A previously healthy 15-year-old girl was bitten by a cat in her left thumb. Despite initial treatment with penicillin she developed osteomyelitis after a period of four months. Pasteurella multocida was cultured from the necrotic bone. The infection showed low activity and was successfully treated with surgery combined with penicillin.

Calves were inoculated intratracheally with 5 X 10(7), 5 X 10(8), or 5 X 10(9) colony forming units of either 18-hour stationary phase cultures or 4-hour log phase cultures of Pasteurella haemolytica. The log phase culture at all concentrations produced more severe clinical signs, hematological changes and pulmonary lesions at postmortem examination than did the corresponding stationary phase culture. More severe effects were seen with the larger doses especially with the log phase culture. Fibrinous bronchopneumonia with focal or multifocal necrosis was consistently produced by both the stati

Four outbreaks of hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Pasteurella multocida multocida occurred in a population of 1,800 fallow deer (Dama dama) during 1992-1996. A total of 340 fallow deer were submitted for postmortem examination. Pasteurellosis was diagnosed in 273 of 312 deer suspected of having septicemia. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 257 animals, and the diagnosis was based on typical pathologic changes alone in the other 16 animals. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from 219 of 248 samples of cerebrospinal fluid. Eighteen animals were observed moribund with sever

We describe an uncommon case of a six-week-old male infant with Pasteurella multocida bacteremia. He presented to a tertiary care pediatric hospital emergency department (ED) in the American southeast (Arkansas, USA) with a new onset of fever and decreased oral (PO) intake. On exam, he was irritable, febrile, and tachycardic with no significant findings. Infectious workup was initially remarkable for an elevated procalcitonin of 7.25 ng/mL (reference range: 0.00-0.10 ng/mL) and a low white blood cell count of 3.2 K/cmm (reference range: 5.0-19.5 K/cmm). He was admitted and treated empirically

We present the case of an 82-year-old woman, previously independent in activities of daily living, who developed fever, myalgias, and headache over one week. Two weeks earlier, she had been treated with antibiotics for a lower respiratory tract infection. The patient had no history of immunosuppression and was a pet owner. She was admitted to the emergency department (ED) with a fever and multiple perforating wounds on her hands. Laboratory findings revealed elevated inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein and procalcitonin, without an obvious infectious source. During observation a

Many Pasteurella multocida strains are carried as commensals, while some cause disease in animals and humans. Some type D strains cause atrophic rhinitis in pigs, where the causative agent is known to be the Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT). PMT activates three families of G-proteins-Gq/11, G12/13, and Gi/o-leading to cellular mitogenesis and other sequelae. The effects of PMT on whole animals in vivo have been investigated previously, but only at the level of organ-specific pathogenesis. We report here the first study to screen all the organs targeted by the toxin by using the QE antibody th

Pasteurella multocida is a heterogeneous species that is a primary pathogen of many different vertebrates. This Gram-negative bacterium can cause a range of diseases, including fowl cholera in birds, haemorrhagic septicaemia in ungulates, atrophic rhinitis in swine, and lower respiratory tract infections in cattle and pigs. One of the primary virulence factors of P. multocida is lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Recent work has shown that this crucial surface molecule shows significant structural variability across different P. multocida strains, with many producing LPS structures that are highly simi

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative bacillus, is rarely associated with acute respiratory infections.
AIM: To describe a case of fatal P. multocida epiglottitis.
RESULTS: A 52-year-old gentleman developed a sore throat and died suddenly within an hour of seeing his general practitioner. Post-mortem findings were consistent with death due to laryngeal obstruction associated with epiglottitis and laryngopharyngitis. A swab taken from the epiglottis for culture was positive for P. multocida.
CONCLUSION: Physicians should be aware of the potential for acute deterioration in adu

Blepharoconjunctivitis and hypopyon were observed in eyes of turkeys infected during 2 epornitics of fowl cholera. Blepharoconjunctivitis, hypopyon, anterior synechiae, and panophthalmitis were observed sporadically in turkeys experimentally exposed to Pasteurella multocida via drinking water. P. multocida was isolated from these lesions.

Pasteurella multocida is the main secondary bacterium isolated from cases of swine pneumonia. Although highly pathogenic strains of P. multocida have been associated with primary septic lesions and polyserositis in pigs, studies on this pathological presentation in naturally occurring cases are limited. The aim of this work was to characterize the clinical, pathological and molecular findings in cases of P. multocida polyserositis in growing-finishing pigs in a commercial farm in Brazil. The mean age of 17 investigated pigs was 120 days. Clinically, the disease was acute (11/17), with clinical

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is the highly contagious causative agent of a broad range of diseases in animals as well as an occasional human pathogen. Economically significant infections caused by P. multocida include avian fowl cholera, rabbit snuffles, and hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle, goats and pigs. Chemotherapy of pasteurellosis infections has some limitations, such as high cost of treatment, low efficacy, and the possibility of therapy failure due to antibiotic resistance. Prophylactic immunization offers a safe and effective preventive measure in case of zoonotic diseases. B

We present a case of fulminant Pasteurella multocida sepsis in a 66-year-old man who had undergone a renal transplant. Our patient lived with two dogs and a cat with which he was very close. We propose that his bacteraemia might have resulted from direct inoculation of P multocida via his cat licking the venous stasis ulcers on his legs. The patient's clinical course was complicated by cardiopulmonary failure and he ultimately succumbed to his infection. P multocida is a rare cause of infections in immunocompromised hosts, epidemiologically linked to exposure to cats, dogs, and other animals.

Pasteurellosis is one of the most important respiratory diseases facing economically valuable farm animals such as poultry, rabbit, cattle, goats and pigs. It causes severe economic loss due to its symptoms that range from primary local infection to fatal septicemia. Pasteurella multocida is the responsible pathogen for this contagious disease. Chemotherapeutic treatment of Pasteurella is expensive, lengthy, and ineffective due to the increasing antibiotics resistance of the bacterium, as well as its toxicity to human consumers. Though, biosecurity measures played a role in diminishing the spr

Most cases of community-acquired pneumonia result from infection with predictable common pathogens. However, rare patients develop pneumonia from unusual bacterial species such as Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative oral commensal of most dogs and cats. The majority of P. multocida infections involve skin and soft tissue and complicate a bite or scratch. I report the case of an elderly man who owned 16 cats and developed bacteremic pneumonia with P. multocida. .

The clinical manifestation of human infections with Pasteurella multocida is most often cellulitis and this pathogen rarely causes septicaemia. We describe 2 Swedish patients with P. multocida septicaemia who were admitted to the same ward within the space of 7 months.

A 71-year-old woman presented with acute non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. She proved to have a Pasteurella multocida pneumonia, with blood stream invasion by the organism, and required positive pressure ventilation for 53 days. Penicillin G., the drug of choice for this infection, failed to reverse the steady decline in her arterial oxygen-tension, and it was only after treatment with chloramphenicol and prednisolone that she began to improve. Serological tests strongly indicated the presence of a Staphylococcus aureus infection and the delay in giving antibiotics appropriate to this second p

Pasteurella multocida is often found in local infections after animal bites. Septic conditions however are rare. A case of late infection by P. multocida at the site of the osteosynthesis 1 year after a primarily healed pertrochanteric fracture is described. The patient had a cat. After extraction of the plate and screws and treatment with penicillin the infection healed uneventfully.

Thirty-four rat carcases from 11 poultry farms were examined for the presence of Pasteurella multocida; 14 out of 34 (41 per cent) proved positive after mouse inoculation, compared with five out of 34 (14 per cent) using media alone. No salmonellae were recovered from 27 rat carcases using enrichment media. Poultry pasteurellosis was present on two farms with infected rats and the same serotype was present in rats and poultry in those cases.

The clinical data of a 14-year old female patient with posttraumatic meningitis by Pasteurella multocida are reported. The behaviour of the isolated strain is recorded in cultural and biochemical aspect as well as in animal experiment. The importance of the infection with Pasteurella multocida is lined out and the possible origin of the disease in the reported case is discussed. Finally some problems of special bacteriological diagnosis are explained and hints are given in this respect.

Pasteurella multocida infects a wide range of animals, causing hemorrhagic septicemia or infectious pneumonia. Iron is an essential nutrient for growth, colonization, and proliferation of P. multocida during infection of the host, and competition for iron ions in the host is a critical link in the pathogenesis of this pathogen. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the study of the iron uptake system of P. multocida, including its occurrence and regulatory mechanisms. In order to provide a systematic theoretical basis for the study of the molecular pathogenesis of the P. mult
