Depression in paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic patients compared with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression occurring in schizophrenia is a common problem; however, investigators have typically not studied it with the paranoid/nonparanoid dichotomy in mind. This study examines the quality as well as the severity of depression in three psychiatric groups: paranoid schizophrenia patients, nonparanoid schizophrenia patients, and nonpsychotic major depression patients. METHOD: Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected on 27 paranoid and 27 nonparanoid schizophrenia patients during their postpsychotic phase while they were at least mildly depressed, and a comparison group

Aberrant Gray Matter Volume and Cortical Surface in Paranoid-Type Delusional Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Delusions are core symptoms of schizophrenia-spectrum and related disorders. Despite their clinical relevance, the neural correlates underlying such phenomena are unclear. Recent research suggests that specific delusional content may be associated with distinct neural substrates. OBJECTIVE: Here, we used structural magnetic resonance imaging to investigate multiple parameters of brain morphology in patients presenting with paranoid type delusional disorder (pt-DD, n = 14) compared to those of healthy controls (HC, n = 25). METHODS: Voxel- and surface-based morphometry for struc

Genetic associations between delusional disorder and paranoid schizophrenia: A novel etiologic approach.

OBJECTIVES: Genetic associations between delusional disorder and paranoid schizophrenia are not well understood, although involvement of biological factors has been suspected. We investigated the incidence of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I alleles in patients with delusional disorder and paranoid schizophrenia, first, to explore a possible immunogenetic etiology of these paranoid disorders and, second, to determine whether they share similar etiologic mechanisms. METHOD: We employed a nested case-control study design. Psychiatric reference data were available for 38,500 patients attend

[The comparison of self-concept and self-acceptance in patients with paranoid schizophrenia and neurotic disorder].

Self-acceptance as a correlation between real and ideal self-concept distinguishes neurotic patients from paranoid schizophrenic patients. This fact may support the hypothesis that these groups of patients are characteristic of different personality traits.

Demography of paranoid psychosis (delusional disorder): a review and comparison with schizophrenia and affective illness.

This article reviews the demographic characteristics of paranoid psychosis or delusional disorder (DD) and compares them with those found for schizophrenia and affective illness. Delusional disorder constitutes between 1% and 4% of all psychiatric admissions, with an incidence of first admissions between 1 and 3/100,000 population per year. Like affective illness, but unlike schizophrenia, DD is predominantly an illness of middle to late adult life, usually occurring in persons who have been married. Like schizophrenia, but unlike affective illness, DD occurs more frequently in low socioeconom

Paranoid delusional disorder follows social anxiety disorder in a long-term case series: evolutionary perspective.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients may have self-referential ideas and share other cognitive processes with paranoid delusional disorder (PDD) patients. From an evolutionary perspective, SAD may derive from biologically instinctive social hierarchy ranking, thus causing an assumption of inferior social rank, and thus prompting concerns about mistreatment from those of perceived higher rank. This naturalistic longitudinal study followed four patients with initial SAD and later onset of PDD. These four patients show the same sequence of diagnosed SAD followed by diagnosed PDD, as is often re

The murder of the surgeon Antonio Parrozzani and the relationship between sexual disorders and paranoid thinking.

In this study we aimed to describe the relationship between sexual disorders and paranoid thinking describing the historical case of murder of the famous surgeon Antonio Parrozzani and the pathological personality of his murderer. Parrozzani was killed by Francesco Mancini, his patient in the past. Mancini was obsessed by his sexual problems due to hypothetical injuries after an inguinal hernia surgery, made by Parrozzani. Following treatment, the murderer likely lived his surgery as a traumatic event and developed a paranoid thinking against the surgeon, breaking out with the dramatic homicid

A Case Report of Leukocytosis During Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy of Paranoid Personality Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) is a viable therapeutic option for patients with mood disorders and schizophrenia. We found that there is a relationship between MECT and leukocytosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of this problem. There are no relevant guidelines recommending the risk of leukocytosis caused by MECT, nor the method to reduce the risk. We hope to share this case to provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of similar patients with leukocytosis during or after MECT and remind psychiatrists to pay attention to this risk of

Gene expression study of mitochondrial complex I in schizophrenia and paranoid personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The aetiology and molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia (SCZ) and paranoid personality disorder (PPD) are not yet clarified. The present study aimed to assess the role of mitochondrial complex I and cell bioenergetic pathways in the aetiology and characteristics of SCZ and PPD. METHODS: mRNA levels of all genomic and mitochondrial genes which encode mitochondrial complex I subunits (44 genes) were assessed in blood in 634 SCZ, 340 PPD patients and 528 non-psychiatric subjects using quantitative real-time PCR, and associated comprehensive psychiatric, neurological and biochemical a

Folie à famille: shared paranoid disorder in a Vietnam veteran and his family.

Reports of folie à famille are rare; this may be the first reported case involving a Vietnam veteran. Expression of his paranoid schizophrenia involved delusions and hallucinations relating to Vietnam, and his wife and children shared his paranoia. Typical of folie à famille were the dominant family member, the threat of violence, and the family's social isolation, frequent crises, and stable membership. Although the veteran's intrusive recollections of his Vietnam experience were typical of posttraumatic stress disorder, he acted on rather than avoided them. Treatment focused on the entire fa

Ulcerative colitis in association with chronic paranoid schizophrenia: a review of steroid-induced psychiatric disorders.

A 21-year-old schizophrenic man developed ulcerative colitis. Because he might have needed steroids, we reviewed the literature on the use of steroids in patients with psychiatric disorders. The pathogenesis of psychiatric symptoms during steroid therapy is unknown. Development of psychiatric complications in patients receiving steroids is probably dose-dependent. The type of psychiatric manifestations is variable, ranging from affective through schizophreniform syndromes. It is unclear whether a history of psychiatric disorders increases the risk for psychiatric problems from steroids. In the

Connectome-based predictive modeling predicts paranoid ideation in young men with paranoid personality disorder: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Paranoid personality disorder (PPD), a mental disorder that affects interpersonal relationships and work, is frequently neglected during diagnosis and evaluation at the individual-level. This preliminary study aimed to investigate whether connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) can predict paranoia scores of young men with PPD using whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC). College students with paranoid tendencies were screened using paranoia scores ≥60 derived from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory; 18 participants were ultimately diagnosed with PPD accordin

Attributional style in fist episode of schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders with and without paranoid ideation.

In the present study we evaluated attributional style which refers to how individuals explain the causes for positive and negative events in their lives in patients with first episode of schizophrenia with and without paranoid ideation. 43 patients with first episode of psychosis and 37 matched normal controls completed Ambiguous Intentions Hostility Questionnaire (AIHQ) (Combs et al. 2007). Between group comparison of AIHQ scores showed a notable tendency to show aggressive response in overall patients group. We obtained significant elevation of hostility and blame biases scores in intentiona

Paranoid personality disorder in the United States: the role of race, illicit drug use, and income.

Differential rates of schizophrenia and paranoia symptoms have been found for Black and White individuals. Paranoid personality disorder shares symptoms with schizophrenia, yet has received minimal attention with regard to potential racial differences. In a sample consisting of 180 substance use disorder treatment-seeking individuals, the association between the diagnosis of paranoid personality disorder and the variables of race, cannabis use disorder, and income were examined. Results extended previous findings to paranoid personality disorder, supporting the hypothesis that Black individual

Lipid peroxidation (LPO) processes and the status of the ++bio-antioxidant defence system were studied in 133 male patients with continuous paranoid schizophrenia associated with hallucinatory and paranoid symptomatology, refractory to treatment. According to the ++clinico-pathogenetic principle, 3 groups of resistant patients were made up: an "endogenous" one (because of high progression), a "pharmacogenous" one (secondary, formed in accordance with the mechanisms of "adaptation" to neuroleptics, and a "resistant" one formed on the "pathological ground".
