Retrospective evaluation of 211 patients with maxillofacial reconstruction using parietal bone graft for implants insertion.

PURPOSE: For a century, autologous bone grafts have been used in maxillofacial reconstruction. The ideal bone harvest site and grafting procedure remains a point of contention in regards to obtaining optimal long-term results with sufficient bone quantity and density without serious complications. More recently, confronted with growing patient requests and biomaterials development, maxillofacial surgeons and dentists have been considering these issues as they relate to pre-implant surgery. This study sought to evaluate implant success rate and complications following pre-implant surgery with p

Comparative finite element analysis of skull mechanical properties following parietal bone graft harvesting in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Parietal bone grafts are commonly used in cranio-maxillo-facial surgery. Both the outer and the internal layer of the calvarium can be harvested. The bone defect created by this harvesting may induce significant weakening of the skull that has not been extensively evaluated. Our aim was to evaluate the consequences of parietal bone graft harvesting on mechanical properties of the skull using a finite element analysis. METHODS: Finite elements models of the skull of 3 adult patients were created from CT scans. Parietal external and internal layer harvest models were created. Fron

Gómez-López-hernández syndrome versus rhombencephalosynapsis spectrum: a rare co-occurrence with bipartite parietal bone.

Rhombencephalosynapsis (RES) is a rare hindbrain malformation that could occur in isolation or as a part of a syndrome for example, Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome (GLH) or VACTERL-H. We identified male patient with severe RES. Ventriculomegaly, agenesis of septum pellucidum, very thin corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst were additional neuroimaging findings. He had brachyturricephaly, midface retrusion, low-set posteriorly rotated ears and bilateral parietal well circumscribed areas of alopecia. No corneal anesthesia was observed; thus, demonstrating many of the diagnostic criteria of G

Enhanced vertical bone augmentation in rat parietal bone using hydroxyapatite-coated polytetrafluoroethylene domes with Erbium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet pulsed laser deposition.

PURPOSE: To perform vertical bone augmentation on rat parietal bone by coating the inner surface of dense polytetrafluoroethylene (d-PTFE) domes with hydroxyapatite (HA) using Erbium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Er:YAG) pulsed laser deposition in a rat model. METHODS: The d-PTFE plate surface, α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) coating, and HA coating were measured using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction to confirm the replacement of α-TCP with HA via high-pressure steam sterilization. The dome was glued to the center of the rat parietal bone and closed with periosteal and epithelial

Simultaneous maxillary sinus lifting and implant placement with autogenous parietal bone graft: outcome of 17 cases.

The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the surgical technique of sinus floor elevation with autogenous parietal bone grafting in conjunction with immediate dental implants for the reconstruction of the maxilla in deficient maxillary alveolar ridges. Seventeen patients who underwent sinus floor elevation with bone graft from the parietal bone between 2005 and 2007 were included in the study. Cases of extremely deficient bone level in the alveolar ridge<4mm were included in the study. Seventy-seven implants (49 Staumann®, 24 Replace® and 4 Ankylos®) with different length and diame

Parietal bone agenesis with gracile bones and splenic hypoplasia/aplasia: clinico-pathologic report and differential diagnosis with review of cranio-gracile bone syndromes, "osteocraniostenosis" and Kleeblattschädel.

The findings in a newborn male with agenesis of parietal bones, gracile long bones, and hypoplasia of the spleen are presented. Although parietal agenesis is unique, the findings are compatible with 18 previously reported cases characterized by cranial hypomineralization, Kleeblatschädel, gracile bones, and splenic aplasia/hypoplasia, the nomenclature for which has been descriptive: gracile bone disorders, "osteocraniostenosis," "osteocraniosplenic syndrome." The term "osteocraniostenosis" may be inappropriate in that craniostenosis has been infrequently reported, a feature also of importance

[Headache as a manifestation of SAPHO syndrome with a lesion extending to the dura mater, parietal bone, and temporal muscle].

A 50-year-old woman with a history of palmoplantar pustulosis, femur osteomyelitis, and sterno-costo-clavicular hyperostosis presented with a chronic severe left temporal headache that had progressed during the previous year. Her CRP level was elevated. Cranial images showed Gadolinium-enhancement of the left temporal muscle, left parietal bone and dura mater. (99m)Tc-HMDP scintigram showed increased uptake in the left parietal bone, left sterno-costo-clavicular joint, right femoral head and intervertebral joints. Biopsy of the lesion demonstrated 1) proliferation of connective tissue in both

Mechanical characterization and optoelectronic measurement of parietal bone thickness before and after monocortical bone graft harvest: design and validation of a test protocol.

Parietal bone grafts are commonly used in craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, bone removal may weaken the parietal bone and lead to deleterious complications. The aim of our study was to design a test protocol for characterization of the impact resistance of parietal bone before and after monocortical bone graft harvest and to validate an optoelectronic measurement of parietal bone thickness. Twelve fresh human cadaver heads were used for the validation study. To evaluate impact resistance, we developed a pendulum Charpy impact testing machine. The impact force was gradually increased until

Correction of sagittal craniosynostosis using a novel parietal bone fixation technique: results over a 10-year period.

Isolated sagittal synostosis is a common form of craniosynostosis affecting roughly 1 in 5,000 children at birth. This results in a scaphocephalic head shape with a characteristically elongated anterior-posterior dimension and narrowed biparietal diameter. We present our experience with the correction of scaphocephaly due to sagittal synostosis using cranial vault reconstruction with a novel form of parietal bone fixation in 21 patients over 10 years. The medial fixation results in a hinging effect whereby transverse brain growth at the squamoid suture is enhanced. This results in excellent co

Vascularized full-thickness parietal bone grafts in maxillofacial reconstruction: the role of the galea and superficial temporal vessels.

Reconstruction of bony structures of the face is always a problem as big as the defect and the function that must be replaced. Everything from simple grafts to sophisticated distant bone flaps has been used. Based on the studies of Cutting et al., Psillakis et al., and Casanova et al., we have developed the full-thickness galeoparietal bone flap, initially for mandibular reconstruction, but of great use for all maxillofacial reconstructions. From July of 1987 to December of 1988, 14 patients have been operated on. The experience with this flap is shown in four patients as follows: primary reco

Enhanced Activation of Canonical Wnt Signaling Confers Mesoderm-Derived Parietal Bone with Similar Osteogenic and Skeletal Healing Capacity to Neural Crest-Derived Frontal Bone.

Bone formation and skeletal repair are dynamic processes involving a fine-tuned balance between osteoblast proliferation and differentiation orchestrated by multiple signaling pathways. Canonical Wnt (cWnt) signaling is known to playing a key role in these processes. In the current study, using a transgenic mouse model with targeted disruption of axin2, a negative regulator of cWnt signaling, we investigated the impact of enhanced activation of cWnt signaling on the osteogenic capacity and skeletal repair. Specifically, we looked at two calvarial bones of different embryonic tissue origin: the

The Fenestras Elisabeth Complex (Nova Structura) in the Parietal Bone of Plecotus auritus: Morphology, Topography, and Functional Significance.

Fenestrations of mammalian skull bones are rare and poorly understood, particularly within the parietal bone. In bats-a group characterised by advanced sensory specialisation and echolocation-superficial modifications of the cranial vault may have functional significance, yet their occurrence and organisation remain insufficiently documented. In this study, we describe an exceptional fenestrated complex in the posterolateral parietal bone of Plecotus auritus, comprising structural elements not previously recorded within Vespertilionidae. The aim of the study was to characterise in detail the m

Characterization of the mechanical properties of human parietal bones preserved in modified larssen solution, formalin and as fresh frozen.

PURPOSE: Although the fresh frozen (FF) cadaver is preferred for surgical applications, it is limited due to short usage time, unsuitable for reuse and the risk of infection. Due to its limited use, FF cadavers, which are covered by import in countries with insufficient body donation cause low-cost effectiveness. With the increase of real human tissue specimen necessities for surgical training, long-term preservation of the cadavers is crucial due to changes in mechanical properties. Therefore, studies on embalming solutions have increased in recent years. METHODS: We quantify the biomechanic

Pott's puffy tumour of the frontal and Parietal bones with subgaleal abscess as a complication of acute sinusitis - a case report.

Acute sinusitis is a frequent medical condition that can affect any age group and may lead infrequently to very serious life-threatening complications. These complications include the spread of infection to frontal and other cranial bones, meninges, and other intracranial structures that require urgent medical actions to prevent mortality and morbidity. We report the case of acute frontal sinusitis in a 14 years old male who presented with fever, severe headache, and fluctuant swelling of the nasal root, and right supraorbital and frontoparietal regions. Imaging studies demonstrated signs of l

A comparison of single-stage versus gradual fronto-parietal advancement in terms of extradural dead space and bone deposition.

This study was designed to investigate the differences between single-stage and gradual advancement of cranial vault in adult cats. Fifteen animals underwent fronto-parietal craniotomy including the roof of the frontal sinus. They were randomly assigned to three experimental groups; single-stage advancement (n = 5), gradual distraction with intact dura-bone attachments (n = 5), and gradual distraction after separation of the dura from the fronto-parietal bone segment (n = 5). Development of an extradural dead space and new bone formation were evaluated with CT scans at 1, 4 and 12 weeks. After

Fetal parietal bone fracture in late 3rd trimester secondary to traffic accident with improper seatbelt use: a case report.

Approximately half of the women in developed countries drive motor vehicles and the consequences of road traffic-related injuries involving pregnant women can be severe. This case report describes a rare injury of a parietal bone fracture in a fetus resulting from improper seatbelt use during a motor vehicle accident. A 36-year-old woman at 35 weeks of gestation was involved in a traffic accident while seated in the front seat wearing a seatbelt, but in an improper way for pregnant women. Transabdominal ultrasonography revealed a displaced fracture of the fetus's right parietal bone with an ov

Intrapartum ultrasonographic depiction of fetal malpositioning and mild parietal bone compression in association with large lower segment uterine leiomyoma.

With normal flexion of the fetal head prior to and during early normal labor, the fetal biparietal diameter becomes engaged in (and subsequently traverses) the anterior posterior aspect of the pelvic inlet. Thus, the biparietal diameter (characterized sonographically by depiction of the falx cerebri, thalami, and cavum septum pellucidum) will be obtainable upon transverse suprapubic placement of the ultrasound transducer during the first stage of labor. Deflexion, or extension, of the fetal head may be demonstrated sonographically at the level of the cervical spine. Recently, during intrapartu

Subperiosteal implantation of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) stimulates both chondrogenesis and osteogenesis in the tibia, but only osteogenesis in the parietal bone of a rat.

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether long bones and calvaria have distinct biological characteristics. Octacalcium phosphate (OCP), which is a precursor phase of the hydroxyapatite, has been reported to stimulate bone formation if implanted in the subperiosteal region of mouse calvaria. The present study was designed to investigate how the long bone and the calvarium respond to OCP implantation and to compare their biological characteristics. METHODS: The synthetic OCP was implanted into the subperiosteal region of rat tibiae and parietal bones being mixed with bovine type I collagen treated b

Parietal bone thickness for predicting operative transfusion and blood loss in patients undergoing spring-mediated cranioplasty for nonsyndromic sagittal craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: Variables that can predict outcomes in patients with craniosynostosis, including bone thickness, are important for surgical decision-making, yet are incompletely understood. Recent studies have demonstrated relative risks and benefits of surgical techniques for correcting head shape in patients with nonsyndromic sagittal craniosynostosis. The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationships between parietal bone thickness and perioperative outcomes in patients who underwent spring-mediated cranioplasty (SMC) for nonsyndromic sagittal craniosynostosis.
