Lung tissue from 13 cases of unexplained non-immunological hydrops fetalis was examined by in situ hybridisation to detect parvovirus. Four specimens contained parvovirus DNA in cells in the blood vessel lumina and alveoli. Twenty six control cases were negative for parvovirus DNA. As there was no known epidemic of parvovirus infection during the study period, this suggests that parvovirus is a relatively common cause of non-immunological hydrops fetalis. In situ hybridisation may have a role in clinical medicine, particularly for retrospective investigations.

We report on the morphological findings in 16 fetuses with serologically confirmed maternal parvovirus B19 infection. Typical routine morphological findings of the hydropic fetuses were the presence of abnormal erythroblasts with typical nuclear inclusions. These infected cells positively stained immunohistochemically with antibodies against a recombinant virus protein, as well as they ultrastructurally contained virus particles. Using in-situ hybridization techniques, we were able to demonstrate the presence of parvovirus B19 genome in the infected cells, while no other cell type was shown to

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), a human parvovirus, belongs to the genus Bocavirus of the Parvoviridae family. It causes wheezing in young children with acute respiratory tract infections. HBoV1 has been shown to infect polarized human airway epithelium (HAE) made in house, and induces airway epithelial damage. In this study, two commercially available HAE cultures, EpiAirway and MucilAir HAE, were examined for HBoV1 infection. Both HAE cultures support fully productive HBoV1 infection. Infected EpiAirway and MucilAir HAE cultures showed loss of cilia, disruption of the tight junction barrier, and

Patients with immunodeficiencies or some types of autoimmune diseases are dependent on safe therapy with intravenous immunoglobulins. State-of-the-art manufacturing processes provide a high safety standard by incorporating virus elimination procedures into the manufacturing process. Based on their mechanism, these procedures are grouped into three classes: partitioning, inactivation, and removal based on size. Because of current socioeconomic and ecological changes, emerging pathogens continue to be expected. Such pathogens may spread very quickly because of increased intercontinental traffic.

Respiratory tract infections are the primary cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), a member of the Parvoviridae family causes a wide spectrum of respiratory diseases in children, and gastroenteritis in adults. The mechanisms of latency, persistence, and reinfection of Bocavirus are poorly understood at present due to the lack of permissive cell lines and efficient animal models. Moreover, the dual infections of HBoV and other respiratory viruses further complicate the study of the pathogenicity of Bocaviruses. The data on immunological consequences of Bocavirus

This study is focused on the identification of the faecal virome of healthy chickens raised in high-density, export-driven poultry farms in Brazil. Following high-throughput sequencing, a total of 7743 de novo-assembled contigs were constructed and compared with known nucleotide/amino acid sequences from the GenBank database. Analyses with blastx revealed that 279 contigs (4 %) were related to sequences of eukaryotic viruses. Viral genome sequences (total or partial) indicative of members of recognized viral families, including Adenoviridae, Caliciviridae, Circoviridae, Parvoviridae, Picobirna

The virome has been increasingly investigated in numerous animal species and in different sites of the body, facilitating the identification and discovery of a variety of viruses. In spite of this, the faecal virome of healthy dogs has not been investigated. In this study we describe the faecal virome of healthy dogs and dogs with acute diarrhoea in Australia, using a shotgun metagenomic approach. Viral sequences from a range of different virus families, including both RNA and DNA families, and known pathogens implicated in enteric disease were documented. Twelve viral families were identified

Viruses are considered intracellular obligates with a nucleic acid RNA or DNA. They have the ability to encode proteins involved in viral replication and production of the protective coat within the host cells but require host cell ribosomes and mitochondria for translation. The members of the families Herpesviridae, Poxviridae, Papovaviridae, and Picornaviridae are the most commonly known agents for cutaneous viral diseases, but other virus families, such as Adenoviridae, Togaviridae, Parvoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Flaviviridae, and Hepadnaviridae, can also infect the skin. In this report prevalence rates of rodent viruses in laboratory animals are presented based on routine serological screening of mouse and rat colonies from European institutes. The prevalences found during the period 2000-2003 are compared with those reported for 1981-1984 and 1990-1993. It is shown that some infections were eliminated from laboratory animal colonies (e.g. K-virus and polyomavirus) by taking preventative measures whereas other infections such as mouse hepatitis virus and parvoviruses remained at a high rate. Further decreases in prevalence rates in the last 10 years were found

Upon infection, virions or subviral nucleoprotein complexes are transported from the cell surface to the site of viral transcription and replication. During viral egress, particles containing viral proteins and nucleic acids again move from the site of their synthesis to that of virus assembly and further to the plasma membrane. Because free diffusion of molecules larger than 500 kDa is restricted in the cytoplasm, viruses as well as cellular organelles employ active, energy-consuming enzymes for directed transport. This is particularly evident in the case of neurotropic viruses that travel lo

A small hemagglutinating virus belonging to the Parvoviridae Family was isolated from a 70 day-old pig fetus in a breeding herd in which infertility, metritis and abortions were reported. The virus, named 85/193L, was isolated either in primary pig kidney (PK) cells or in a continuous cell line of minipig kidney origin (MPK), both cell cultures actively growing. It produced a typical cytopathic effect (CPE) starting from the 3rd passage and intranuclear inclusions surrounded by a halo were observed in stained preparations. The isolate was completely resistant to ether, chloroform and to pH 3;

The autonomous parvoviruses cause a broad spectrum of acute and chronic infections of animals and man. The discrimination of sites of viral replication from sites of viral sequestration is an important goal in elucidating the pathogenesis of these diseases. It is possible to employ strand-specific RNA hybridization probes in such analyses because a 'plus' sense probe will react with single stranded virion DNA and duplex replicative form DNA, but a 'minus' sense probe will react preferentially with obligate replicative intermediates (duplex replicative form DNA and mRNA). Strand-specific RNA hy

Recent reports have documented human parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy, which may lead to spontaneous abortion, stillbirth or hydrops fetalis. Transplacental infection in a case of hydrops fetalis is demonstrated by light and electron microscopy observation of virus inclusions in all tissues examined. Parvovirus particles measuring approximately 20 nm were observed within the nuclei of erythropoietic cells. The parvovirus virions were observed most commonly as randomly distributed particles and rarely in crystalline assays. Thus definitive evidence of fetal infection confined to red cell p

Goose parvovirus (GPV) is a highly lethal infectious pathogen primarily affecting goslings under one month old, with infection resulting in nearly 100 % mortality. However, no recombinant vaccine has been proven effective in preventing GPV infection. This study aims to structurally characterize GPV virus-like particles (VLPs) produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae using cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) and three-dimensional reconstruction, to explore potential binding receptors, and to preliminarily verify the immunogenicity of GPV VLPs. The results show that GPV VLPs produced from Saccharom

Wild animals are considered reservoirs for emerging and reemerging viruses, such as the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Previous studies have reported that bats and ticks harbored variable important pathogenic viruses, some of which could cause potential diseases in humans and livestock, while viruses carried by reptiles were rarely reported. Our study first conducted snakes' virome analysis to establish effective surveillance of potential transboundary emerging diseases. Consequently, Adenoviridae, Circoviridae, Retroviridae, and Parvoviridae were identifie

An incomplete embryo of 9 weeks development from a woman infected by human parvovirus B19 during early pregnancy was histologically examined. B19-DNA was detected in both embryonic and placental tissue by dot-blot hybridization. Focal vascular endothelial damage was found throughout the entire embryo and placenta together with mononuclear infiltrations around the vessels. In the placenta these mononuclear cells belonged for the greater part to the cytotoxic and/or suppressor T-cell group. One eye showed lens abnormalities and retinal folds. The other eye was microphthalmic and aphakic and show

Parvovirinae viruses are a subfamily of the Parvoviridae family that can infect various vertebrate hosts and cause infections ranging from asymptomatic to severe disease. This study performed a metagenomic assessment of the sheep sera virome to evaluate emerging and exotic viruses in border zones, and identified a novel copiparvovirus. The DNA of Ovine copiparvovirus (OVPV) was only observed in the serum of sheep in Dahe Town of Hami City. Furthermore, the region-dependent prevalence was 10.4% (96/807) from 2022 to 2024. The OVPV genome was 5,219 nucleotides (nt) long and shared 99.3% nt ident
