Primary repair of complete sternal cleft with pectoralis major muscle flaps.

We report the successful coverage of a complete sternal cleft with exposed pericardium using bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps in a newborn. The patient was transferred to our institution with nearly complete sternal aplasia, rectus diastasis, and only dessicated pericardium covering the visible heart. Complete closure without compromise of cardiac function was achieved at 2 days of age with bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps and fasciocutaneous advancement flaps.

Transfer of upper pectoralis major flap for functional reconstruction of deltoid muscle.

Since January 1984, functional reconstruction of the deltoid muscle using transfer of the upper part of the pectoralis major muscle has been performed in 7 patients with deltoid dysfunction. 5-20 months follow-up (average 11) revealed marked improvement in 6 patients. During the operation, the superior and inferior parts of the pectoralis major muscle were bluntly dissected and sectioned. The upper part of this muscle was turned over and transferred to the site normally occupied by the deltoid muscle. The transposed muscle contributed to both abduction and flexion of the shoulder. The efficacy

The pectoralis muscle orientation as an indicator of the modes of wing-propelled locomotion in birds.

Given the diversification of wingbeat utilisation for body propulsion among birds, it is essential to understand the relationship between skeletal morphology and flapping ability, depending on the wing depression exerted by the pectoralis muscle. The path between the origin and insertion of the pectoralis, which can be identified on the skeletal surface, indicates the orientation of the force it exerts. In this study, line segments were made within the pectoralis to represent the lines of muscle action (LoA). We then compared their overall orientation and distribution among different modes of

Exploring the Correlation between Pulmonary Hypertension and Pectoralis Muscle Area and Density.

HIGHLIGHTS: Markers of sarcopenia showed a weak correlation with the prognosis of PH.Some indices including right atrial pressure and systemic arterial oxygen saturation were considered as predictors of PH prognosis. BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a predictor of mortality in multiple conditions, but the potential prognostic value of sarcopenia indices in pulmonary hypertension (PH) has not been clarified. This study aimed to determine whether there is an association between computed tomography (CT) scan-measured pectoralis muscle area (PMA) and density (PMD) and adverse clinical outcomes in PH pat

Partial agenesis of the pectoralis major and minor muscle: A cadaveric case report.

RATIONALE: The pectoralis major and minor muscles, located in the anterior chest wall, are crucial for upper limb movements. PATIENT CONCERNS: Their nonsyndromic absence is rare but significant for surgical procedures involving the axillary and pectoral regions. DIAGNOSES: Ultrasound can confirm the diagnosis and delimit the extent of the muscular abnormality, detect abnormalities of the costal cartilages, among others. INTERVENTIONS: This descriptive, cadaveric case report involves a formalin-fixed 57-year-old North American male, with no clinical or family history of similar conditions. T

Direct pectoralis major muscle transfer for dynamic stabilization of scapular winging.

Twelve consecutive patients with long thoracic nerve palsy, who underwent transfer of the pectoralis major muscle for dynamic stabilization of the scapula, were reviewed. Direct transfer of the tendon to the lateral margin of the inferior scapular angle was performed with a bony chip from the tendon's insertion. All patients were followed up clinically by evaluation of the Constant score and radiographically with magnetic resonance imaging for an average of 92.5 months (range, 60-136 months). The mean Constant score improved from 41 to 85.4 points. Mean active flexion increased from 89 degrees

Unilateral absence of the trapezius and pectoralis major muscle: a variant of Poland syndrome.

We report a female patient with unilateral absence of the trapezius and pectoralis major muscles without other associated limb abnormalities. We believe that this anomaly belongs to the spectrum of anomalies resulting from disruption of the blood supply in the embryonic subclavian and vertebral arteries, as suggested in Poland syndrome.

Transfer of the pectoralis major muscle for the treatment of irreparable rupture of the subscapularis tendon.

BACKGROUND: The clinical diagnosis of a tear of the subscapularis tendon is difficult, and the resulting delays frequently cause a major time-lapse before repair is attempted. Diagnostic delay often means that surgical repair is no longer possible. In twelve patients who had an irreparable tear of the subscapularis tendon, the superior one-half to two-thirds of the tendon of the pectoralis major muscle was used as a substitute for the subscapularis tendon. In order to adapt the orientation of the transferred muscle to that of the subscapularis, it was routed behind the conjoined tendon of the

Accessory insertions of pectoralis major muscle to the brachial fascia: a case report.

Two accessory fibrous bands arising from the posterior aspect near the lateral border of the pectoralis major muscle were found to attach to the brachial fascia at the posterior arm region. Those bands were in intimate contact with the median nerve, brachial veins and its branches. They were thought to be remnants of the distal origin of the pectoralis major muscle. The impact of those fascial bands in the compression syndromes of the upper extremity and in the surgical operations directed to the fossa axillaris were discussed.

Neurogenic pectoralis minor syndrome in the differential diagnosis of neck pain: A case series with diagnostic ultrasound-guided pectoralis minor muscle block.

RATIONALE: Neurogenic pectoralis minor syndrome (NPMiS) is an underdiagnosed cause of persistent neck, shoulder, and upper extremity pain. It can mimic cervical radiculopathy or other musculoskeletal disorders, often resulting in misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment. This case series presents 5 patients with NPMiS who achieved symptomatic relief through diagnostic ultrasound-guided pectoralis minor muscle (PMiM) block followed by targeted rehabilitation. PATIENT CONCERNS: All patients presented with persistent neck pain often radiating to the scapula or anterior chest wall, along with pares

Prompt Impact of Muscle Energy Technique on Pectoralis Muscle Tightness in Computer Users: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Tightness of the pectoralis minor muscle has been a common characteristic of abnormal posture. Prolonged inappropriate posture while using computers/laptops results in musculoskeletal problems, mainly in the upper limb. This study aims to see how the muscular energy technique affected pectoralis minor tightness in computer users right away. This study included 65 individuals aged 20-40 years following the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Participants received muscle energy technique for the pectoralis minor muscle. Pre- and post-assessment included the evaluation of pectoralis minor length, round

The role of pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi muscles in a biomechanical model of massive rotator cuff tear.

BACKGROUND: Superior migration of the humeral head after massive rotator cuff tear (mRCT) is thought to lead to cuff tear arthropathy. Previous biomechanical studies have demonstrated the ability of the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi (PM/LD) muscles to resist this migration. This study examined the role of PM/LD muscles on glenohumeral joint forces and acromiohumeral contact pressures in a mRCT model. METHODS: Six cadaveric shoulders were tested using a custom shoulder-testing system. Muscle insertions of the rotator cuff, deltoid, and PM/LD were preserved and used for muscle loading.

Rare case of dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the pectoralis major muscle found on screening mammography.

Liposarcoma of the pectoralis major muscle is exceedingly rare, with less than 10 cases reported in the literature. Dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the pectoralis major is rarer still, with only 2 reported cases. It is particularly important to be able to accurately diagnose dedifferentiated liposarcoma, as it has a much poorer prognosis than well-differentiated liposarcoma and requires different treatment regimens. Percutaneous biopsy is shown to not be helpful in identifying dedifferentiation. However, there are imaging clues that the radiologist can use to identify dedifferentiation and gui

[Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle in amateur athletes: a rare injury or often overlooked?].

INTRODUCTION: A rupture of the pectoralis major muscle is a rare injury pattern overall, but it is frequently described in athletes, particularly in weightlifting. The risk of sustaining this type of injury is present especially during the eccentric phase of muscle loading. An association between such injuries and the abuse of anabolic steroids is described in the literature, but there is no coherent evidence to support this. We report the case of a young patient with a normal habitus who suffered a humeral rupture of the pectoralis major muscle during recreational sports. There was no history

Suture Anchor Repair of Pectoralis Major Muscle Dehiscence After Modified Ravitch.

During repair of pectus excavatum by the modified Ravitch procedure, the major pectoral muscles are detached from their sternal insertion to obtain adequate surgical exposure. Following repair, the muscles are approximated in midline and reinserted through scarring. Dehiscence of the major pectoral muscles after the modified Ravitch procedure is a rare phenomenon, not previously reported in literature. We report on 2 cases and describe an effective treatment method using sternal suture anchors with good long-term results.

Pectoralis major muscle abscess in an immunocompromised adult: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Primary chest wall abscess is considered a rare disease. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old man presented with swelling of the pectoral muscle in the left side of his chest. Needle aspiration revealed pus. Computed tomography discovered fluid build-up anterior to the left pectoralis major muscle extending up to the left shoulder. There were multiple air pockets within the pectoralis major muscle and the surrounding fat stranding. Following antibiotic administration, we performed surgical debridement and irrigated the affected region. During surgery, the pectoralis major muscle
