West Nile Virus (WNV) infection manifests itself clinically a nd pathologically differently in various species of birds. The clinicopathologic findings and WNV antigen tissue distribution of six great gray owls (Strix nebulosa) and two barred owls (Strix varia) with WNV infection are described in this report. Great gray owls usually live in northern Canada, whereas the phylogenetically related barred owls are native to the midwestern and eastern United States and southern Canada. Naturally acquired WNV infection caused death essentially without previous signs of disease in the six great gray o

In order to examine to what extent the neuronal and metabolic activities of avascular vertebrate retinae are reflected in the morphology of their Müller cells we have studied (by using several monoclonal antibodies) the morphology of Müller cells in two species of diurnal birds (chicken, Gallus domesticus, and pigeon, Columba livia) and one species of nocturnal saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosi). In all three species, the outer nuclear layer is relatively thin and the Müller cell trunks divide into rootlets that wrap around the photoreceptors. In both diurnal birds studied, the trunks of

1. The effects of different external ionic conditions and of metabolic inhibitors on the membrane potential of hyperpolarizing photoreceptors in the retina of the scallop Pecten irradians were examined in the presence and absence of light.2. Changes in extracellular K(+) have a greater effect on membrane potential in the light than in darkness. The receptor potential is increased in amplitude when [K](o) is reduced and decreased when [K](o) is elevated. It is hyperpolarizing when [K](o) is less than the estimated value for [K](i) and depolarizing when this condition is reversed.3. The complete

A decision-theoretical approach was used to evaluate strategies to rebuild a severely depleted scallop (Pecten novaezelandiae) populations in the Tasman Bay and Golden Bay of New Zealand. These strategies were: no intervention, cessation of seabed bottom contact fishing, and reduction of sediment and nutrient runoff from surrounding land through on-farm practices. Our approach combined outputs of estimated effects of on-farm practices on erosion and nutrient reduction with a stochastic dynamic model of the scallop populations. The most effective individual intervention is eliminating bottom co

In vivo (31)P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to measure the levels of ATP, phospho-l-arginine (PLA), and inorganic phosphate in the adductor muscle of the Antarctic scallop Adamussium colbecki and two temperate species, Aequipecten opercularis and Pecten maximus. Graded exercise regimes from light (one to two contractions) to exhausting (failing to respond to further stimulation) were imposed on animals of each species at its habitat temperature (0 degrees vs. 12 degrees C, respectively). NMR spectroscopy allowed noninvasive measurement of metabolite levels and intracel

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are natural proliferations of microalgal species, able to produce toxic compounds, such as domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin responsible for the Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) which can be lethal for mammals. Pectinid species are of high economic value and are particularly vulnerable to these events. As filter-feeders, they can accumulate DA and transfer it through the food web. However, DA retention (accumulation and depuration) varies between species, meaning that not all fisheries are equally affected. Therefore, there is a need to better understand species-speci

BACKGROUND: The septum of the penis or the pectiniform septum (from Latina pecten) is a connective structure that separates the two corpora cavernosa of the penis. It is formed through the joining of the circular fibers of the tunica albuginea, which envelops the corpora cavernosa. The septum neither completely separates, nor entirely joins the two corpora cavernosa.
RESULTS: We dissected the penile septum in 10 formalized bodies. The dissections were carried out using magnifying lenses, emphasizing the connective structures. We studied the structure of the septum using transverse and sagitta

Ocular lesions are common in red-tailed hawks with West Nile (WN) disease. These lesions consist of pectenitis, choroidal or retinal inflammation, or retinal necrosis, but detailed investigation of the ocular lesions is lacking. Postmortem examination of the eyes of 16 red-tailed hawks with naturally acquired WN disease and 3 red-tailed hawks without WN disease was performed using histopathology, immunohistochemistry for West Nile virus (WNV) antigen, glial fibrillary acid protein, cleaved caspase-3, and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling method. Retinal

Marek's disease virus (MDV) infection in the eye was studied chronologically after inoculating 1-day-old chickens with a very virulent MDV strain, Md5. The ocular lesions could be classified as early lesions (6-11 days postinoculation [dpi]) and late lesions (26 and 56 dpi), based upon the location and severity of the lesions. The early lesions involved iris, ciliary body, and choroid layer, and were characterized by endothelial cell hypertrophy, vasculitis, and infiltration of lymphocytes (mainly CD8+), plasma cells, macrophages, and heterophils. Expression of early MDV-antigen pp38 in the ce

This study examines the morphology of sporadic congenital microphthalmia in 1-day-old chicks, with particular emphasis on the neural retina. On the basis of the size of the eyeball it is possible to classify microphthalmia into two groups, severe and mild. In severe microphthalmia (less than 5 mm in equatorial diameter), the eyeball is severely malformed, but in most cases it shows evidence of an organized neural retina. Although ganglion cells and an optic nerve head are present in a small proportion of these retinae, we could not trace an optic nerve projection to the brain. These results in

Usutu virus (USUV) is a zoonotic neurotropic arbovirus related to the West Nile virus that causes mortality in birds and sporadic neurologic human disease. Current research on natural USUV-associated disease lacks data on ocular involvement. This study investigated ocular and periocular tissue involvement in natural USUV infections and associated disease in Eurasian blackbirds (Turdus merula). Twenty-two found-dead Eurasian blackbirds were examined. USUV reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) detected 12/22 infected blackbirds. Histology and immunohistochemistry

A wild young adult western screech owl (Megascops kennicottii) of unknown sex was presented for evaluation of an abnormal left eye (OS). Ophthalmic examination OS revealed raised intraocular pressure (37 mm Hg; reference interval 7-16 mm Hg), mydriasis, conjunctival and episcleral hyperemia, shallow anterior chamber due to anterior displacement of the lens and iris, rubeosis iridis, and engorgement of the pecten. The intraocular pressure in the right eye (OD) was 11 mm Hg. Multifocal pale, variably translucent, curvilinear to vermiform opacities were observed in the medial and ventral peripher

Despite the deleterious effects of the phycotoxin domoic acid (DA) on human health, and the permanent threat of blooms of the toxic Pseudo-nitzschia sp. over commercially important fishery-resources, knowledge regarding the physiological mechanisms behind the profound differences in accumulation and depuration of this toxin in contaminated invertebrates remain very scarce. In this work, a comparative analysis of accumulation, isomer content, and subcellular localization of DA in different invertebrate species was performed. Samples of scallops Pecten maximus and Aequipecten opercularis, clams

Fifteen bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and 3 golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) were diagnosed with West Nile disease based on 1) presence of lesions in brain, eyes, and heart, 2) viral antigen detection in brain, eyes, heart, kidney, and/or liver by immunohistochemical staining, 3) detection of viral RNA in tissue samples and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by polymerase chain reaction, and/or 4) detection of West Nile virus (WNV)-specific antibodies in CSF by serum neutralization assay. West Nile virus-associated gross lesions included cerebral pan-necrosis with hydrocephalus ex vacuo (7

The 5AII/HT7 antigen is the avian homologue of a 45-50X103 M r plasma membrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin super-gene family also identified in mammalian species (basigin, mouse gp42, MRC OX-47 antigen, M6 antigen). We had previously demonstrated that antibodies to this antigen interfere with heterotypic cell-to-cell interaction-dependent glial cell maturation in vitro. In this report, we sought to gain insight into its developmental role through an analysis of its distribution at various stages of avian embryogenesis. The primary mode of expression progresses from generalized staining

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) performs two contrasting enzymatic effects: as part of the renin-angiotensin system it converts angiotensin I into physiologically active angiotensin II, and it inactivates a number of peptides, e.g. substance P. These peptides are well known neurotransmitters in the retina and recently angiotensin II was described in retinal neurons. We therefore investigated a possible involvement of ACE in retinal metabolism by determining the mRNA and protein expression of ACE in the developing and mature chicken retina. ACE-mRNA expression was investigated by RT-PCR in

The occurrence of brominated dioxins (PBDD/Fs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was investigated in commonly consumed species of marine shellfish in the UK. Individual samples of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), native oysters (Ostrea edulis), mussels (Mytilus edulis), scallops (Pecten maximus), and cockles (Cerastoderma edule) were collected from different coastal regions between 2006 and 2007. Samples of a particular species from each site were composited and 60 samples were analysed. Polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) occurred more frequently and generally at a higher level

Domoic acid (DA) is a dangerous phycotoxin produced by several strains of diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, and responsible for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) in humans. The increasingly intense ASP-outbreaks along the English Channel over the last three decades have forced persistent harvest closures of economically important and highly contaminated bivalve stocks exhibiting slow DA-depuration rates, like the king scallop Pecten maximus. Under this scenario, other pectinid species, such as the queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis have been empirically proposed as alternative resource
