Parvovirus B19 is a small single-stranded DNA virus and a potent inhibitor of erythropoiesis, due to its cytotoxicity to erythroid progenitor cells. Infection with parvovirus B19 during pregnancy can cause several serious complications in the fetus, such as fetal anemia, neurological anomalies, hydrops fetalis, and fetal death. Early diagnosis and treatment of intrauterine parvovirus B19 infection is essential in preventing these fetal complications. Testing maternal serum for IgM antibodies against parvovirus B19 and DNA detection by PCR can confirm maternal infection. If maternal infection h

Parvovirus B19 (B19) causes many clinical disorders, of which the most common are erythema infectiosum, aplastic crisis complicating chronic hemolytic anemia, and hydrops fetalis. In young adults, the skin eruption caused by B19 is accompanied with polyarthritis and polyarthralgia in 60% of the cases. The joint abnormalities predominate in the hands and feet and usually resolve within a week (range 2-21 d). Serological tests show IgM antibodies against B19, confirming the diagnosis of recent infection. Protracted polyarthritis occurs in some patients and seems associated with the DR4 histocomp

Parvovirus B19 is the viral agent that causes the childhood exanthum erythema infectiosum, or fifth disease. Approximately 50% of pregnant women are seropositive for this agent and thus immune to primary infection. However, acute infection may develop in seronegative pregnant women exposed to B19. Acute B19 infections during pregnancy have been associated with miscarriage and hydrops fetalis. This latter condition is amenable to fetal therapy via intrauterine transfusion.

Parvovirus B19, the only known human pathogenic parvovirus, is associated with a wide range of disease manifestations. In healthy individuals, the major presentation of B19 infection is erythema infectiosum. In patients with underlying hemolytic disorders, infection is the primary cause of transient aplastic crisis. In immunosuppressed patients, persistent infection may develop that presents as pure red cell aplasia and chronic anemia. In utero infection may result in hydrops fetalis or congenital anemia. Diagnosis is based on examination of bone marrow and virologic studies. Much is known of

B 19 parvovirus is a widespread virus with primary infestation generally occurring in childhood through family and community outbreaks. Its most typical manifestation is transient erythroblastopenia with aplastic crisis, often profound, mostly affecting patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, and eventually patients with defective erythropoiesis (chronic hypoplastic anemia, iron deficiency anemia). In normal individuals the primary infestation is usually asymptomatic but may give transient hematological signs for few days: moderate reticulocytopenia, thrombopenia and neutropenia. Clinically tw

Since 1986, 2,279 pregnant women were screened for anti Parvovirus B19 IgG and IgM antibodies. Of them 41% were seronegative, 54% had specific IgG but no IgM antibodies, indicating an infection in earlier life. Acute infection could be demonstrated by IgM antibody detection in 114 pregnant women (32% in the first, 54% in the second and 14% in the third trimester). Hydrops fetalis occurred in 10 of the 114 pregnancies (8.7%). In five of these cases intrauterine exchange transfusion was done and until now four healthy babies were born. Three fetuses died and one pregnancy was terminated, and two

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) has a wide clinical spectrum, ranging from an asymptomatic infection to a life threatening one. During pregnancy, it can lead to fetal loss and hydrops fetalis. This retrospective study examined the incidence rates of B19V in Israel, analyzing anonymized electronic medical records of 2.7 million individuals between January 2015 and September 2023. A generalized linear model with a Poisson distribution was fit to the data, adjusting for potential confounders. A marked increase in B19V was observed in 2023, with an adjusted incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 6.6 (95% CI 6.

There are several infections in adults that warrant special consideration in pregnant women given the potential fetal consequences. Among these are toxoplasmosis, parvovirus B19, and cytomegalovirus. These infections have an important impact on the developing fetus, depending on the timing of infection. This article reviews the modes of transmission as well as maternal and neonatal effects of each of these infections. In addition, the article outlines recommended testing, fetal surveillance, and treatment where indicated.

Feline parvovirus (FPV) or feline panleukopenia virus is a highly contagious, life-threatening infectious virus in cats. Although FPV vaccination is routinely practiced in China, clinical diseases continue to occur. The investigation of genotypes and viral evolution can contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of FPV. Therefore, this study aimed to provide an up-to-date understanding of the epidemiological, genotypic, and phylogenetic characteristics of FPV. In total, 152 rectal swabs were collected from diseased cats. All swab samples were tested for FPV using molecular methods.

We report a neonate with angio-oedema following fetal hydrops caused by maternal parvovirus B19 infection. Levels of complement components, including total haemolytic complement activity and C1 inhibitor concentration, were within normal ranges in cord blood. Neonatal angio-oedema might be included in the clinical spectrum of parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy.

A patient with refractory anemia with an excess of blasts in transformation developed pancytopenia and a concurrent interstitial pneumonia 110 days after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Bone marrow examination showed 0.4% giant proerythroblasts and 86.2% granulocytes, some of them large with a bizarre configuration and the others of normal size. Serum folate level was found low, 0.6 ng/ml. Immunocytochemistry with a B19-specific monoclonal antibody MAB8292 revealed B19 capsid antigen only in erythroblasts and large, bizarre granulocytes, but not in granulocytes of normal size. In situ

Parvovirus B19 virus infection is widespread among humans because of its highly infectious and obstinate nature, with up to 80% of the population testing positive for IgG antibodies against the virus. Pronormoblasts observed in biopsy are the hallmarks of PVB19 infection. In addition, PVB19 affects the skin, heart, brain, joints, and liver and can be diagnosed through antibody detection or DNA detection via PCR. Due to its capsid proteins' high affinity for bone marrow receptors, its main presentation is the suppression of bone marrow functions. It has been shown to affect patients with hemoly

BACKGROUND: Papular-purpuric gloves-and-socks syndrome, characterized by focal acral purpuric eruptions with a symmetrical distribution, is a rare but representative purpuric dermatosis closely associated with parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection. However, several atypical presentations such as involvement of other sites and generalized involvement have been recently reported in PVB19 infected patients. Such multifaceted features can cause considerable confusion when making a diagnosis of purpuric eruption associated with PVB19.
OBJECTIVES: Describe two febrile patients with atypical presentation

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy can lead to nonimmune fetal hydrops, miscarriage, and intrauterine fetal death (IUFD). Some studies have suggested that parvovirus B19 infection may surprisingly often result in nonhydropic fetal death during the third trimester, in the absence of maternal serological evidence of acute infection. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of parvovirus B19 DNA among fetuses from miscarriages and IUFDs.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied 535 unborn fetuses, including 120 fetuses from miscarriages and 169 from IUFDs. The control

Parvovirus-B19 has been reported a rare cause of acute laryngitis. Here, we described an 11-month-old girl who had prolonged acute laryngitis and neutropenia associated with parvovirus-B19 infection. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy resulted in resolution of her symptoms, except neutropenia. We concluded that parvovirus-B19 can cause prolonged laryngitis and intravenous immunoglobulin treatment should be considered.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the platelet count in fetuses undergoing cordocentesis for hydrops caused by parvovirus infection.
STUDY DESIGN: Fetal platelets were measured at cordocentesis in 11 pregnant women who underwent the procedure because of fetal ascites and/or hydrops caused by parvovirus infection. Thrombocytopenia was defined as mild (platelet count < 150 x 10(9)/L), moderate (platelet count < or = 100 x 10(9)/L), or severe (platelet count to < or = 50 x 10(9)/L). Paired Student t test was performed to compare the platelet count before and after the transfusion

The parvovirus B 19 is part of the family of the parvoviridae and shows a distinctive tropism for erythropoid precursor cells. The virus causes in children the erythema infectiosum (German measles). Meanwhile, parvovirus B 19 infections can be associated with a wide spectrum of hematological and non-hematological complications (e.g. liver failure, hepatitis, aplastic crises primarily in association with chronic hemolytic anaemias, chronic arthritis, arthralgia/arthritis, transient/persistent anaemias, vasculitis, glomerulonephritis). Intrauterine infections can lead to specific or permanent or
