Acute cholangitis caused by coinfection with zoonotic pathogens of Gallibacterium anatis and Enterococcus cecorum: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gallibacterium anatis and Enterococcus cecorum are considered to be emerging infectious pathogens in poultry, particularly in the European Union. These bacteria are isolated on rare occasions from immunocompromised hosts and cause opportunistic infections associated with the ingestion of contaminated food. Here, we report the first case of G. anatis and E. cecorum coinfection in an immunocompetent host and clarify the genomic characteristics of these bacteria. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old Japanese man diagnosed with acute cholangitis as a result of a common bile duct stone was

Co-infection with Bovine Herpesvirus 4 and Histophilus somni Significantly Extends the Service Period in Dairy Cattle with Purulent Vaginal Discharge.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Bovine Herpesvirus 4 (BoHV-4) and Histophilus (H.) somni on fertility rate of cows in a Hungarian Holstein-Friesian dairy herd with purulent vaginal discharge (PVD). Non-pregnant cows (n = 188) with mature corpus luteum were treated with cloprostenol and 3 days later if they did not show oestrus, were examined by rectal palpation. Animals showing PVD (n = 60/31.9%/) and 14 controls with normal vaginal discharge (Score 0) were randomly selected and further examined by ultrasonography and blood samples were collected for detecting BoHV-4 DNA

Histophilus somni myocarditis and leptomeningitis in feedlot cattle: case report and occurrence in South America.

We investigated deaths in a group of feedlot steers in Argentina. The main findings in 3 steers autopsied were pulmonary congestion and edema, necrotizing myocarditis, pericarditis, suppurative leptomeningitis, and bronchopneumonia. Histophilus somni was detected by bacterial culture and immunohistochemistry in the hearts of the 3 animals. Partial sequences of the 16S rRNA gene of a H. somni isolate had 99% similarity with other H. somni sequences in GenBank. Most reports of H. somni septicemia in cattle originate from North America and western Europe. There is scant information about cardiac

Distinct host-pathogen and microbiome responses of aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) and bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) following exposure to Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae with or without co-exposure to leukotoxigenic Pasteurellaceae.

BACKGROUND: Pathogens can shape their host communities over various timescales. The potential role of host–pathogen co-evolution in driving contemporary shifts in disease ecology is becoming increasingly important as host species emerge and persist outside their native ranges. In North America, Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae can cause fatal pneumonia epizootics in native bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), whereas introduced free-ranging sympatric aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) typically act as asymptomatic reservoirs. We describe the responses of two hosts with different biogeographical histories to share

Subdural empyema caused by Aggregatibacter segnis: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Aggregatibacter species are Gram-negative bacteria typically recognized as oral saprophytes in humans, with invasive infections uncommon in immunocompetent individuals. To the best our knowledge, this is the first reported case of subdural empyema attributed to Aggregatibacter segnis (A. segnis). CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female was transferred to our hospital from a local facility due to headache, fever, and left-sided limb numbness. Initially suspected of subdural hematoma and viral encephalitis, she did not respond well to prior treatment. Cerebral computed tomography an

Seasonal incidence and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Pasteurellaceae isolated from American bison (Bison bison).

Ninety pharyngeal tonsils were collected from 2-year-old American bison (Bison bison) bulls and sampled for members of the Pasteurellaceae family. Particular attention was paid to seasonal incidence and antimicrobial resistance in serotypes and biovariants. Multiple strains of Pasteurella haemolytica (39%), P. trehalosi (68%), P. multocida (34%) and Haemophilus somnus (13%) were cultured from 86 out of the 90 (96%) tonsil samples. Pasteurella trehalosi was the most common and evenly distributed of the organisms recovered. Pasteurella haemolytica was found in fewer numbers than P. trehalosi, bu

Avian pasteurellosis: Taxonomy of the organisms involved and aspects of pathogenesis.

The taxonomy of the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 appears to be as complex as that of Enterobacteriaceae. 16S rRNA sequencing indicates that the family should be divided into more than 20 genera. According to phylogenetic investigations, the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto includes three subclusters, two of which represent taxa mainly associated with avian hosts. True species of the genera Actinobacillus and Haemophilus have not been reported from birds. Several new taxa, which have been shown to belong to the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 have been reported from birds. Some of these see

A 5-year retrospective report of Gallibacterium anatis and Pasteurella multocida isolates from chickens in Mississippi.

A 5-yr retrospective study (November 2006-December 2011) was conducted to determine the isolation frequency of Pasteurella multocida and Gallibacterium anatis and their antibiograms from chickens submitted to the Mississippi Poultry Research and Diagnostic Laboratory. The number of isolations of G. anatis increased over the last 5 yr in broiler and broiler breeder type chickens. For P. multocida, the number of isolations increased from 2006 to 2010, but decreased through 2011 with all isolations being from boiler breeder type chickens. Gallibacterium anatis demonstrated almost complete resista

Occurrence of Pasteurellaceae and Neisseriaceae bacteria in the pharyngeal and respiratory tract of dogs and cats - Short communication.

The occurrence of members of the Pasteurellaceae and Neisseriaceae families was studied in dogs and cats. A total of 110 nasal and pharyngeal swab samples from 47 dogs and 8 cats were collected. Most of the strains were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, except Frederiksenia canicola and Pasteurella multocida where species-specific polymerase chain reactions were applied. The most frequently isolated species was F. canicola, which occurred only in dogs, mainly in the pharyngeal cavity. The second commonest bacterium, P. multocida was found in both types of samples and in both hosts. Other spec

Effect of Histophilus somni on Heart and Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells.

Histophilus somni is a pathogenic gram-negative bacterium responsible for pneumonia and septicemia in cattle. Sequelae include infectious thrombotic meningoencephalitis (ITME), myocarditis, arthritis, and abortion. These syndromes are associated with widespread vasculitis and thrombosis, implicating a role for endothelium in pathogenesis. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical investigation of 10 natural cases of bovine H. somni myocarditis and 1 case of ITME revealed intravascular H. somni in large biofilm-like aggregates adherent to the luminal surface of microvascular endothelium. Pathogenesis of Gallibacterium anatis in a natural infection model fulfils Koch's postulates: 2. Epididymitis and decreased semen quality are the predominant effects in specific pathogen free cockerels.

Pathogenesis of Gallibacterium anatis was investigated in specific pathogen free cockerels. Birds aged 35 weeks were infected intranasally with G. anatis whereas negative controls were left uninfected. Following infection, necropsy, bacteriological and histopathological investigations were performed in birds killed at 3, 7, 10, 28 and 38 days post infection (d.p.i.). Additionally, semen samples were collected twice a week until 5 weeks post infection for quality assessment. No clinical signs and gross pathological lesions were seen throughout the experiment. Identification of Histophilus somni by a nanomaterial optical fiber biosensor assay.

Histophilus somni is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for respiratory and systemic diseases of cattle and sheep. Rapid and accurate detection of H. somni is essential to distinguish H. somni from other potential pathogens for proper control and treatment of infections. Nanomaterial optical fiber biosensors (NOFS) recognize analyte interactions, such as DNA hybridization, with high specificity and sensitivity, and were applied to detect H. somni DNA in culture and clinical samples. An ionic self-assembled multilayer (ISAM) film was fabricated on a long-period grating optical fiber, and a b

Phylogenetic and epidemiologic relationships among Pasteurellaceae from Colorado bighorn sheep herds.

We used 16S rRNA sequencing and leukotoxin gene (lktA) screening via PCR assay to clarify phylogenetic and epidemiologic relationships among Pasteurellaceae isolated from bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Only six of 21 bighorn isolates identified as "Mannheimia haemolytica" in original laboratory reports appeared to be isolates of M. haemolytica sensu stricto based on 16S rRNA sequence comparisons; the remainder grouped with M. glucosida (n=8) or M. ruminalis (n=7). Similarly, 16S rRNA sequence comparisons grouped only 16 of 25 trehalose-fermenting bighorn isolates with reference strains of Bi

Basic Characterization of Natural Transformation in Avibacterium paragallinarum.

Avibacterium paragallinarum is the pathogen involved in infectious coryza (IC), an acute infectious upper respiratory disease in chickens. The prevalence of IC has increased in China in recent years. There is a lack of reliable and effective procedures for gene manipulation, which has limited the research on the bacterial genetics and pathogenesis of A. paragallinarum. Natural transformation has been developed as a method of gene manipulation in Pasteurellaceae by the introduction of foreign genes or DNA fragments into bacterial cells, but there has been no report on natural transformation in

CdtC-Induced Processing of Membrane-Bound CdtA Is a Crucial Step in Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans Cytolethal Distending Toxin Holotoxin Formation.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is an oral pathogen causing periodontal disease and bacterial endocarditis. It produces cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) that could damage mammalian cells and tissues. CDT is a tripartite protein toxin composed of CdtA, CdtB, and CdtC. We have previously indicated that CdtA is a lipoprotein and that the proteolytic processing of CdtA is important for biogenesis and secretion of CDT holotoxin. Here, we established an in vitro processing assay of CdtA and investigated the interactions of CdtA with other Cdt subunits. This assay demonstrated that incubation

Nanofibers with Incorporated Autochthonous Bacteria as Potential Probiotics for Local Treatment of Periodontal Disease.

The conventional treatment of periodontal disease does not solve the high incidence of recolonization of periodontal pockets by pathogens. Here, we introduce an innovative concept of incorporating autochthonous bacteria as potential probiotics into nanofibers for local treatment. We selected and isolated the strain 25.2.M from the oral microbiota of healthy volunteers. It was identified as Bacillus sp. based on 16S rRNA sequence analyses. The strain is nonpathogenic, produces antimicrobial substances, and can grow over the periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in vitro, ma

Pasteurella multocida: from zoonosis to cellular microbiology.

In a world where most emerging and reemerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in nature and our contacts with both domestic and wild animals abound, there is growing awareness of the potential for human acquisition of animal diseases. Like other Pasteurellaceae, Pasteurella species are highly prevalent among animal populations, where they are often found as part of the normal microbiota of the oral, nasopharyngeal, and upper respiratory tracts. Many Pasteurella species are opportunistic pathogens that can cause endemic disease and are associated increasingly with epizootic outbreaks. Zoonotic

Antimicrobial resistance patterns and genetic determinants of emerging Gallibacterium anatis isolates from poultry in West Java, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Gallibacteriosis is a disease in poultry caused by the bacterium Gallibacterium anatis that can lead to respiratory disorders or decreased production. This bacterium causes infections that are similar to those caused by other bacteria, which may lead to misdiagnosis. Infections caused by G. anatis are increasingly associated with reduced susceptibility to antibiotics. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance, antibiogram profile, and antibiotic resistance genes associated with emerging G. anatis infections in poultry. METHODS: Using a targeted sampling metho
