from gynecocytological point of view (author's transl)].

In dermatopathology, parakeratosis and dyskeratosis have always been regarded as exactly defined terms. However, in keratinizing lesions of the portio and vagina, and especially of the vulva, atypical changes have repeatedly been described both within the unkeratinized squamous epithelium and within the stratum corneum. These observations were confirmed by a combined cyto-histological study of the vulva in 464 women. A graduation of cellular atypias was possible. The question therefore occurs as to whether the usual terms para- and dyskeratosis should be supplied with certain additional denota

Persistent Esophageal Parakeratosis With Recurrent Candida Esophagitis in a Virally Suppressed Person With HIV.

Esophageal parakeratosis is an uncommon histopathologic finding that can closely mimic malignancy endoscopically and has been linked to micronutrient deficiency states and chronic reflux. We report a 57-year-old man with well-controlled HIV (stable viral suppression and robust CD4 count) who developed progressive dysphagia with malignant-appearing esophageal plaques over a long segment of the mid-to-distal esophagus. Serial biopsies repeatedly showed parakeratosis/hyperkeratosis without dysplasia or malignancy, with intermittent Candida on histology. Despite the alarming appearance, cross-sect

The transformation of pityriasis lichenoides chronica into parakeratosis variegata in an 11-year-old girl.

Parakeratosis variegata is a rare disorder with unknown aetiology. In a few cases it arises from benign skin diseases such as pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (Mucha Habermann disease) or pityriasis lichenoides chronica. However, transformation into malignant diseases such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma has been observed. We report an 11-year-old girl with a 10-year history of pityriasis lichenoides chronica now presenting with parakeratosis variegata. Analysis of skin infiltrating T cells showed clonally rearranged T-cell receptor gamma chains occurring with a frequency of more tha

Granular parakeratosis associated with the use of laundry sanitizers containing benzalkonium chloride: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Granular parakeratosis (GP) is a rare benign inflammatory dermatosis that preferentially involves the axillae and other intertriginous, friction-prone skin sites and typically presents with pruritic erythema and scaling. Cases associated with benzalkonium chloride (BAC) exposure have rarely been systematically summarized, and further clinical evidence is needed. Herein, we report a case of generalized GP potentially associated with long-term exposure to a BAC-containing laundry sanitizer, with the aim of expanding the clinical spectrum of cutaneous adverse reactions associated with

[Ultrastructure of parapsoriasis lesions. Parapsoriasis en plaques and parakeratosis variegata as prelymphoma; differences from pityriasis lichenoides].

The morphological alterations of involved skin in three different types of parapsoriasis were investigated in 9 patients by electron microscopy. Pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) is characterized by a lymphohistiocytic dermal infiltrate and by epidermotropic histiocytic cells, which penetrate up to the horny layer. In parapsoriasis en plaques (PeP) and in parakeratosis variegata (PV) the dermal infiltrate is mainly composed of lymphocytoid cells, some of which, particularly in PV, reveal the features of Sézary-Cells (11% and 30% respectively). The epidermis is predominantly invaded by part
