OBJECTIVE: The impact of disease on women's health-related quality of life has become increasingly important in patients with rheumatic diseases (RDs). Systemic sclerosis (SSc) mostly affects women with a broad spectrum of clinical presentations and severity, and a variable impact on daily living. The objective of the present study was to specifically address "women's health" in systemic sclerosis patients through a dedicated questionnaire.
METHODS: An anonymous self-reported questionnaire (only in Italian) was developed in collaboration with obstetricians and gynecologists and subsequently r

OBJECTIVE: Somatization, anxiety, and depression are 3 highly comorbid conditions. Although validated scales exist for each SAD triad component, a composite measure could have complementary clinical and research utility. We examine validity of the Patient Health Questionnaire Somatic-Anxiety-Depression (PHQ-SAD) scale.
METHODS: Baseline data from 4 clinical trials (2 in primary care, 1 in oncology, and 1 in the emergency department) totaling 1324 patients were analyzed. The PHQ-SAD comprises 25 items including the PHQ-8 for depression, the GAD-7 for anxiety, and 10 items from the PHQ-15 for s

INTRODUCTION: Common symptoms for children with Anderson-Fabry Disease (FD) such as acroparaesthesia and gastrointestinal manifestations can only be objectively assessed in patients using a valid instrument. To date, no such instrument exists.
METHODS: A preliminary 40-item measure of symptoms and experience with FD, the Fabry-specific Paediatric Health and Pain Questionnaire (FPHPQ) was developed, but lacked a formal assessment of its measurement properties. The FPHPQ was used in the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS), a registry for all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of FD who are receiving ag

BACKGROUND: Recently published studies analyzing sensitivity and specificity scores have demonstrated that the brief version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ [J. Am. Med. Assoc. 282 (1999) 1734]) is a useful tool for the detection of panic disorder and depression.
METHODS: We aimed to get normative data for the brief PHQ in a representative population-based sample. Sociodemographic data and PHQ data from 2066 subjects were included.
RESULTS: Base rates for PHQ criteria of major depression were 3.8% with the typical 1:2 ratio between males and females (frequency of minor depressive fo

A patient history generally provides the most important information in diagnosis and management of patients with most rheumatic diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA). Patient history components can be expressed as quantitative, structured, "scientific" data, rather than "subjective" narrative descriptions, using patient self-report questionnaires. The Western Ontario McMaster (WOMAC) questionnaire is used in all OA clinical trials, and the health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) in all rheumatoid arthritis (RA) clinical trials, as "disease-specific" questionnaires. However, both questionnaires

The presentation of depression symptoms in concussed youth athletes is not well understood. We examined the PHQ-A factor structure in concussed youth athletes. Five hundred and ninety-five youth athletes completed the PHQ-A and PCSS within 30 days of sport-related concussion. Factor analyses of the PHQ-A alone revealed a two-factor structure: cognitive-energy/sleep and emotional symptoms. When combined, only two PCSS items ("sadness," "more emotional") overlapped with PHQ-A symptoms. Over half (51.1%) of youth athletes endorsed symptoms consistent with mild-to-severe depression; athletes with
