On-road measures of pedestrians' estimates of their own nighttime conspicuity.

PROBLEM: Most pedestrian fatalities occur at night. Although researchers have long understood that drivers have difficulty seeing pedestrians at night and that reflective clothing can dramatically enhance pedestrian conspicuity, the extent to which pedestrians understand these facts is unclear. This experiment quantified pedestrians' estimates of the ability of an approaching driver to recognize the presence of roadside pedestrians. METHOD: Ten younger and 10 older participants walked in place on the far shoulder of a closed-road circuit and pressed a button when they were confident that the

Age, sex, and blood alcohol concentration of killed and injured pedestrians.

The relationships between age, sex, and blood alcohol concentration were examined among all adult pedestrians fatally injured in South Australia from 1981 to 1992 inclusive and among all adult pedestrians admitted to a Level 1 trauma center from August 1985 to July 1987. Among the 400 fatalities and 217 admissions, respectively, 68% and 60% were male, 35% and 21% were over 65 years of age, and 38% and 29% had a BAC of .10 or above. Three distinct high-risk groups of adult pedestrians were identified: elderly sober pedestrians, young and middle-aged intoxicated males, and male and female teenag

Modeling pedestrian injury severity in pedestrian-vehicle crashes considering different land use patterns: Mixed logit approach.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to identify and compare the contributing factors to pedestrian injury severity in pedestrian-vehicle crashes considering different land use patterns. METHODS: The pedestrian-vehicle crash data from 2007 to 2018 were collected from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). A total number of 15,807 observations with 72 categorical variables were included in the final dataset. Two mixed logit models were developed to analyze the crash dataset with segmentations of two dominant land use areas (i.e., residential and commercial). Fixed and ra

Understanding complex traffic road scenes: The case of child-pedestrians' hazard perception.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the shortcomings of child-pedestrians in evaluating traffic situations may contribute to producing intervention techniques that may increase their awareness to potential hazards as well as inform and inspire designers of autonomous vehicle and infrastructure systems to deal with the complications of crossing pedestrians. METHOD: The present work examined pedestrians' hazard-perception (HP) skills in complex traffic scenes. Two experiments explored how pedestrians' HP abilities vary with age and experience. In the first, adults and youngsters (7-13-year-olds) were p

Diversity of "Pedestrians on Wheels", New Challenges for Cities in 21st Century.

Traditionally, pedestrians were identified as singular entities with standard needs. Reality shows us that pedestrian diversity is a reality that is becoming increasingly complex. How does urban design face the changing reality of pedestrian typologies? In the same way that in the 20th century the car set aside horse carriages and pedestrians, in the 21st century pedestrians are returning to take centre stage with regard to motor vehicles, but with new formalizations that imply new considerations in the design of streets, many of they are still unsolved. Citizens strolling on scooters, skates,

Traffic signal phasing at intersections to improve safety for alcohol-affected pedestrians.

Alcohol-affected pedestrians are among the highest-risk groups involved in pedestrian casualty crashes. This paper investigates the opportunities to use a modified form of traffic signal operation during high-risk periods and at high-risk locations to reduce alcohol-affected pedestrian crashes and the severity of injuries that might otherwise occur. The 'Dwell-on-Red' treatment involves displaying a red traffic signal to all vehicle directions during periods when no vehicular traffic is detected, so that drivers approach high-risk intersections at a lower speed than if a green signal were disp

An evaluation of driver comprehension of the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon.

INTRODUCTION: The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) has become increasingly common since it was first implemented in 2015 at midblock pedestrian crossings in Massachusetts. The tri-signal head design includes signal sections displaying two red indications above a single yellow indication. PHBs are used as a method of increasing the safety of vulnerable road users by stopping vehicles at high-traffic and high-speed midblock crosswalks. This study was developed to evaluate both driver behavior and comprehension related to the use of PHBs in Massachusetts. METHODS: The study utilized one online sur

Development of the Pedestrian Anger Scale. A Pilot Study.

Anger has been closely related to risky behavior, and this last has been related to road accidents. The current research aimed to develop and validate a self-report questionnaire to measure anger in pedestrians (n = 550, 40.73% male) of a wide age rage (14-65 years, M = 27.91, SD = 13.21). The Parallel Analysis showed that the 15 items of the Pedestrian Anger Scale fitted satisfactorily in a four-factor solution: Anger because of obstructions or slowdowns caused by other pedestrians (α = .79), Anger because of hostility from drivers (α = .64), Anger because of bad conditions of the infrastruct

Pedestrian pathway characteristics and their implications on wheelchair users.

Individuals who use wheelchairs (WCs) frequently navigate over pathways with obstacles (e.g., bumps or curb descents) or terrain that is extremely rough. Surface characteristics such as roughness can have an effect on comfort and variables associated with bodily injury. Understanding these relationships can be helpful to ensure safe and comfortable access to all public and private pathways. This article reviews existing research related to the topics of surface roughness effects on WC user's bodies, surface roughness measurement techniques, and design guidelines and exposure limits that attemp

Car-to-pedestrian accident with a unique decollement injury.

The authors present a unique case of decollement injury found on an 85-year-old victim that was run-over by a tank truck. While external examination evidenced multiple severe injuries, autopsy confirmed the preliminary findings and revealed also the presence of an extensive decollement that spread from the left hemithorax to a wound on the left ankle, through which parts of the small intestines and pertaining mesentery protruded. The article offers an interpretation of the injuries sustained by the victim, focusing on the most probable decollement mechanism. The forensic pathologist in this ca

Magnitude and categories of pedestrian fatalities in South Africa.

Road traffic injuries, a major global public health burden, are concentrated in low-income and middle-income countries.(1) In contrast to high-income countries, pedestrians make up the largest group of road traffic injuries and fatalities in low- and middle-income countries. This article presents an analysis of pedestrian fatalities (2001-2004) in four South African cities. The article describes the magnitude, demographic, and temporal factors associated with pedestrian fatalities and presents a typological analysis to identify particular groups of at risk pedestrians. The analysis can serve t

Pedestrian Trajectory Dataset of Public European Squares.

Pedestrian trajectories are used to learn about human behavior in public space and the impact of spatial features on pedestrian flows. Currently, these trajectories are collected manually, with self-tracking devices, or with video cameras. Even when trajectories are obtained using computational techniques, such as using computer vision to trace them in space, these datasets are not made available for reproducibility or comparative studies between different locations. To close this gap, this paper makes available the data of pedestrian trajectories collected in 39 European squares. Firstly, we

The incidence burden of unreported pedestrian crashes in Illinois.

OBJECTIVE: Communities with high rates of pedestrians struck by motor vehicles may miss out on mitigation resources and suffer worse medical outcomes if crashes there go unreported to police. This study investigates the places, people, and communities in Illinois where struck pedestrians are most likely to go unreported. A better understanding of the true burden and distribution of struck pedestrians will help guide policy and direct investments and interventions where they are most needed. METHODS: Hospital records of pedestrians treated for injuries sustained by a motor vehicle that were no
