The analysis of risk factors associated with readmission in patients with exacerbation of COPD.

This study aims to evaluate risk factors for readmission within 6 months after acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to develop a multifactorial predictive model. A total of 151 patients with acute exacerbation of COPD, admitted to our hospital from October 2021 to December 2023, were included in this retrospective analysis. Data on baseline characteristics, medical history, lung function, lifestyle, comorbidities, inflammatory markers, and treatment adherence were obtained from electronic medical records to identify risk factors associated with readmission. Predictors for early and long-term readmission in involuntarily admitted patients.

BACKGROUND: It is a common aim to reduce psychiatric readmissions. Although risk factors for readmissions were described, specific data in the group of patients with potentially aversively experienced involuntary admissions are lacking. To better understand underlying mechanisms, it is important to identify factors that are linked to readmissions in this specific patient group, which is the purpose of the current paper. METHODS: A four-year cohort of N = 3575 involuntary admissions (IA) was followed-up for subsequent re-hospitalization. Demographic, administrative and clinical factors associa

Readmission into intensive care unit in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a devastating cerebrovascular event; patients are routinely admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for initial management. Because complications may be delayed, unplanned ICU readmissions can occur. Therefore, in this study we evaluate the rate of and factors associated with readmission after aSAH and identify if readmission is associated with poor clinical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients receiving surgical or endovascular treatment for aSAH and admitted to the ICU between January 200

Thirty-day unplanned readmission in hospitalised asthma patients in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital quality improvement and hospital performance are commonly evaluated using parameters such as average length of stay (LOS), patient safety measures and rates of hospital readmission. Thirty-day readmission (30-DR) rates are widely used as a quality indicator and a quantifiable metric for hospitals since patients are often readmitted for the exacerbation of conditions from index admission. The quality of patient education and postdischarge care can influence readmission rates. We report the 30-DR rates of patients with asthma using a national dataset for the year 2013. OB

Thirty-Day Readmission Among Patients with Alcoholic Acute Pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alcoholic acute pancreatitis (AAP) comprises the second most common cause of acute pancreatitis in the USA, and there is lack of data regarding 30-day specific readmission causes and predictors. We aim to identify 30-day readmission rate, causes, and predictors of readmission. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the 2016 National Readmission Database of adult patients readmitted within 30 days after an index admission for AAP. RESULTS: Totally, 76,609 AAP patients were discharged from the hospital in 2016. The 30-day readmission rate was 12%. The main cause of readmissi

Prediction of 7-Day Readmission Risk for Pediatric Trauma Patients.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients admitted for trauma may have unique risk factors of unplanned readmission and require condition-specific models to maximize accuracy of prediction. We used a multicenter data set on trauma admissions to study risk factors and predict unplanned 7-day readmissions with comparison to the 30-day metric. METHODS: Data from 28 hospitals in the United States consisting of 82,532 patients (95,158 encounters) were retrieved, and 75% of the data were used for building a random intercept, mixed-effects regression model, whereas the remaining were used for evaluating model

Avoidable 30-day readmissions in patients undergoing vascular surgery.

BACKGROUND: Vascular surgery has one of the highest unplanned 30-day readmission rates of all surgical specialties. The degree to which these may be avoidable and the optimal strategies to reduce their occurrence are unknown. The aim of this study was to identify and classify avoidable 30-day readmissions in patients undergoing vascular surgery in order to plan targeted interventions to reduce their occurrence, improve outcomes and reduce cost. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of discharges over a 12-month period from a single tertiary vascular unit was performed. A multidisciplinary panel c

Temporal variability of readmission determinants in postoperative vascular surgery patients.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical information continues to be limited regarding changes in the temporal risk profile for readmissions during the initial postoperative year in vascular surgery patients. We set out to describe the associations between demographics, clinical outcomes, comorbidity indices, and hospital readmissions in a sample of patients undergoing common extremity revascularization or dialysis access (ERDA) procedures. We hypothesized that factors independently associated with readmission will evolve from "short-term" to "long-term" determinants at 30-, 180-, and 360-day postoperative cuto

Reducing hospital readmissions in patients with end-stage kidney disease.

ESKD patients have a large burden of disease, with high rates of readmission to hospital compared with the general population. A readmission after an acute index hospital discharge is either planned or unplanned. A proportion of unplanned readmissions are potentially avoidable, and could have been prevented with optimized transitional care. Readmissions pose financial cost to the health care system and emotional cost to patients and caregivers. In other chronic diseases with high readmission risk, such as congestive heart failure, interventions have improved transitional care and reduced readm

Risk factors for hospital readmissions in elderly patients: a systematic review.

Population ageing is associated with an increase in hospital admissions. Defining the factors that affect the risk of hospital readmission could identify individuals at high risk and enable targeted interventions to be designed. This aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for hospital readmission in elderly people. A systematic review of the literature published in English or Spanish was performed by electronically searching EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, SCI and SSCI. Some keywords were aged, elder, readmission, risk, etc. Selection criteria were: prospective cohort studies with suitabl

Relevance of readmission of elderly patients discharged from a geriatric unit.

Eight percent of the elderly patients discharged from a geriatric unit in one year were readmitted within three months. Forty-six percent had been living alone and nearly all of these had received full community support at the time of discharge. Recurrent problems were the reason for readmission in 59% of cases, mainly due to falls, incontinence, and confusion. Only 54% of the readmitted patients were discharged home again--those with new additional problems tended to die in hospital, whereas those with recurrent problems often required institutional long-term care. It is concluded that even w
