The current study examined parent heart rate (HR) dynamic changing patterns and their links to observed negative parenting (i.e., emotional unavailability and psychological control) during a parent-child conflict resolution task among 150 parent-child dyads (child age ranged from 6 to 12 years, Mage = 8.54 ± 1.67). Parent HR was obtained from electrocardiogram (ECG) data collected during the parent-child conflict resolution task. Negative parenting was coded offline based on the video recording of the same task. Results revealed that emotionally sensitive parents during the task showed greater

The purpose of this study was to contrast the role of parental and non-parental (sibling, other family and non-family) supervisors in the supervision of learner drivers in graduated driver licensing systems. The sample consisted of 522 supervisors from the Australian states of Queensland (n=204, 39%) and New South Wales (n=318, 61%). The learner licence requirements in these two states are similar, although learners in Queensland are required to accrue 100h of supervision in a log book while those in New South Wales are required to accrue 120h. Approximately 50 per cent of the sample (n=255) w

Being a parent of a child with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a disease that causes progressive muscle weakness, involves a range of challenges. The purpose of this study was to explore what advice parents of children with severe SMA, in absence of effective therapies, would like to give to other parents. This study derives from two nationwide parental surveys in Sweden and Denmark, where content analysis was used to analyse one open-ended question about parents' advice to other parents. Ninety-five parents (parents of children diagnosed with SMA type 1 or 2, for whom respiratory support was c

The transmission of individual characteristics and behaviors across generations has frequently been studied in the social sciences. For a growing number of children, however, the biological father was present in the household for only part of the time; and for many children, stepfathers were present. What are the implications of these changes for the process of intergenerational transmission? To answer this question, this article compares intergenerational transmission among married, divorced, and stepparents. Two forms of reproduction are studied: educational attainment and church attendance.

U.S. immigrant parents encounter various challenges during the migration and resettlement process, such as acculturative stress and dissonance in parenting practices between the cultures in the U.S. and those in their country of origin. Although studies have established a link between increased perceived stress and reduced parenting self-efficacy in U.S.-born parents, which could be alleviated by levels of parental empowerment, little is known about this pathway in the context of migration. Guided by the Family Adjustment and Adaptation Response Model and with a focus on low-income immigrant p

Parent Training (PT) is not as effective for parents with histories of internalizing symptoms as it is for other parents. This study aimed to determine which dimensions of parenting, notably parenting efficacy, positive parenting, inconsistent discipline, and poor supervision, mediate the association between parent lifetime internalizing symptoms and post-PT child emotional and behavioral difficulties. One hundred fourteen parents (82% biological mothers) of children aged 9-12 years received PT at an urban children's mental health clinic. Parents reported their lifetime internalizing symptoms,

Many people with mental health conditions are parents, and research indicates that some would value and benefit from professional support for their parenting role. Yet little is known about their experiences of accessing these services, with this information dispersed amongst studies that primarily focus on other issues. This study aimed to bring together knowledge from current literature about the perspectives of parents living with mental health conditions about accessing professional support for parenting. A qualitative systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE, E

Background: Early life experiences can have a significant impact on an individual's later behaviour, the way they view the world, their beliefs and their success at forming strong interpersonal relationships. These factors may subsequently influence the way that the individual may parent their children, which in turn may have an effect on their child's behaviour, mental health and world view. Research has linked early traumatic life experiences in the parent's childhood to disorganised attachment to their own child. In this paper we describe the data collected from parents enrolled in the Avon

This article discusses the interactions with so-called "difficult" parents, who often suffer from mental illness that has never been treated. The article offers recommendations to decode the emotional communication of such parents who doubt their own ability to care for their children as well as that of the pediatrician's. A clinical case is presented of a mother who "can't take it anymore" with her three-year-old son, in order to focus in greater depth on improving interactions with the physician. The authors strongly recommend assessment of what parents say about their child as well as of fi

This study explores the impact of parenting difficulties in children with autism on parental anxiety, and analyzes the moderating role of parenting stress. A total of 207 primary caregivers of autistic children from 13 rehabilitation institutions in Nantong City were selected as subjects, covering the period from May 2024 to May 2025. Data was collected using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Chinese version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF). The hypothesized model was tested through correlation analysis and hierarc

OBJECTIVE: To compare parent characteristics and adolescent mental health and substance use behaviors among parents with a mental illness or in need of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment who did and did not receive treatment.
METHODS: We used paired parent-adolescent data from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. For parents who had any mental illness (weighted N = 5,529,000 for mothers and 2,208,000 for fathers), a serious or moderate mental illness (weighted N = 2,854,000 for mothers and 963,000 for fathers), or needed SUD treatment (weighted N = 1,200,000 for mother

Parental acceptance of routine childhood immunization is critical to protecting children's health, as high vaccination-coverage rates lead to decreased rates of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, to communicate effectively with parents about vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases, it is necessary to assess their vaccine-related attitudes and concerns continually. Recently the Palestine Ministry of Health has recorded epidemics of measles and mumps. Poor compliance with vaccination has been attributed to multiple factors including physician inadequacy advocating for vaccination and publi

Understanding differences in factors leading to positive outcomes in high-risk and low-risk offspring has important implications for preventive interventions. We identified variables predicting positive outcomes in a cohort of 235 offspring from 76 families in which one, both, or neither parent had major depressive disorder. Positive outcomes were termed resilient in offspring of depressed parents, and competent in offspring of non-depressed parents, and defined by two separate criteria: absence of psychiatric diagnosis and consistently high functioning at 2, 10, and 20 years follow-up. OBJECTIVE: To examine the common injuries in the children of teenage parents seen in the emergency department (ED) of a large level I trauma center.
STUDY DESIGN: We used admission records for guarantor age to assess common injuries.
RESULTS: The majority of the patients were white, in the care of the mother, and suffered accidental injuries, with bruising and skin marks the most common. Although children born to teenage parents are at an increased risk for child abuse, the rate of abuse in this study sample remained low. Falls and ingested objects were the leading mechanisms of injury in th

While a parental perception of child vulnerability to illness/injury is often used interchangeably with parental overprotection, research suggests that they are independent constructs. We hypothesized more frequent pediatric nonwell-child visits for perceived child vulnerability, but not for parental overprotection. The parents of 300 children, ages 2-5 years, enrolled in a health maintenance organization, were sampled. For children without medical conditions, there were no differences in nonwell-child care visits between the high perceived vulnerability and high parental protection groups (Wi

BACKGROUND: Becoming the parent of a new baby comes with a range of challenges including difficulties with emotional adjustment, couple relationship issues and difficulty managing common infant behaviors, such as crying and sleep problems. This time can be especially challenging for couples who experience a range of risk factors. Previous parenting interventions for parents of babies have shown mixed results. This protocol paper describes a randomized controlled trial of a group-based parenting intervention for high-risk parents expecting their first baby.

There is a spectrum of parental protective behaviors promoting child safety and security, ranging from neglect to overprotection. This paper describes the development and psychometric properties of a new measure of parental protective behaviors toward children age 2 to 10 years, the Parent Protection Scale (PPS). Items were selected to represent key dimensions of protective behaviors. Factor analyses suggested four subscales: Supervision, Separation Problems, Dependence, and Control. The PPS has acceptable internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and clinical validity. Norms by child age

This study examines how divorced single parents make sense of their parenting and co-parenting experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes in Türkiye. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis design, the study draws on two-stage, semi-structured online interviews with 23 divorced parents who had been officially divorced for 1-5 years, lived with at least one child under the age of 18, and had experienced the crisis conditions addressed in the study, including direct exposure to the February 6, 2023, earthquakes. The analysis ge

Hearing parents of deaf children may face parenting stress related to the multiple challenges associated with deafness. Several factors may contribute to the level of stress they encounter. This study examined the dyadic relationships between fathers' and mothers' parenting stress and potential associated factors. Twenty-one French parental couples of deaf children completed questionnaires assessing parenting stress, parental involvement, parental self-efficacy, and social support needs. The results revealed significant associations between parenting stress and the three measured factors-paren
