PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Paraneoplastic diseases of the retina are rare. Diagnosis can be challenging, and studies on management strategies are limited. The purpose of this review is to summarize our current understanding of the presentation, diagnosis, and management for cancer associated retinopathy, melanoma associated retinopathy, paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy, and bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation.

We treated a 56-year-old man who had acanthosis nigricans associated with gastric adenocarcinoma and involving the axillae, hands, feet, anus, soft palate, and eyes. The patient developed epiphora from occlusion of the canaliculi with papillomatous lesions. Recognition of the ocular signs of this paraneoplastic syndrome may indicate to the ophthalmologist that the patient should have a thorough oncologic examination.

Four cases of opsoclonus in adults are reported. In all cases, it was associated with myoclonus and cerebellar syndrome. In 2 cases, the clinical and biological picture was suggestive of an infectious origin, and the patients recovered. The last cases are paraneoplastic opsoclonus revelating a pulmonary carcinoma and a breast cancer. The two patients died from metastasis after a transient improvement of ocular disorder. The pathophysiology of opsoclonus is discussed.

A 55-year-old healthy man presented with redness and pain in both eyes and was diagnosed with bilateral scleritis. A year later impairment of ocular movement and cervical adenopathy appeared.
