Sibling Relationships After the Death of a Parent During Childhood: "Everyone Carries Their Own Grief".

After the death of a parent, children have to adjust to changes in family roles and dynamics as a result of the loss, including the sibling relationship. The current qualitative study explored, using joint interviews with sibling pairs, how adult siblings experienced the death of their parent during childhood and their sibling relationship over time. Thirteen adult siblings from six families reflected upon their loss experiences and how these affected their sibling relationship. Most sibling pairs described a distance directly after parental death, and an alternating pattern of distance and cl

Parents' descriptions of labouring with an antepartum fetal death: Findings from the Birthing in Grief study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence to guide intrapartum care when an unborn baby has died is limited. AIMS: To explore parents' experiences of care during labour of an antepartum stillbirth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 18 bereaved parents from across Australia. Content analysis was conducted. FINDINGS: Two broad themes were identified: 'explaining every step' and 'helping us feel like parents.' Sub-themes under the first broad theme, 'explaining every step', were 'how and when information was given' and 'what happens next.' 'Like any other parent', 'feeling the pain' and 'every

"Your heart keeps bleeding": lived experiences of parents with a perinatal death in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, two million babies are stillborn and 1.8 million babies die before completing seven days of life. Approximately 4% of pregnant women in Uganda experience perinatal death. The response following a perinatal death tends to be socio-culturally constructed. Investigating the unique personal experiences of parents from a low-income setting with unique cultural beliefs and practices is crucial for the design and implementation of appropriate interventions. OBJECTIVE: To describe the lived experiences of parents following perinatal death in Lira district, Northern Uganda. MET

Post-Traumatic Growth in Parents following Their Child's Death in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Background: Although bereaved parents suffer greatly, some may experience positive change referred to as post-traumatic growth. Objective: Explore the extent to which parents perceive post-traumatic growth after their child's death in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and associated factors. Design: Longitudinal parent survey conducted 6 and 13 months after a child's death. Surveys included the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Short Form (PTGI-SF), a 10-item measure with range of 0-50 where higher scores indicate more post-traumatic growth. Surveys also included the Inventory of Complicat

Parent and Metabolite Opioid Drug Concentrations in Unintentional Deaths Involving Opioid and Benzodiazepine Combinations.

Effects of benzodiazepines on postmortem opioid parent and parent/metabolite blood concentration ratios were determined for fentanyl-, hydrocodone-, methadone-, or oxycodone-related accidental deaths. These opioids are partially metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme system, which is also affected by diazepam and alprazolam. Opioid/metabolite combinations examined were as follows: fentanyl/norfentanyl, hydrocodone/dihydrocodeine, methadone/EDDP, and oxycodone/oxymorphone. Parent opioid concentrations were analyzed for 877 deaths. Parent/metabolite concentration ratios were analyzed for 349 deaths, e

Parent health and functioning 13 months after infant or child NICU/PICU death.

BACKGROUND: After a child's death, parents may experience depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and increased risk for cancers, diabetes, psychiatric hospitalization, and suicide. Racial/ethnic differences are unknown. This longitudinal study investigated health and functioning of Hispanic, black, and white parents through 13 months after NICU/PICU death. METHODS: Parents (176 mothers, 73 fathers) of 188 deceased infants/children were recruited from 4 NICUs, 4 PICUs, and state death certificates 2 to 3 weeks after death. Deaths occurred after limiting treatment/withdrawing life su

Psychological health of young adults who experienced early parent death: MMPI trends.

Psychological effects that result from childhood parent loss by death are of substantial clinical and research importance. Parent loss has been linked with various psychopathology, though little is known of its effects on subsequent psychological health (a) as a function of the child's sex; (b) in normal individuals; (c) where early parent separation also has occurred. This study provides data on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-168 (MMPI-168) that address these issues. Ss were normals (16 males and 16 females per group) divided into three groups: Early bereaved (up to age 7), l

Number of siblings and psychotropic medication purchases surrounding parental death in adulthood: a population-wide cohort study in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Parental death has well-established adverse effects on the mental health of children and adolescents, but evidence on adults is scarce. Also, the role of siblings has not been assessed before, even though siblings might be an important source of support during parental death. METHODS: We conducted a national cohort study to examine psychotropic medication purchases (antidepressants, anxiolytics, hypnotics and sedatives) before and after parental death and assessed differences by sibship size and sex of the offspring. We estimated annual probabilities of psychotropic medication pur

The Association between Therapeutic Alliance and Parental Health Outcomes following a Child's Death in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Therapeutic alliance reflects the strength and quality of the physician-patient/family relationship. We investigated the association between therapeutic alliance and bereaved parents' mental health and perceived overall health following their child's death in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Bereaved parents were surveyed 6 months after their child's death in a PICU affiliated with the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network. Parents were evaluated for complicated grief, depression, and post-traumatic stress using the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG), the Patient Heal

SUDEP Awareness and Effect on Parental Trauma, Grief, and Coping After the Death of a Child: A Qualitative Investigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading cause of seizure-related deaths in people with epilepsy. Despite evidence that SUDEP counseling does not cause stress, improves treatment adherence, and empowers people with epilepsy and their caregivers, it remains underdiscussed. This study aimed to explore the in-depth perspectives of parents who have lost a child to SUDEP, focusing on their experiences, grief, and coping strategies, while factoring in their demographics, the clinical features of their deceased children, and their previous awareness of SUD

Causes of death in individuals exposed to spousal, parental, and child suicide: a nationwide population-based cohort comparison study.

Exposure to suicide is associated with higher mortality, and the health impact varies depending on the types of kinship. However, the moderating role of kinship remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to compare causes of death between individuals exposed to spousal, parental, and child suicide to those exposed to natural or unnatural death. In this study, 1,929,872 individuals were enrolled, of whom 1,726,846 individuals were exposed to natural death, 141,206 individuals were exposed to unnatural death, and 61,820 individuals were exposed to suicide. To compare causes of death between ki

Exploring the fitness hypothesis in ALS: a population-based case-control study of parental cause of death and lifespan.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the theory of premorbid fitness in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), we studied whether a common genetic profile for physical or cardiovascular fitness was manifest in progenitors leading to less cardiovascular death and a longer lifespan in parents of patients with ALS compared with parents of controls. METHODS: Patient and disease characteristics, levels of physical activity, parental cause and age of death were obtained using a structured questionnaire from a population-based, case-control study of ALS in the Netherlands. Logistic regression was used for the an

Affect regulation among bereaved parents following perinatal death: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal death has profound psychological and physical consequences. Understanding how bereaved parents regulate negative affect may help explain variability in adjustment and inform interventions. However, two important gaps remain. First, existing reviews in the field include very limited evidence on parents following perinatal death. Second, these reviews have focused primarily on emotion regulation processes, although emotion regulation is only one way to regulate affective experiences. AIMS: This review synthesises quantitative evidence on affect regulation (AR) following pe

Exploring the Association of Time-After-Death on Psychological Distress in Parents Who Lost a Child to Cancer.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 101 bereaved parents in Switzerland to determine the association between time-after-death and psychological distress. Eligible deceased children were identified via the national registry and forwarded to former treating pediatric oncology centers, which then contacted the parents. Psychological distress was measured using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18). Time-after-death ranged from 2 to 24 years (mean = 11.3, SD = 5.6). Linear regression and spline models showed no significant association between time-after-death and psychological distress. Our fi

Providing Lactation Care Following Stillbirth, Neonatal and Infant Death: Learning from Bereaved Parents.

Objective: The study aimed to identify how, from the perspective of bereaved parents, hospital-based health professionals can better meet their lactation care needs. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 mothers and 7 fathers bereaved by stillbirth, neonatal death, or older infant death. Participants were recruited from three large hospitals in Eastern Australia including two with human milk banks. Qualitative thematic data analysis identified bereaved parents' lactation experiences, needs, and how parents wanted lactation care to be provided. Results: Participants experienced la

How Do Drug-Death-Bereaved Parents Adjust to Life Without the Deceased? A Qualitative Study.

Knowledge about how bereaved persons grieve can enhance quality in providing the support and potential services that they need. We aimed to identify ways in which drug-death-bereaved Norwegian parents go on with their lives and what inhibits or promotes adaptation during their grieving. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze 14 semistructured in-depth interviews. We generated three themes: (I) processing grief emotions, (II) proactive coping, and (III) giving and receiving support and assistance. Processing guilt rumination, reflections on blame and a burden of grief emotions characte

Tuberous sclerosis complex: neonatal deaths in three of four children of consanguineous, non-expressing parents.

We describe here four sibs, born to consanguineous, healthy, asymptomatic parents. Three of these infants had a rapidly fatal course in the neonatal period; death was attributed to congestive heart failure with radiographic evidence of cardiomegaly in all of them. Necropsy was done in only one of them and showed the typical findings of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in the central nervous system (CNS), kidneys, heart, and liver. The fourth sib, currently 2 years old, also has typical signs of TSC, namely hypomelanotic skin macules and calcified subependymal nodules. Both parents and a living
