Women's postpartum maternity benefits and work experience.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to describe women's perceptions of their maternity leave policy and its implementation, maternity leave benefits, postpartum work experience, and factors that relate to returning to work. METHODS: Surveys were mailed to 436 married, recently employed, first-time mothers at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months postpartum. RESULTS: Most respondents said they had written maternity leave policies they could understand, but they were not completely satisfied with their policies. The average 11.1-week maternity leave was considerably shorter than their 8-month ideal, and o

Gender, Marital, and Parental Barriers to Pursuing Gastroenterology Fellowship: A Multicenter Analysis of a National Survey and Actionable Solutions.

INTRODUCTION: Female gastroenterologists comprise 19% of the gastroenterology (GI) workforce, despite females making up 30% of GI fellows and over 50% of medical students in the USA. Barriers to pursuing GI fellowship have not been studied at the resident level. We aimed to determine multiple barriers that may prevent internal medicine (IM) residents from pursuing GI fellowship. METHODS: Our multi-center team distributed an IRB-approved electronic survey to residents in IM residency programs nationwide. Multiple rounds of emails with survey description and link were sent to program directors

Family planning influences and perceptions among dermatology residents from ACGME-accredited training programs: a survey-based study.

As an increasing number of women pursue careers in dermatology, the structure and culture of training must reflect the evolving needs of dermatology residents. To examine perceived barriers to and perceptions of family planning amongst dermatology residents capable of becoming pregnant, evidence-based principles were employed to develop a 40-question survey for dermatology residents in ACGME-accredited training programs. A pilot study was conducted with the Harvard Combined Dermatology Residency Training Program residents before full-scale national electronic survey distribution from April to

Paternity leave, supportive involvement, and maternal postpartum adjustment: parity-stratified associations in a structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: How paternity leave relates to postpartum adjustment remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations of paternity leave group [no leave, short (<1 month), or long (≥1 month)] with mothers' parenting adaptation and depressive symptoms at 3 months postpartum in a theory-guided SEM including mothers' reports of fathers' childcare and housework involvement and perceived coparenting quality. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey included 555 mothers (primipara, n = 330; multipara, n = 225). Participants completed questionnaires assessing fathers' involvement using the Child Care A

American association for women in radiology (AAWR): Official statement regarding paid family and medical leave (PFML).

Physician well-being is essential to high-quality patient care, yet the lack of universally available paid family and medical leave (PFML) in the United States undermines this principle. The dynamic interplay between work and personal responsibilities-especially during significant life events such as childbirth, illness, or caregiving-can impact healthcare providers' mental and physical health, ultimately affecting patient outcomes. While the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides unpaid, job-protected leave, it excludes many workers and disproportionately impacts women, minorities, and

[Pre-labor maternity leave for working women in physically demanding occupations].

Pregnant women, when employed in physically demanding occupations, may encounter difficulties in carrying out their work throughout pregnancy. Many such "blue collar" workers are unable to proceed in strenuous work during advanced stages of pregnancy. However, scientific evidence is not sufficient to support the widely accepted assumption of health risks due to the hard work during pregnancy. Therefore, in Israel, as long as pregnancy is normal, and the good health of both the mother and fetus is maintained, such workers are not entitled to sick leave or any other form of compensation. Neverth

Parental Gender Equality and Use of Oral Contraceptives Among Young Women: A Longitudinal, Population-based Study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how parental gender equality early in their children lives can influence daughters' decision to use contraceptive pills. AIM: The study aimed at exploring whether maternal working time and paternity leave in Sweden during the first two years of their daughters' lives is associated with the use of oral contraceptives when they are adolescents or young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population was selected from a cohort of all Swedish fathers and mothers who had their first child together between 1988 and 1989 (n = 57,520 family units). Multivariate

The interplay of poverty risk-employment trajectories in couples around the transition to parenthood in Germany.

The transition to parenthood is a critical period that exacerbates gendered economic inequality, with mothers more likely than their partners to experience employment disruptions and income losses. This study examines individual poverty risk among partnered individuals (N = 1237) in Germany from a life course perspective, analyzing how gendered career patterns around first births between 1992 and 2013 intersect with changes in individual poverty risk, i.e. under the assumption of no income pooling. Applying multichannel sequence analysis (MCSA) to data from the Socio-Economic Panel, the findin

The gap between the need for parental support and support provided during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study with first-time mothers' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Becoming a parent can be challenging. Becoming a parent for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic might pose additional challenges, as the pandemic has imposed restrictions on society, thus affecting parental support. There were changes in parental support from child health services and preschools available for all children and their parents, so called open preschools, have been closed. This study explored first-time parents' experiences of the parental support they received during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A qualitative study involving individual semi-structured inter

Family Planning Experiences and Challenges of Mohs Fellowship Trainees.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature describing family planning challenges faced by Mohs fellows. OBJECTIVE: To characterize perceptions about and experiences with family planning, fertility, lactation, and parental leave and identify ways to support parental health and family planning for Mohs fellows. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A voluntary, anonymous survey was distributed to Mohs surgeons who recently completed fellowship. RESULTS: In total, 116 Mohs surgeons completed the survey. Their mean age was 34.5 years old, and more were female ( n = 81, 69.8%) than male ( n = 35, 30.2%). Mos

The glass ceiling: A biological phenomenon.

Many brilliant and ambitious young women lose their drive for top careers after childbirth. New maternal impulses are at odds with their original ambitions and for many mothers stress and frustration will be the result as they have to combine child care with workweeks of 60-80h to reach or remain at the top. Pregnancy hormones modify the female's brain as has been demonstrated already for decades in animals. This brain plasticity due to adult neurogenesis in the so called maternal circuitry of the limbic system is long-lasting and perhaps lifelong. In humans hormonal and neuro-imaging studies

Parental Social Environment Has no Effect on Offspring Development in the Dung Beetle: A Test of Adult Sex Ratio Effects.

The adult sex ratio (ASR) is a key demographic parameter that shapes sexual selection and social interactions. While ASR variation drives profound behavioral plasticity within a generation, it remains unclear whether parental experience of skewed ASRs influences offspring development via transgenerational plasticity (TGP), and if so, which of the two core nongenetic pathways: pre-zygotic germline-mediated information transfer and post-zygotic parental investment, predominates. To disentangle these mechanistically distinct pathways, we conducted a controlled egg-transplantation experiment in th

Maternal leave policies and vaccination coverage: a global analysis.

Childhood vaccination is a proven and cost-effective way to reduce childhood mortality; however, participation in vaccination programs is not universal even where programs are free or low cost. Studies in diverse countries have reported work conflicts as limiting parents' ability to vaccinate their children. Using policy data for 185 UN member countries, we explore the hypothesis that an increased opportunity for parents to bring children to vaccination sites will translate into higher childhood vaccination rates. To do so, we use OLS regression to examine the relationship between the duration

Differences in morphological and physiological features of citrus seedlings are related to Mg transport from the parent to branch organs.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that magnesium (Mg) remobilization in citrus plants is regulated by Mg supply and contributes to differences in the growth of the parent and branch organs. Citrus seedlings were grown in sand under Mg deficient (0 mmol Mg2+ L-1, -Mg) and Mg sufficient (2 mmol Mg2+ L-1, + Mg) conditions. The effects on biomass, Mg uptake and transport, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, as well as related morphological and physiological parameters were evaluated in different organs. RESULTS: Mg deficiency significantly decreased plant biomass,

Parental well-being when children move out: A panel study on short- and long-term effects.

This article investigates the effect of adult children leaving the parental home on parental well-being. Adult children moving out is an important event in parents' lives. However, it is theoretically unclear whether parental well-being decreases or increases from children moving out. On the one hand, children moving out can relieve parents' burdens and reduce stress exposure affecting well-being positively. On the other hand, it leads to a change in parental roles, with adverse consequences for parental well-being. This study uses long-running panel data (1991-2016) from the German Socio-Econ

Considerations for the Future: Family Planning and Infertility During Psychiatry Training.

During medical school, residency, or fellowship, many trainees struggle to balance their careers with starting a family. Some may feel the optimal time for parenthood is after completion of training, but the effect of increasing age on fertility is a real consideration for female physicians.1 Several studies have explored the impact of pregnancy and parental leave during surgical residency, yet little has been published on these topics during psychiatry training. This is surprising as psychiatry residents often address the challenges of integrating work and parenthood with their patients, yet

The changing career trajectories of new parents in STEM.

The gender imbalance in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields has remained constant for decades and increases the farther up the STEM career pipeline one looks. Why does the underrepresentation of women endure? This study investigated the role of parenthood as a mechanism of gender-differentiated attrition from STEM employment. Using a nationally representative 8-year longitudinal sample of US STEM professionals, we examined the career trajectories of new parents after the birth or adoption of their first child. We found substantial attrition of new mothers: 43% of women lea

You don't leave your baby--mother's experiences after a stillbirth.

When a baby has died during pregnancy, the first encounter between mother and child occurs when the baby is already dead. Despair, emptiness, and grief characterize the encounter, which is also a gradual farewell to the child and the planned future for the family. This study describes mothers' experiences of the farewell of their stillborn baby at discharge from hospital. Twenty-three mothers from different parts of Sweden, who suffered stillbirth, were interviewed. Semi-structured questions were used and the replies were analyzed using content analysis. The mothers describe the separation fro
