To explore the treatment of Chinese herbal medicine extracts on infectious rhinitis caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum, a strain of Avibacterium paragallinarum was isolated from the nasal cavity and infraorbital sinus of chickens suspected of infectious rhinitis, it was biologically identified as Bacillus paracarinus. Extracts of seven kinds of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine mixtures were explored to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by the microdilution method and the disc diffusion method. The antibacterial activity against pathogenic bact

Histophilus somni is an obligate inhabitant of the respiratory and genital mucosal surfaces of bovines and ovines. An individual strain can be a primary pathogen, an opportunistic pathogen, or a commensal, but can also move between these classifications if introduced into an appropriate site (e.g. the lungs) under conditions that favor bacterial persistence. H. somni is one of the bacterial agents responsible for bovine respiratory disease complex and can also cause a variety of systemic diseases in cattle and sheep. Isolates from disease sites, such as the lungs, heart, and brain, express a w

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for the majority of feline oral neoplasms and carries a poor prognosis; however, the oral microbiome in affected cats remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to preliminarily describe the oral bacterial communities of cats with OSCC and compare them with those of clinically healthy cats using DNA amplicon sequencing. Oral swabs were collected from cats with OSCC, including tumor surfaces, tumor cut surfaces, and clinically normal mucosa distant from the tumor (n = 20 total samples), and from the gingival margin of healthy cats (n = 12). DNA w

This study evaluates the role of aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) as a maintenance host and reservoir for significant respiratory pathogens hindering bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) conservation; Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae and leukotoxigenic Pasteurellaceae. An experimental commingling trial and regional disease surveillance revealed significant interspecies transmission risks and epidemiological patterns. Experimentally, 80% of bighorn sheep exposed to aoudad inoculated with M. ovipneumoniae and leukotoxigenic Pasteurellaceae died of pneumonia under both indirect and direct contact conditions. Conver

Research on the microbiome's impact on abortion and repeat breeder syndrome (RBS) in sheep is lacking, despite the fact that the vaginal bacterial microbiota is related to their reproductive performance. To compare ewe vaginal bacterial microbial communities, vaginal swabs were randomly taken from aborted ewes (A), repeat breeder ewes (RB), and healthy ewes (H), and 16S rRNA gene Illumina MiSeq amplicon sequencing was performed after DNA was extracted. Six common pathogens associated with reproductive disease were detected by PCR. Differences existed in alpha diversity between group A and grou

BACKGROUND: Bacterial flagellin is a major target of innate and adaptive immunity, both of which can promote and/or compensate for deficiencies in each other's function.
METHODS: To investigate the role of innate immune detection of flagellin irrespective of adaptive immunity, we examined the consequences of loss of Toll-like receptor 5 (T5) and/or Nod-like receptor 4 (N4) upon a Rag1-deficient background.
RESULTS: Mice lacking Toll-like receptor 5 and Rag1 (T5/Rag-DKO) exhibited frequent lethal Pasteurellaceae-containing abscesses that prevented breeding of these mice. Mice lacking Toll-lik

Infectious coryza (IC) is often a curse for poultry farmers when it occurs concurrently with several pathogens causing swollen head syndrome. The disease is caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum, which inflicts initial damage to the nasal and respiratory epithelium. This facilitates the progression of disease pathology across the nasal cavity, thereby providing a platform for multiplication of opportunistic microbes. In this study, we attempted to investigate the early entrance and migration pattern of A. paragallinarum in chicken and Japanese quail following experimental infection, by employi

The aim of the present study was to investigate the pathology in normal or immunosuppressed chickens followed intravenous or intraperitoneal inoculation with a well-characterized strain of Gallibacterium anatis. Two groups of 30 15-week-old commercial brown laying chickens were used, having been screened and found negative for Gallibacterium organisms. One group was treated with 5-fluorouracil to promote heterophil depletion, while the other was saline treated. Ten days later 15 chickens from each group were inoculated either intravenously or intraperitoneally with 3.3 x 10(7) colony-forming u

The purpose of this study was to determine any differences in pathogenicity when sheep are experimentally infected with different Histophilus somni isolates: a) 2336 bovine origin strain; b) an isolate from ram orchitis and epididymitis; c) an isolate from the brain of a sheep with neurological signs; d) an isolate from the vagina of a clinically healthy ewe. A total of 20 rams divided in groups of 5 animals each were inoculated in the epididymis with 1 x 10(7) CFU/mL of H. somni; a negative control group of 5 rams was used. All groups inoculated with H. somni showed some epididymitis, but the

Between 1994 and 2002, a total of 390 (46.3%) Mannheimia haemolytica, 292 (34.7%) Pasteurella multocida, and 160 (19.0%) Histophilus somni were isolated at the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory from lungs from 6-18-month-old beef cattle with pneumonia. The ratio of M. haemolytica isolations to P. multocida isolations decreased from 3.1 in 1994 to 0.8 in 2000 while increasing to 1.5 in 2002. Mannheimia haemolytica isolations significantly (P < 0.05) decreased from 62.5% in 1994 to between 30.6% and 50.4% in 1998--2002. Pasteurella multocida isolations significantly (P < 0.05) increa

The nutria (Myocastor coypus), a semi-aquatic rodent native to South America, poses significant ecological and agricultural threats as an invasive species in France, where it continues to proliferate despite sustained control efforts. A fatal case of pneumonia in a nutria from Marseille (France) prompted a microbiological investigation that led to the isolation, taxonomic classification, genomic characterization, and phylogenetic analysis of Necropsobacter rosorum. Whole-genome sequencing of the N. rosorum strain RG01 revealed a genome size of 2,505,657 base pairs and 2303 predicted open readi

OBJECTIVES: To identify and analyse the first ESBL gene from Mannheimia haemolytica.
METHODS: Susceptibility testing was performed according to CLSI. Plasmids were extracted via alkaline lysis and transferred by electrotransformation. The sequence was determined by WGS and confirmed by Sanger sequencing.
RESULTS: The M. haemolytica strain 48 showed high cephalosporin MICs. A single plasmid, designated pKKM48, with a size of 4323 bp, was isolated. Plasmid pKKM48 harboured a novel blaROB gene, tentatively designated blaROB-2, and was transferred to Pasteurella multocida B130 and to Escherichia

Nitric oxide has bactericidal and virucidal properties. Nasal instillation of a nitric oxide releasing solution (NORS) on arrival at the feedlot was recently reported as inferior to a parenteral injection of tilmicosin (macrolide antibiotic) for control of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in cattle at high-risk of developing BRD. We hypothesized that this inferiority was due to differences between treatments with regards to their effects on the nasopharyngeal microbiota. The objective was to compare nasal instillation of NORS versus parenteral administration of tilmicosin regarding their effec

Pneumonia of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) is a dramatic disease of high morbidity and mortality first described more than 80 years ago. The etiology of the disease has been debated since its initial discovery, and at various times lungworms, Mannheimia haemolytica and other Pasteurellaceae, and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae have been proposed as primary causal agents. A multi-factorial "respiratory disease complex" has also been proposed as confirmation of causation has eluded investigators. In this paper we review the evidence for each of the candidate primary agents with regard to causal crite

Histophilus somni (Haemophilus somnus) is an obligate inhabitant of the mucosal surfaces of bovines and sheep and an opportunistic pathogen responsible for respiratory disease, meningoencephalitis, myocarditis, arthritis, and other systemic infections. The identification of an exopolysaccharide produced by H. somni prompted us to evaluate whether the bacterium was capable of forming a biofilm. After growth in polyvinyl chloride wells a biofilm was formed by all strains examined, although most isolates from systemic sites produced more biofilm than commensal isolates from the prepuce. Biofilms

We investigated deaths in a group of feedlot steers in Argentina. The main findings in 3 steers autopsied were pulmonary congestion and edema, necrotizing myocarditis, pericarditis, suppurative leptomeningitis, and bronchopneumonia. Histophilus somni was detected by bacterial culture and immunohistochemistry in the hearts of the 3 animals. Partial sequences of the 16S rRNA gene of a H. somni isolate had 99% similarity with other H. somni sequences in GenBank. Most reports of H. somni septicemia in cattle originate from North America and western Europe. There is scant information about cardiac

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of a Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) like disease causing large mortalities in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Asia and in Africa have been reported since 1890. Yet the aetiology of this condition remains elusive. This study is the first to apply state of the art molecular methods to shed light on the nasopharyngeal carrier state of Pasteurellaceae in camels. The study focused on HS causing Pasteurella multocida capsular types B and E. Other Pasteurellaceae, implicated in common respiratory infections of animals, were also investigated.
METHODS: In 2007 and 2008, 388 nasop
