Differential protein expression of kidney tissue in the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis under acute cadmium stress.

Morphological and proteomic changes in the kidney of scallops exposed to acute cadmium chloride (CdCl₂) were observed, analyzed and compared with those in the non-exposed control group. Under microscopy the paraffin-embedded sections of the kidney revealed that the microstructure of the tissue had been severely deformed after Cd exposure. Two dimensional electrophoresis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and database searches showed 13 differentially expressed protein spots, of which 11 were up-regulated, while two were down-regulated. Among these proteins, guanylate kinase (GK) and C₂H₂-type zinc f

Protective effects of scallop mantle protein peptides on the freeze-thaw stability and antioxidant properties of frozen dough and steamed bread.

In this study, scallop mantle, a by-product of scallop processing, was used as the raw material to prepare scallop mantle protein peptides (SMPP-4, molecular weight < 1 kDa) through enzymatic hydrolysis combined with ultrafiltration. The peptide was characterized for its physicochemical properties, antioxidant and cryoprotective functional properties, and its quality-improving effects on dough and steamed bread subjected to repeated freeze-thaw cycles were systematically explored. Amino-acid composition results showed that SMPP-4 was rich in hydrophobic and aromatic amino acids, with a high pr

Transcriptome analysis of Catarina scallop (Argopecten ventricosus) juveniles treated with highly-diluted immunomodulatory compounds reveals activation of non-self-recognition system.

Marine bivalve hatchery productivity is continuously challenged by apparition and propagation of new diseases, mainly those related to vibriosis. Disinfectants and antibiotics are frequently overused to prevent pathogen presence, generating a potential negative impact on the environment. Recently, the use of highly diluted compounds with immunostimulant properties in marine organisms has been trailed successfully to activate the self-protection mechanisms of marine bivalves. Despite their potential as immunostimulants, little is known about their way of action. To understand their effect, a co

Expression regulation of Fad and Mboat gene families to cold stress in the noble scallop Chlamys nobilis: A comparative analysis across bivalves.

Cold waves exacerbated by global warming and the resultant sharp drops in coastal water temperature pose serious threats to the sustainability of bivalve aquaculture. The fatty acid desaturase (Fad) and membrane-bound O-acyltransferase (Mboat) gene families play essential roles in maintaining membrane lipid homeostasis and facilitating cold adaptation. Although Fad genes have been investigated in several bivalves, the role of Mboat genes in cold stress and how these two families coordinately regulate lipid remodeling under cold stress remain largely unclear. This study performed a comprehensiv

Evolutionary characterization and pathogen-responsive expression of the Annexins in bivalves.

Annexins (ANXs) are a family of Ca2+-dependent phospholipid-binding proteins that participate in membrane dynamics and stress responses; however, their evolutionary patterns and immune functions in bivalves remain poorly understood. In this study, a total of 206 ANX genes were identified from 29 bivalve species. Their physicochemical properties, conserved motifs, gene structures, and phylogenetic relationships were systematically analyzed. The results revealed that the ANX family is highly conserved in bivalves and can be classified into seven major clades (ANX1-ANX7). In the noble scallop Chl

Use of GAL4 factor-based yeast assay to quantify the effects of xenobiotics on RXR homodimer and RXR/PPAR heterodimer in scallop Chlamys farreri.

Retinoid X receptor (RXR) and peroxisome proliferators-activated receptors (PPAR) have been shown as important targets of endocrine disrupting effects caused by organotin compounds (OTCs). In vitro methods for non-model species are instrumental in revealing not only mechanism of toxicity but also basic biology. In the present study, we constructed the GAL4 factor-based recombinant yeast systems of RXRα/RXRα (RR), RXRα/PPARα (RPα) and RXRα/PPARγ (RPγ) of the scallop Chlamys farreri to investigate their transcriptional activity under the induction of OTCs (tributyltin chloride, triphenyltin chlo

Ethanolamine plasmalogens derived from scallops stimulate both follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone secretion by bovine gonadotrophs.

Brain ethanolamine plasmalogens (EPls) are the only known ligands of G-protein-coupled receptor 61, a novel receptor that stimulates follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), but not luteinizing hormone (LH), secretion by bovine gonadotrophs. We hypothesized that the recently developed neuroprotective EPls extracted from scallop (Pecten yessoensis) (scallop EPls) could stimulate FSH secretion by gonadotrophs. To test this hypothesis, bovine gonadotrophs were cultured for 3.5 days and treated with increasing concentrations of scallop EPls. FSH secretion was stimulated by all tested concentrations of

Risks and benefits of compost-like materials prepared by the thermal treatment of raw scallop hepatopancreas for supplying cadmium and the growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.).

Scallop hepatopancreas, fishery waste, contains relatively high levels of Cd and organic nitrogen compounds, the latter of which represent a fertilizer. In this study, raw scallop hepatopancreas tissue was thermally treated with sawdust and red loam in the presence of an iron catalyst to produce compost-like materials (CLMs). Two CLM samples were prepared by varying the content of raw scallop hepatopancreas tissue: 46 wt.% for CLM-1 and 18 wt.% for CLM-2. Mixtures of control soil (CTL) and CLMs (CLM content: 10 and 25 wt.%) were examined for the growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to evalua

Hepatoprotective effect of a hot-water extract from the edible thorny oyster Spondylus varius on carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury in mice.

The edible thorny oyster, Spondylus varius (Mizuiri-shoujou), was found to suppress the carbon tetrachloride-induced increase in serum aspartate and alanine aminotransferase activities in mice. Significant suppressive effects on these enzyme activities were found in the fraction eluted with 75% ethanol from polystyrene gel in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that S. varius exerts a protective effect against liver injury.

Identification of ATG genes in the noble scallop Chlamys nobilis reveals unique expression strategies against low-temperature and Vibrio parahaemolyticus challenge.

Autophagy is a highly conserved cellular degradation pathway in eukaryotes, orchestrated by a suite of autophagy-related (ATG) genes. Beyond their canonical autophagic roles, ATG proteins participate extensively in diverse non-autophagic processes, serving as crucial regulators for cellular homeostasis and normal physiological functions. The noble scallop, Chlamys nobilis, is an economically important mariculture bivalve in southern China, yet its aquaculture industry frequently suffers severe losses due to extremes low temperature events and bacterial diseases. However, the evolutionary chara

Large Fenestrations Versus Scallops for the Superior Mesenteric Artery during Fenestrated Endovascular Aneurysm Repair: Does it Matter?

BACKGROUND: Fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair is an established customized treatment for aortic aneurysms with 3 current commercially available configurations for the superior mesenteric artery (SMA)-a single-wide scallop, large fenestration, or small fenestration, with the scallop or large fenestration most utilized. Outcomes comparing SMA single-wide scallops to large fenestrations with the Zenith fenestrated (ZFEN) device are scarce. As large fenestrations have the benefit of extending the proximal seal zone compared to scalloped configurations, we sought to determine the differences

Transcriptomic analysis revealed the potential regulatory mechanism of extracellular vesicles on the innate immunity in Chlamys farreri.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), as antimicrobial factors, load a variety of immune-related molecules, play a complex and critical role in host-pathogen interactions. The regulatory mechanism of how EVs respond to external stimuli by regulating immune regulatory elements in the innate immune response of marine invertebrates remains unresolved. To address this, we conducted a global transcriptomic analysis of hemocytes in Chlamys farreri stimulated by EVs derived from different sources. Transcriptomic analysis identified 892 specifically upregulated and 246 specifically downregulated genes in the
