Paternal determinants of early embryo development.

Existing research has primarily focused on investigating the impacts of the maternal environment, female fertility phenotype, and genetics on pregnancy loss in dairy cattle. Recently, attention has been directed toward understanding the role the sire has on embryo quality and viability. Studies have shown there is a paternal influence on early pregnancy loss, but the specific mechanisms impacting pregnancy establishment and maintenance remain unclear. Despite clear differences that sires have on pregnancy outcomes, there is a lack of evidence regarding specifically how sires influence pregnanc

Maternal and paternal birthplace and risk of stillbirth.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of maternal and paternal country of origin on stillbirth risk. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of all deliveries in Ontario between 2002 and 2011. We included 1373 stillbirths and 1 166 097 live births that had a documented country of origin for both parents. All newborns were singleton, born at between 20 and 42 weeks' gestation, and weighed 250 g to 7000 g. We computed adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals for the risk of stillbirth associated with parental country of origin. Models were adjusted for infant sex

Sad dads: paternal postpartum depression.

The postpartum period is associated with many adjustments to fathers that pose risks for depression. Estimates of the prevalence of paternal postpartum depression (PPD) in the first two months postpartum vary in the postpartum period from 4 to 25 percent. Paternal PPD has high comorbidity with maternal PPD and might also be associated with other postpartum psychiatric disorders. Studies so far have only used diagnostic criteria for maternal PPD to investigate paternal PPD, so there is an urgent need to study the validity of these scales for men and develop accurate diagnostic tools for paterna

Consequences of paternal cocaine exposure in mice.

The present study examined the potential neuroteratological effects of paternal cocaine (COC) exposure using the novel mouse model of inhalational drug administration. In this model, mice were trained to self-administer COC in multi-hour daily inhalation sessions reminiscent of crack binges. The controls included males pair-fed with COC-inhaling animals as well as ad-lib-fed males. All males were bred with drug-naive females. The newborn pups sired by COC-inhaling males had a reduced biparietal head diameter, suggesting a decreased cerebral volume. When the pups reached adulthood, their sustai

[Klinefelter's syndrome as cause for excluding paternity].

Authors as legal experts by chromosomal study and testis biopsy revealed the presence of Klinefelter's syndrome. On the base of these findings the paternity of the man in question was excluded. Authors stress the importance of the studies of chromosomes in the forensic medical practice.

Influence of paternal age on perinatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing trend to delay childbearing to advanced parental age. Increased risks of advanced maternal age and assisted reproductive technologies are widely accepted. There are limited data regarding advanced paternal age. To adequately counsel patients on risk, more research regarding advanced paternal age is necessary. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the influence of paternal age on perinatal outcomes, and to assess whether this influence differs between pregnancies achieved spontaneously and those achieved with assisted reproductive technology. STUDY DESIGN: A pop

Paternity calculations in a di-spermy case.

In a criminal paternity case, which involved analysis of the product of conception, a rare circumstance was observed. The product of conception was triploidy, apparently due to an egg fertilized by two sperm. Since there is little guidance on how to calculate the probability of the DNA evidence given some basic hypotheses, the formulae were derived and are presented herein. These approaches could provide guidance for similar situations if they arise.

Change in paternity and recurrence of hyperemesis gravidarum.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether change in paternity changes recurrence risk of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). STUDY DESIGN: Survey data on recurrence of HG was compared between cases who had a paternity change between pregnancies and cases who did not. RESULTS: The percentage of HG pregnancies in women with the same partner for all pregnancies was not significantly different from the percentage of HG pregnancies in women who changed partners for at least one pregnancy (78% vs 71%, p > 0.05). Participants who did and did not change partners between their first and second pregnancies, were asked

Paternal age and common mental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence in the literature that there are associations between advancing paternal age and psychosis or more specifically schizophrenia, but not enough to support a strong link between advancing paternal age and common mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explain the association between paternal age at birth and common mental disorders in progeny during their adulthood. METHODOLOGY: This is a sub-study from a larger survey which was planned to study the epidemiology of mental disorders in Malaysia. Respondents who could remember the age of parents at birth we

Maternal and paternal influences on length of pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Biological evidence suggests that both mother and fetus are involved in triggering a normal delivery. A tendency of a child to have a gestational age at birth similar to the father's could represent the effect of genes passed from the father to the fetus. Similar tendencies between mother and child could represent maternal genes passed to the fetus, as well as genes to the mother received from the grandmother that affect a woman's capacity to carry a pregnancy. METHODS: The Medical Birth Registry of Norway contains data on all births in Norway from 1967 onward. We identified 77,452

Paternal contribution to fetal alcohol syndrome.

Maternal alcohol use during pregnancy is associated with a wide range of adverse outcomes for the child. Many women who drink during pregnancy also have male partners who abuse alcohol. Existing data on paternal effects of alcohol abuse during the preconceptual period and at the time of conception are reviewed. Epidemiological data offer some support for a paternal influence on birth weight, congenital heart defects, and some evidence of mild cognitive impairments. Animal data have demonstrated decreased litter size, increased prevalence of low birth weight fetuses and mixed data on risk of ma

Paternal involvement after perinatal death.

This study describes paternal involvement after perinatal death in a large, mostly minority, lower socioeconomic status sample. Paternal presence at birth, holding the baby, and presence at a follow-up appointment were the indicators of paternal involvement. Perinatal death was defined as miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death within 12 hours of birth. Data were collected from a retrospective chart review under the auspices of the Perinatal Mortality Counseling Program at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, a tertiary care referral center in north central Florida. The sample incl

Hirschsprung disease: paternal transmission to a son.

Hirschsprung disease (HD) is genetically heterogeneous with approximately 4% familial occurrence. The recurrence risk is higher in patients with severe involvement. We describe the transmission of histotopochemically proven HD from a father with long aganglionic segment disease to a son with ultrashort segment disease. This observation suggests that the length of involvement in HD is related to the variable expression of the gene defect. It also suggests autosomal dominant inheritance of HD.

Paternal occupation and congenital anomalies in offspring.

This paper presents the results of an exploratory case-control study of paternal occupation as a risk factor for birth defects in offspring. With the use of a population-based registry in British Columbia, 14,415 liveborn children with birth defects were identified for the period, 1952-1973. Two controls were matched to each case by using the birth files of British Columbia. Paternal occupation was obtained from the birth certificate. The analysis included 20 birth defect categories. Paternal occupations found to be associated with an increased odds ratio (OR) of birth defects include janitors
