CPE cultural immersion through pairing CPE residents with local religiously diverse families.

This study evaluated a religiously diverse cultural immersion program for clinical pastoral education (CPE) residents at Houston Methodist Hospital System (HM). HM has two cohorts of CPE residents each year, with one at the main hospital and the other at their suburban hospitals. Participants in this qualitative interpretative phenomenological study (IPA) included 20 residents from 2024 and 2025, who were interviewed individually regarding their experiences being paired with a host family from a religion other than their own during their residency. Fifteen themes emerged supporting the concept

Factors associated with institutional delivery practice among women in pastoral community of Dubti district, Afar region, Northeast Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Eighty-five percent of the global burden of maternal mortality was covered by Sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia is a major contributor to the death of mothers with a maternal mortality ratio of 676 per 100,000 live births. Only 10% of deliveries in Ethiopia were at health facility with the least (6.4%) in the Afar region. However, there is limited evidence about factors of institutional delivery in the study area. Thus, this study aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of institutional delivery practice among women in the pastoral community of Dubti district, Northeast Eth

Fostering spiritual resilience and vitality in formerly incarcerated persons of African American descent.

The process of reentry for formerly incarcerated persons can be a burdensome, stigma-laden transition, and any difficult transition requires resilience. African Americans-the group most impacted by incarceration trauma-commonly depend on faith leaders in times of crisis to provide meaning, encouragement, and guidance, fostering spiritual resilience. This study conceptualizes spiritual resilience and proposes it as a vital quality for successful reentry; giving credence to the significant role clergy and pastoral clinicians play in mediating restorative reintegration.

Early newborn bathing and associated factors among mothers in Afar Region, Northeast Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Delaying newborn bathing for 24 h after childbirth protects the baby from hypothermia, infection and hypoglycaemia and provides an opportunity for mother-baby emotional bonding. However, no previously published study has investigated the early newborn bathing practices of pastoral mothers in Ethiopia. This study aims to investigate early newborn bathing and associated factors among mothers in Afar Region, Northeast Ethiopia. METHODS: Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May to June 2021. A systematic random sampling technique was used to recruit 386 mothers,

Homelessness.

The author, acknowledging the reality of homeless persons in most communities, explores the meanings and dynamics of homelessness, and the need to recognize the variety of participants needing to be recognized in appreciating the complexity of this segment of society. He raises the issue of how pastoral caregivers become involved in providing authentic care to this sub-culture and offers examples from his own experiences as a volunteer chaplain in the Salvation Army Corps.

Transcending the physical: spiritual aspects of pain in patients with HIV and/or cancer.

Spirituality is an important though often neglected aspect of pain in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and/or cancer, for both patients and nurses. The spiritual domain involves: (1) meaning, (2) hope and (3) love and relatedness. The author examines spiritual aspects of pain in persons with HIV and/or cancer, as supported by the literature. Understanding spiritual aspects of pain carries implications for nursing. One of these implications is that it is important for the nurse to be closer to his/her own spirit in order to be there for the patient in pain. Other nursing implica

Goals and outcomes of chaplaincy in varying outpatient, primary, and community care contexts.

Several studies have examined the goals and outcomes of chaplaincy within institutional settings. Our study contributes to the literature by examining whether chaplaincy goals and outcomes are specific to different outpatient, primary, and community care contexts. We conducted a round of 9 and one of 8 focus groups, with clients, chaplains, and other professionals from five contexts: the Dutch earthquake zone, general healthcare, pediatric palliative care, care for the unhoused, and veteran care. Using an explorative, descriptive and quantitative design, 77 goals and 59 outcomes are compared a

The University Chaplain: An Often Unrecognised Resource in Suicide Prevention-Initial Qualitative Results from Exploratory Research into the Roles of University Chaplains at One Australian University.

University chaplains are often unrecognised as resources in suicide prevention. This exploratory article highlights the valuable contributions university chaplains at one Australian university make to suicide prevention. Three overarching themes related to the contributions of university chaplains to suicide prevention were generated: (1) person-centred care; (2) the role of university chaplains in suicide prevention; and (3) professional development. Of particular note is that university chaplains actively contribute to all three phases of the suicide prevention framework: prevention, interve

Ministry to Transgender Teenagers (Part One): Pursuing Awareness and Understanding about Trans Youth.

Several significant aspects are addressed in this article to gain clarity and to pursue awareness regarding transgender teenagers. It begins by offering a brief introduction and then moves towards a common understanding of the language and landscape surrounding transgender teenagers. Next the paper centers on maligned, marginalized, and misunderstood transgender teenagers and the experiences they encounter. Hopefully, the information gleaned in this article will empower pastoral care givers to minister directly to this particular underserved sexual minority group.

The wounded healer.

This paper deals with the emergence, elaboration, and use of the concept of "the wounded healer." The term refers to a person whose personal experience of illness and/or trauma has left lingering effects on him--in the form of lessons learned that later served him in ministering to other sufferers, or in the form of symptoms or characteristics that usefully influenced his therapeutic endeavors. While such persons and their actions have been noted across the ages, in other cultures, and in many contexts, it was not until the early twentieth century that the patterns in the behaviors of such per

Effect of Dala-Led Behavior Change Communication on Complementary Feeding Practices in Infants and Young Children: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial in Agro-Pastoral Settings of Afar Region, Ethiopia.

Suboptimal complementary feeding remains a major public health concern in Ethiopia, particularly among pastoralist and agro-pastoral communities where mobile livelihoods hinder access to conventional health services. In these settings, numerous studies have highlighted the potential of leveraging culturally embedded leadership structures to enhance health promotion efforts. This study examined whether engaging traditional Dala leaders as agents of Nutrition Behavior Change Communication (DALA-BCC) could improve complementary feeding indicators among infants and young children in the agro-pasto

Farewell to a fallen warrior.

In the Summer of 1999, Kemp Burleson had what he thought was going to be a rather routine annual physical exam. By his own estimate, at 37-years-old he was in perfect health. There was no warning of what was to come. At his wife's insistence, he asked for a blood test to determine if his cholesterol was elevated, as there was a family history of heart disease. Within days, the results were in. They were not good. It was not a cholesterol problem. He had leukemia and would need a bone marrow transplant to increase his odds for survival. In spite of the attempts to extend his life, he lived only

Helping persons with AIDS find meaning and hope.

In helping persons with AIDS recognize and understand their spiritual needs, it is beneficial to distinguish between spirituality and organized religion. Spirituality is concerned with meaning, hope, self-identity and self-worth, and forgiveness and reconciliation and is determined by the way persons structure their relationships with God, the world, others, and themselves. Organized religion is concerned with the human experience of the holy. It embodies this experience in a particular creed, cult, and community and is meant to serve the spirituality of its members. From a psychosocial standp

Facility readiness and experience of women and health care providers in receiving and delivering obstetric care in comprehensive health posts in Ethiopia: a mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a critical public health issue in Ethiopia, with only half of births occurring in health facilities. To address this, the Health Extension Program (HEP) introduced comprehensive health posts (CHPs) to improve maternal and newborn health services in underserved areas. The CHPs are expected to provide essential health services to communities who live in villages that have limited access to a health center or Primary Hospital (more than one-hour walking distance). This study assessed the readiness of CHPs to deliver obstetric care and explored the experience

Violence at Churches in the USA: Pastoral Leadership, Theological Coping, and the Psychosocial Governance of Physical Security.

Deadly violence at US churches raises urgent public health and psychological questions about how religious leaders govern protective capacity in "soft target" environments. The trauma of these events fractures communal well-being and introduces profound psychosocial burdens to pastoral leaders navigating the tension between spiritual sanctuary and physical vulnerability. We surveyed 255 Protestant senior pastors (Baptist, Methodist, Non-denominational) across three US regions (yielding a 3.74% response rate) using the Servant Leadership Profile-Revised and Defensive Theology Scale to assess th

To Serve is to Die: A Touching Doctors' Legacy.

This paper is a reflection on the role of doctors in everyone's life. It is anchored and inspired from three Filipino doctors who serve as frontliners and died during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through sacrifice and service, they provide unconditional care up to the point of risking and losing their lives. They deserve trust and cooperation from their patients to execute an effective treatment and care management.

Pastoral Narrative Disclosure: The Development and Evaluation of an Australian Chaplaincy Intervention Strategy for Addressing Moral Injury.

This paper describes the development and initial chaplaincy user evaluation of 'Pastoral Narrative Disclosure' (PND) as a rehabilitation strategy developed for chaplains to address moral injury among veterans. PND is an empirically informed and integrated intervention comprising eight stages of pastoral counselling, guidance and education that was developed by combining two previously existing therapeutic techniques, namely Litz et al's (2017) 'Adaptive Disclosure' and 'Confessional Practice' (Joob & Kettunen, 2013). The development and results of PND can be categorized into five phases. Phase
