Therapeutic parenting--a program for home care.

There is evidence that inadequate parenting in early childhood, combined with socioeconomic risk factors, can contribute to intellectual deficits, character disorders, and antisocial behaviors in children. Early intervention home care services can circumvent these problems.

Parenting provided by adults with mental retardation.

Studies assessing the quality of parenting provided by adults with mental retardation present conflicting conclusions. Some consider the majority to be doing reasonably well, whilst others report frequently unsatisfactory caretaking. There are a number of reasons for such different views. First, inconsistent selection criteria make it hard to compare across studies. In particular, sample composition will be influenced by the recruitment source. For example, if parents have been chosen from voluntary educational programmes a rather different picture is likely to be found than if they have been

Mental Health, Parenting Stress, and Parenting Practices of Parents of Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children During the Pandemic.

The authors investigated parent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and its association with parenting behaviors of parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. An electronic survey was distributed to parents (N = 103). The results showed that they were experiencing elevated anxiety, depression, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. A combined model demonstrated that parental distress was significantly associated with depression and with parental reports of symptoms indicating significantly higher distress. Parental distress was also significantly associated with paren

Mothering versus fathering? Positive parenting versus negative parenting? Their relative importance in predicting adolescent aggressive behavior: A longitudinal comparison.

To understand whose parenting (mothers vs. fathers) and which type of parenting (warmth vs. hostility) is more important in predicting adolescent aggression, this study applied dominance analysis to evaluate the relative importance of four different parenting dimensions (maternal hostility, paternal hostility, maternal warmth, and paternal warmth). Four waves of adolescent-reported longitudinal data from the PROSPER project (N = 626, 52% adolescent girls, 89% White rural, age 12 to 15) were used to investigate longitudinal change in the relative importance of these dimensions over time. Parenting With a Substance Abuse History: The Moderating Role of Parenting Behaviors on Obesity and Internalizing Symptoms in Adolescence.

Although numerous studies have shown that child obesity is associated with internalizing symptoms, relatively few studies have examined the role of parenting behaviors on this relationship. Youth meeting obesity status may be at higher risk of psychosocial maladjustment when exposed to more vulnerable parenting contexts. The current study interviewed mothers with a history of substance abuse to assess whether parenting behaviors moderated the relationship between obesity and internalizing symptoms among adolescents (N = 160; 51% girls; M = 12.76 years). Hierarchical regression analyses identif

The relationship between parental fatigue, parenting self-efficacy and behaviour: implications for supporting parents in the early parenting period.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates that parental fatigue is associated with low warmth and increased hostility in parent-child interactions. One possible pathway by which fatigue may impact on parenting behaviour is via parental self-efficacy (PSE), whereby high fatigue may undermine PSE, which is often associated with suboptimal parenting behaviour. The current study sought to explore a model of the relationships between parental fatigue, parenting warmth and hostility, where PSE mediates these relationships and whether the nature of these relationships differ by social or family context

Effects of Healthy Families New York on the promotion of maternal parenting competencies and the prevention of harsh parenting.

OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the effectiveness of the Healthy Families New York (HFNY) home visiting program in promoting parenting competencies and preventing maladaptive parenting behaviors in mothers at risk for child abuse and neglect. METHODS: The study used microlevel observational assessments of mother-child interactions in the third wave of a randomized controlled trial to evaluate whether mothers who received home visiting services were more likely to exhibit positive parenting and less likely to display negative parenting behaviors than those who did not receive these services. Effectiveness of an internet-based intervention enhancing Finnish parents' parenting satisfaction and parenting self-efficacy during the postpartum period.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum period presents several challenges related to learning infant care tasks, getting to know the infant and fulfilling self-expectations as parents. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of information-technology-based interventions that support parenting during this period. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of an internet-based intervention to support mothers' and fathers' parenting satisfaction and parenting self-efficacy (PSE). DESIGN: A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group and repeated measures. SETTING: Two public maternit

Parenting work and autism trajectories of care.

This study investigates the work and care associated with raising a child with disabilities in the United States. Based on in-depth interviews with parents who have a child with autism, it develops the notion of parenting work and trajectories of care to investigate how parents navigate and coordinate the challenges of getting an autism diagnosis, obtaining educational services, and re-contextualising the possibilities for the future. I argue that parents embody a complex mix of love, hope, and responsibility in parenting work and trajectories of care that expands temporal and social elements

[New parenting education in maternal child nursing].

Taiwan society is today typified by low birth rates amongst Taiwanese and a rising number of children born to immigrant and trans-cultural marriage families. Unhealthy behavior and anxiety on the part of pregnant women increase postpartum depression and complications and negatively affect neonatal heath. Such may further negatively impact upon romantic feelings between the new parents and the nascent parent-child relationship. New parenting education is a proactive and innovative strategy that may be used to improve maternal and child health. Therefore, it is worthy to explore how best to achi

'New parenting', psychotherapy, prenatal and perinatal care.

The health of future generations, both physical and psychological, depends upon good parental and early environment, free particularly from malnutrition, toxins and undue stress. Education about these negative influences is urgent, especially to encourage childbearing women in a healthy diet and lifestyle. The detrimental effects of cigarette smoking in pregnancy have been known since the 1970s, yet in Germany, for example, 60% of all children are conceived, carried, born into a household where at least one adult smokes. Even if the father desists from smoking at home, the nicotine in his body

The determinants of parenting: a process model.

This essay is based on the assumption that a long-neglected topic of socialization, the determinants of individual differences in parental functioning, is illuminated by research on the etiology of child maltreatment. Three domains of determinants are identified (personal psychological resources of parents, characteristics of the child, and contextual sources of stress and support), and a process model of competent parental functioning is offered on the basis of the analysis. The model presumes that parental functioning is multiply determined, that sources of contextual stress and support can

Family Mealtimes in Hispanic Households: Associations of General Parenting Styles and Food Parenting Practices with Adolescent Food Group Intake.

Background/Objectives: Hispanic adolescents experience disproportionately high rates of obesity and diet-related health risks, yet the family and parenting factors that shape their dietary behaviors remain incompletely understood. This study examined associations between parent sociodemographic characteristics and family meal frequency; among general parenting styles, food parenting practices, and family meal frequency; and between family meal frequency and adolescent intake across major USDA food groups, among Hispanic parent-adolescent dyads. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was cond

The association between parenting difficulties in children with autism and parental anxiety and the moderating role of parenting stress.

This study explores the impact of parenting difficulties in children with autism on parental anxiety, and analyzes the moderating role of parenting stress. A total of 207 primary caregivers of autistic children from 13 rehabilitation institutions in Nantong City were selected as subjects, covering the period from May 2024 to May 2025. Data was collected using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Chinese version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF). The hypothesized model was tested through correlation analysis and hierarc

Development of the Nighttime Parenting Scale: Differentiating nighttime versus general parenting practices and their impact on youth sleep health.

OBJECTIVES: The current study provides a novel method of assessing the impact of nighttime parenting practices on youth sleep health during the sensitive transition from childhood to adolescence (ie., peri-puberty). Specifically, we aimed to advance the measurement of nighttime parenting by developing a conceptually driven questionnaire for use in research and clinical settings. METHOD: A total of 625 parents (67.9% mothers) of peripubertal youth (age M=11.6, SD=1.31) were recruited online and completed self-report questionnaires. The sample was primarily White (67.4%), followed by 16.5% Blac

Is comorbidity in the eating disorders related to perceptions of parenting? Criterion validity of the revised Young Parenting Inventory.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies support the reliability and validity of the Young Parenting Inventory-Revised (YPI-R) and its use in investigating the role of parenting in the aetiology and maintenance of eating pathology. However, criterion validity has yet to be fully established. To investigate one aspect of criterion validity, this study examines the association between parenting and comorbid problems in the eating disorders (including general psychopathology and impulsivity). METHOD: The participants were 124 women with eating disorders. They completed the YPI-R and the Brief Symptom Inventor

The parenting project for teen mothers: the impact of a nurturing curriculum on adolescent parenting skills and life hassles.

OBJECTIVE: Many teen parents and their babies are at a significant disadvantage because of poverty and inadequate parenting skills. We undertook a study aimed at increasing parenting skills and improving attitudes of teen mothers through a structured psychoeducational group model based on the Nurturing Curriculum. METHODS: All adolescent mothers in the Young Parents' Program were offered enrollment in a 12-week group parenting curriculum (intervention group) and were compared with those who declined the intervention but agreed to participate as comparison subjects (comparison group). Mentalization-based intervention for parents with elevated parenting stress: protocol of a RCT of the lighthouse parenting programme in China.

UNLABELLED: The period of childhood and early adolescence, specifically prior to the age of 14, is a critical phase for the prevention of mental health problems. Nevertheless, prevention programs for this age group remain under recognized in China. In this domain, the lighthouse parenting programme (LPP) has successfully achieved initial results in several countries. This paper describes the protocol of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using a waiting list control design to evaluate the potential efficacy and applicability of LPP with Chinese parents. The trial is designed as an exploratory

Examining the characteristics of pregnant and parenting, and non-parenting young adults experiencing homelessness living with and without their children.

Pregnant and parenting young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH) face many challenges related to complex circumstances that lead to parent-child separation. This can be emotionally taxing on YAEH who are already disproportionately burdened by mental health disorders. Little is known about the parenting and mental health support needs among YAEH, particularly surrounding parent-child separation. To fill this gap, cross-sectional data from the Homeless Youth Risk and Resilience Survey, collected from YAEH ages 18-26 across seven US cities, were analyzed in this study. Demographic characteris
