Experiencing poverty and associated risk factors can be detrimental to families' mental health and well-being. However, it is unclear whether experiencing specific types or patterns of adversity leads to distinct outcomes. Guided by the Family Stress Model, the objective of this study was to (a) identify unique family risk classes based on exposure to various combinations of poverty-related adversity and (b) examine whether the family risk classes differed in their levels of parental coping strategies, couple relationship quality, parenting practices, and child behavior problems. The sample in

Background: Child-to-parent violence (CPV) has received increasing attention because of the growing response from parents. This study examined the rates of various CPV types and the reasons underlying why adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) engage in CPV and examined the associations of multidimensional factors with CPV in adolescents with ADHD. Method: In total, 247 adolescents with ADHD and their parents participated in the study. The types (including psychological aggression, physical aggression, financial demand, and control or domination) and instrumental and

BACKGROUND: Parenting styles and attitudes are a relevant factor of a child's developmental environment. When parents raise both a child with an intellectual disability and a typically developing (TD) sibling, their approaches may differ due to factors related to the child, family, and social context. This study explored whether parenting styles and attitudes are consistent across children and examined whether sociodemographic and child-related factors explain variations in parenting behaviors.
METHOD: Ninety-five parents with one child diagnosed with intellectual disability (according to DSM

AIM: To evaluate the perspectives of parents and children on the impact of early childhood caries (ECC) on the oral health-related quality of life (OHQoF).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 400 children aged 3-5 years were recruited for the study. About 200 children who were caries-free were the controls for the study. The remaining 200 consisted of children who were diagnosed with ECC and required dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia. Oral health-related quality of life was recorded at baseline and 6 months after intervention using the Michigan oral health-related quality of life scale.

This study examined whether parents with varying degrees of child physical abuse (CPA) risk differed in pain tolerance, pain sensitivity, and accessibility of aggression-related schemata. Participants included 91 (51 low CPA risk and 40 high CPA risk) general population parents. Participants were randomly assigned to complete either an easy or a difficult anagram task. Pain tolerance and pain sensitivity were assessed using a cold pressor task. Accessibility of aggression-related schemata was assessed at the outset of the data collection session and at the end of the session using a word compl

Boys and girls establish relatively stable gender stereotyped behavior patterns by middle childhood. Parent-report questionnaires measuring children's gender-related behavior enable researchers to conduct large-scale screenings of community samples of children. For school-aged children, two parent-report instruments, the Child Game Participation Questionnaire (CGPQ) and the Child Behavior and Attitude Questionnaire (CBAQ), have long been used for measuring children's sex-dimorphic behaviors in Western societies, but few studies have been conducted using these measures for Chinese populations.

BACKGROUND: Children of parents with mental illness (at-risk) face an increased risk for developing mental health issues themselves than children of healthy parents (controls), yet the neurobiological underpinnings remain unclear. This study explored differences in white matter (WM) between at-risk children and controls, focusing on brain pathways related to emotion regulation and the associations between parenting behaviours, stress, and WM microstructural properties.
METHODS: WM properties were assessed via diffusion-weighted imaging in 64 children (28 at-risk, 36 control) across five emoti

This cross sectional investigation measured the agreement between parent report of their 8-14 year old child's sport-related concussion (SRC) history and their child's self-report of their own SRC history. Parent-child dyads (n = 405) within a youth contact sports (e.g., football, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer) setting participated in the study. Parents (6.2%) and 8.6% of children self-reported a history of at least one diagnosed SRC. We observed substantial agreement between the number of parent-reported and child self-reported SRCs (κ = 0.613, p ≤ .001). Partial agreement regarding the number

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important outcome among children with Hirschsprung Disease (HD), but there are challenges in interpreting findings in previous studies owing to the choice of a comparator group and informant. We compared parent-proxy versus child self-report HRQOL in children with HD to children with functional constipation (FC) and examined predictors of HRQOL.
METHODS: Data of 126 children (5-18 years, 60.3% male, HD: n = 52, FC: n = 74) were acquired from the Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium. Demographics, clinical variables, HRQOL

The present study examined mediators and moderators of the relation between parental ADHD symptomatology and the development of child attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms across the preschool years. Participants included 258 (138 boys) 3-year-old children (M = 44.13 months, SD = 3.39) with and without behavior problems and their parents who took part in a 3-year longitudinal study. Maternal ADHD symptoms predicted later ADHD symptoms in children, controlling for early child symptomatology. Both family history of ADHD and paternal como

PURPOSE: Respiratory symptoms account for the majority of drug prescriptions in the first year of life. We investigated the influence of child, parent and physician factors on drug prescriptions for respiratory symptoms in primary care in infancy.
METHODS: Infants participated in the WHeezing Illnesses STudy LEidsche Rijn (WHISTLER), a prospective birth cohort on respiratory illnesses. Outcome was defined as having received a prescription of antibiotics or of anti-asthma medication for respiratory symptoms by a physician.
RESULTS: Nearly 60% of all children ever visited a physician for respi

While extant research has well established multiple familial risk factors for child social anxiety, scarce research has examined how parental child-oriented perfectionism may contribute to children’s social anxiety. This study tracked 2228 Chinese adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.95 ± 0.79 years, 46.3% girls) with five measurements over three years. Using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM), results indicated that harsh fathering can predict subsequent fathers’ and mothers’ child-oriented perfectionism, but fathers’ and mothers’ child-oriented perfectionism fail to predict s

BACKGROUND: Nomophobia, commonly understood as fear or distress associated with being without access to a mobile phone, has become a relevant topic in adolescent research. However, little is known about how nomophobiarelated indicators are associated with one another in adolescents involved in juvenile justice interventions for child-toparent violence (CPV).
METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional study included 53 adolescents serving court-ordered measures for CPV in a specialized juvenile justice centre in Madrid, Spain. Six items from the nomophobia subscale of the Risk Scale for Adolesc

The aim of this study was to contribute to the research of child physical abuse (CPA) by examining if there were any differences in high school students' mental health (in this study symptoms of depression and anxiety, self-esteem and sense of coherence) and/or, in how they perceive their parents, depending on whether or not they had been subjected to CPA during childhood. In addition, if high school students reported different mental health and/or, relationships with their parents, depending on if their mother, father or both parents were the perpetrators of CPA. Caregiving relationships are significant factors in the development, mediation, or moderation of childhood mental health problems. However, epidemiological and clinical research has been limited by lack of reliable, succinct, and standardized methods of assessing parent-child relationship constructs. The Relational Processes Workgroup (ad hoc to the DSM-5 process) proposed more specific criteria to define a parent-child relational problem (PCRP). These criteria were field tested in one of the DSM-5 Field trial sites, utilizing a similar research design as DSM-5. Participants included 133 sympt

BACKGROUND: Raising an autistic child is associated with increased parenting stress relative to raising typically developing children. Increased parenting stress is associated with lower parent wellbeing, which in turn can negatively impact child wellbeing.
AIMS: The current study sought to quantify parenting stress and parent health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the autism context, and further understand the relationship between them by employing a relatively novel statistical method, Network Analysis.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This cross-sectional study involved 476 parents of an autist

BACKGROUND: Children with a raised BMI are a major public health challenge in the world that can cause serious consequences for children's physical and mental health. Child health care nurses' responsibility is to promote health and prevent ill-health in children, but because being overweight is stigmatized CHC-nurses find it difficult to talk to the parents about concerns over the children's weight, in fear of losing their trust.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to describe parents' experiences of when CHC-nurses introduce a conversation related to their child being overweight.

Parent-child informant discrepancies on psychopathology provide important knowledge on the parent-child relationship and the child's mental health, but mechanisms underlying parent-child informant discrepancies are largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between attachment problems and mentalizing capacity and parent-child informant discrepancies on borderline personality disorder (BPD) severity, internalizing, and externalizing pathology in a clinical sample of 91 adolescent girls with BPD and their parents. Results showed that more attachment problems to parents and peer

Research on the longitudinal courses of child social-emotional symptoms and sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic within societies would be of key value for promoting child well-being in global crises. We characterized the course of children's social-emotional and sleep symptoms before and throughout the pandemic in a Finnish longitudinal cohort of 1825 5- to 9-year-old children (46% girls) with four follow-up points during the pandemic from up to 695 participants (spring 2020-summer 2021). Second, we examined the role of parental distress and COVID-related stressful events in child symptoms. Chi

BACKGROUND: CLN3 disease is a neurodegenerative condition presenting in the first decade of life typically leading to death in the third decade. The earliest symptom is rapidly progressive visual impairment followed by intellectual and motor impairments, epilepsy and behavioural disturbances. There are limited data on how the condition affects the family system or the role of family resilience in paediatric neurodegenerative diseases.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight parents (five mothers and three fathers) of five children with CLN3. Interview questions focused o
