Kimura disease (KD) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory condition of unknown cause, usually affecting young men of the Asian race. It is frequently associated with nephrotic syndrome. In this report, we present an uncommon case of KD in a 40-year-old Saudi man with sickle cell disease who presented with swelling on the right side of his face. CT scan of the head and neck showed the asymmetrical appearance of both parotid glands: the right side appeared heterogeneously enlarged, with adjacent moderate-to-significant fat stranding. Histologically, hyperplastic changes in lymphoid tissue were o

Castleman disease, also called angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia, is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by enlarged hyperplastic lymph nodes. Affected patients usually present with mediastinal lymphadenopathy; sometimes other groups of lymph nodes are involved, with or without associated systemic manifestations. We report a case of Castleman disease involving the intraparotid lymph node in a 15-year-old boy who presented with a 3-month history of a painless swelling of the right parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mass revealed only reactive hyperplasia. T

Castleman's disease of the parotid gland is an extremely rare entity, with fewer than 20 cases reported in world literature so far and only 1 previous case report describing the ultrasound findings. The Doppler findings of parotid Castleman's disease have never been described before to the best of the authors' knowledge. This report describes the ultrasonographic and Doppler findings in a histopathologically proven case of Castleman's disease of the left parotid gland in a young man.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to study the incidence of, and risk factors for developing complications following parotidectomy for benign disease, to improve preoperative patient counselling and better inform future surgical management.
METHODS: An 11-year retrospective review of 162 parotidectomies for benign disease, collecting and analysing data about presentation, investigations, surgical treatment, postoperative facial nerve function, Frey's syndrome and other surgical complications.
RESULTS: The mean age at presentation was 58 years. The commonest pathology was benign pleo

Since sialorrhea was initially described, it has been associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) but until now little is known about its pathophysiology. The authors studied parotid gland activity using scintigraphic analysis on 14 PD patients with sialorrhea and in eight healthy persons with matching ages. There was no difference between uptake and intra-glandular distribution by the parotid gland in the two groups but the parotid excretion speed in the PD patients was greater than that observed in healthy individuals. Our results reject the hypothesis of PD productive sialorrhea and point to r

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate quality of life after surgery for benign neoplastic disease of the parotid gland.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A quality of life questionnaire, which was created from the Hebrew version of the University of Washington Quality of Life prototype, was applied to 55 patients who underwent surgery for benign neoplastic parotid disease. All patients were examined in Baskent University Adana Teaching and Medical Research Center, where all except 10 subjects (who responded by phone) completed the quality of life questionnaire.
RESULTS: The highest overall score was 96.3 indicating no

In review of the clinical and sialographic ability to predict parotid pathology, it was found that the clinical exam was consistently more accurate. Sialographic findings and histopathology were compared in 119 patients who underwent 120 sialograms and subsequent parotidectomies. Sialography alone was able to diagnose a malignant tumor in only 8 per cent (1/13) of the cases. The sialogram proved most helpful for the clinician in the management of patients when the diagnosis was calculus, obstruction, or sialectasia. On the other hand, mass lesions in or adjacent to the parotid, diffuse enlarge

OBJECTIVES: Salivary gland ultrasonography is a promising non-invasive modality for the evaluation of Sjögren's disease (SjD), but its diagnostic utility is limited by operator dependency. This study aimed to evaluate the classification performance of radiomics-based machine learning using parotid gland ultrasonography and to compare it with conventional visual assessment.
METHODS: A total of 866 parotid gland ultrasound images from 202 participants were included: 123 patients fulfilling the 2016 ACR/EULAR criteria for SjD, 33 healthy controls, 24 non-Sjögren sicca patients, and 22 incomplete

Neoplasms of the salivary glands are of rare incidence, have a vague presentation, and follow a complex long-term clinical course. Both minor and major salivary glands have been implicated in dysplastic transformation, with parotid gland tumors being the most notable. Most of these tumors are benign in nature and are typically diagnosed and classified based on their histopathological presentation. In this report, we exhibit a rare case of basal cell adenomas (BCA), localized to the right parotid gland, in a 69-year-old male patient. Volume acquisition computed tomography (CT) imaging of the re

A 64-year-old man who had undergone treatment for left parotid adenocarcinoma presented with progressive exertional shortness of breath. Evaluation revealed metastatic invasion of the myocardium as a rare presentation of recurrent parotid adenocarcinoma. This case highlights the importance of using multimodal imaging methods in diagnostic evaluation and a collaborative multidisciplinary approach in managing patient care.

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is an immune-mediated disorder that commonly manifests in the salivary glands. As a recently described disorder, the description and classification of IgG4-related disease is an ongoing process. Diagnosis of IgG4-related disease requires integration of clinical history, histopathology, and radiographic findings, including ultrasonography and sialography. In this case report, we correlate parotid ultrasonographic and sialographic findings in a patient with proven IgG4-related disorder confirmed from analysis of previous submandibular gland resections. We

Kimura disease is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder commonly affecting young males. We present a 35-year-old male who had right parotid region and neck swellings for two years. The patient underwent imaging studies, blood investigations, and fine-needle aspiration cytology diagnostic of the Kimura disease. The patient was screened for the presence of renal disorder. However, there was no evidence of kidney involvement. The patient was started on oral steroid therapy and advised for further follow-up.

We report a rare case of arteriovenous malformation(AVM)of the parotid gland associated with Cowden disease successfully treated with preoperative embolization followed by surgical removal. A 39-year-old man with a history of Cowden disease presented with a pulsating and growing mass on his left lower jaw. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)and angiography revealed a high-flow AVM in the deep lobe of the left parotid gland. After intravascular embolization of the feeding arteries, surgery was performed using the NIM-response®3.0, facial nerve monitoring system. The AVM was almost complet

We retrospectively analysed the clinicopathological profiles of all 9 patients aged 16 years and under who had had parotidectomies at York Hospital, UK from 1995 to 2009. The operations were superficial parotidectomy (n=3), partial parotidectomy (n=4), and total parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve (n=2). The histological diagnoses were anomalies of the remnant of the branchial arch (n=4), and pleomorphic adenoma, haemangioma, cat scratch disease, juvenile chronic parotitis, and sarcoidosis (n=1 each) The histological diagnosis matched the clinical diagnosis in only 5. The most

Two male patients (aged 13 and 50 years) who presented with a complaint of painless mass in the parotid and submandibular regions, respectively, were found to have eosinophilia and increased blood immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. Following ultrasonographic examination of the masses, surgical excision was performed. Histopathologic evaluation revealed massive lymphocytic and eosinophilic infiltration. Histopathologic findings and the presence of peripheral eosinophilia and high IgE levels led to a diagnosis of Kimura's disease. Postoperatively, no recurrences were detected within a year follow-up

Facial paralysis due to cat scratch disease (CSD) has not been described previously. A case is reported where this self limiting benign condition presented in a child with a parotid lump and a lower motor neurone facial paralysis affecting the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve simulating a malignant tumour of the parotid gland. This case demonstrates a highly unusual presentation of CSD.
