Isospora atticorae n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the white-thighed swallow Atticora tibialis (Cassin, 1853) (Passeriformes: Passeri: Hirundinidae) in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of coccidians in Neotropical wild avifauna remains significantly underestimated, particularly within the family Hirundinidae. While cosmopolitan and widely distributed hosts like Hirundo rustica Linnaeus, 1758 dominate the literature with three described Isospora spp., ecological traits of other swallows may drive different parasitic dynamics. This study provides the first integrative characterization of a coccidian parasite from Atticora tibialis (Cassin, 1853), a resident swallow strictly associated with complex and preserved Neotropical forest biomes. METHODS: Fec

Coccidia of New World passerine birds (Aves: Passeriformes): a review of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and Isospora Schneider, 1881 (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae).

In the New World, the avian order Passeriformes comprises 47 families and 2,453 species, yet to date only 21 (45%) of the families and 58 (2%) of the species have been examined for coccidia, and from these only two species of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and 81 species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 have been described. This review contributes to our understanding of the morphology and systematics of coccidian parasites of passeriforms, providing a scientific basis for the identification of sporulated oöcysts recovered from the faeces of passerine birds from North, Central and South America. Spinetails are a suboscine passerines of the genus Synallaxis Vieillot, 1818 which have great interest for ornithology, given the wide diversity of 37 species that are distributed throughout the Neotropical region. Despite this wide diversity and distribution, Synallaxis spp. have never been recorded as hosts of coccidian parasites. In this context, the current study describes a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 from rufous-capped spinetails Synallaxis ruficapilla Vieillot, 1819 captured in the Itatiaia National Park, which is a federal conservation unit in Southeastern Brazil. Black-goggled tanagers Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) are passerine birds commonly observed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Argentina and Paraguay. Tanagers are among the passerines with the highest prevalence and density of coccidian parasites, mainly due to their frugivorous feeding habits that favor fecal-oral transmission. In this context, the current study identifies a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing black-goggled tanagers captured in the Itatiaia National Park, a protected area with a high degree of vulnerability in Southeastern Brazil. Chewing lice (Phthiraptera) on manakins (Passeriformes: Pipridae) from Costa Rica, with description of a new species of the genus Tyranniphilopterus (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae).

One hundred and seventy individuals of five species of manakins (Passeriformes: Pipridae) were examined for chewing lice (Phthiraptera) in Costa Rica. Six species of chewing lice were identified. Chewing lice or their eggs were found on 26% individuals (28 positive/109 examined) of Long-tailed Manakins (Chiroxiphia linearis), the most numerous manakin species examined. There were significant differences in prevalences and intensities of infestation between males and females. No lice were found on females (n = 28) compared to 35% (24 positive/69 examined) prevalence in males. In older males, th

Isospora habiae n. sp. (Chromista: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Red-crowned Ant-tanagers Habia rubica (Vieillot, 1817) (Aves: Passeriformes: Cardinalidae) in South America.

The Red-crowned Ant-tanager Habia rubica (Vieillot, 1817) is a forest-dependent passerine that inhabits the understory of humid forests and is widely distributed throughout Central and South America, extending northward into Mexico. Wild birds may host a broad diversity of parasites, among which coccidia constitute one of the most species-rich and taxonomically complex groups. Within this context, the present study reports a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing Red-crowned Ant-tanagers captured in Itatiaia National Park, a protected area of high ecological vulnerability in sout

Detection of Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, including three novel genotypes in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) collected from songbirds (Passeriformes) across Canada.

Lyme disease is reported across Canada, but pinpointing the source of infection has been problematic. In this three-year, bird-tick-pathogen study (2004-2006), 366 ticks representing 12 species were collected from 151 songbirds (31 passerine species/subspecies) at 16 locations Canada-wide. Of the 167 ticks/pools tested, 19 (11.4%) were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.). Sequencing of the rrf-rrl intergenic spacer gene revealed four Borrelia genotypes: B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) and three novel genotypes (BC genotype 1, BC genotype 2, BC genotype 3).
