BACKGROUND: Training nursing students on different pediatric nursing procedures by interactive learning methods prior to their dealing with children can ensure providing them with an adequate knowledge base and skills. There is a gap between theory and clinical practice. One of the methods proposed to block the gap between training and clinical practice is to transform traditional education systems into new method-based learning. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of simulation, blended, and self-directed learning methods on nursing students' skills in some pediatric nursing procedu

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: The timeframe from delivery of critical care and the transition to comfort care for the dying child can occur over minutes, days, weeks, or months. During this transition from curative to comfort care, nurses can play an active role in the management of vulnerable dying children and their families.
OBJECTIVES/AIMS: The aims of this study were (1) to explore the actions, communication techniques, and interventions utilized by morally resilient registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) as they guide families through the transition from curative to comfort ca

Objective: This study's purpose is to better understand pediatric intensive care nursing perspectives on sedative management as a precursor to improving aspects of sedation assessment, titration, and communication. Methods/Design: We queried nurses in the pediatric intensive care unit at a 40+ bed quaternary care using an electronic survey about their experiences with sedation management. Data was collected using REDCap and statistical analyses were performed to assess for differences between experience levels in areas. Results: Seventy nurses responded with 42% response rate. More than 95% we

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of pediatric chronic conditions and demand for lower urinary tract symptom management have risen in recent decades, contributing to growing clinical demand for pediatric urology services. Meeting this demand requires a sufficient and well-supported workforce, and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) have become an increasingly recognized component of urological care delivery. The Pediatric Urology Nurses and Specialists (PUNS) organization represents APPs in pediatric urology in the United States and Canada. This study aimed to conduct a census survey of PUNS members t

PROBLEM: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a concern for healthcare professionals including pediatric nurses. A lack of understanding of the prevalence rates and factors associated with work-related PTSD in pediatric nurses exists.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Articles published in peer-reviewed journals, written in English, focusing on pediatric registered nurses working in inpatient direct-care settings that answered the research questions: (1) describe the prevalence of PTSD in direct-care inpatient pediatric nurses (2) identify factors associated with work-related PTSD were included in th

Female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) is a serious global public health problem, violating the basic human rights of girls and women. FGM/C is a form of child maltreatment. According to the World Health Organization 200 million girls and women have undergone FGM/C in thirty countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. FGM/C is also a concern in the United States (U.S.). Approximately 513,000 girls and women living in the U.S. are at risk for FGM/C or its consequences, representing a 4-fold increase within a decade. FGM/C places victims at risk for significant physical and psychologi

BACKGROUND: Nurses experience stress and suffering when they care for critically ill and dying patients. Moral distress occurs when nurses are unable to translate their moral choices into moral action. In response to this stress, nurses may experience burnout.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the attitudes and perceptions of the nurses who were ordered by the court to provide long-term care for Baby K, a female child with anencephaly.
METHOD: A questionnaire was developed to provide descriptive insight into the stress and distress the nurses experienced while caring for Baby K.
RESULTS: Nurses car

Each year thousands of children are hospitalized for traumatic injuries associated with physical abuse. Nurses in the pediatric intensive care unit must be knowledgeable and skilled in caring for the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and developmental needs of such children and their families. This article provides direction for pediatric nurses working in the critical care setting. Specifically, it describes the nursing care of children in a pediatric intensive care unit where the mechanism of nonaccidental injury is blunt force to the head, abdomen, or musculoskeletal system, based

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics Back to Sleep program in 1992 dramatically increased the incidence of posterior plagiocephaly in infants. In 2000, the craniofacial disorders program at Oregon Health & Science University established a plagiocephaly screening clinic staffed by pediatric nurse practitioners.
METHODS: Electronic medical records of patients seen in a single accredited craniofacial disorders clinic from 2005 to 2011 were reviewed retrospectively to identify patients screened independently by pediatric nurse practitioners for positional plagiocephaly versus synostosis

Due to medical advances in surgery and anesthesia and cost of hospital stays, more elective pediatric surgical procedures are being performed in outpatient settings. One proposed advantage of outpatient surgery is decreased anxiety or a shorter period of anxiety for pediatric patients and their families because they are able to go home shortly after the surgery. A literature review was conducted to describe anxiety experienced by pediatric patients and their families in the outpatient surgery setting and to explore ways to decrease that anxiety. Both children and parents reported not feeling e

The nurse practitioner in pediatric critical care is a distinct advanced practice nursing role that has seen a tremendous increase in development and implementation over the past 10 years. There is a paucity of literature on this unique and valuable role. A total of 74 nurse practitioners practicing in pediatric critical care were surveyed. Part I of the survey solicited descriptive information of the nurse practitioner including background, work environment, reporting structure, and salary. The respondents also identified their role responsibilities that included direct patient management, nu

Recent innovations in the use of balloon catheters to dilate stenosis have made it possible to successfully perform balloon valvuloplasty (BV) on stenotic intracardiac valves. BV is fast becoming the treatment of choice for isolated valvular pulmonary stenosis (IVPS) in pediatric patients. IVPS and other obstructive lesions involving the right ventricle and pulmonary arteries occur in 25% to 30% of all persons with congenital heart disease. Current data suggest that use of BV for IVPS provides both short- and long-term hemodynamic relief and eliminates the need for open heart surgery. BV is al

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and severity of post-bronchoscopy airway complications in pediatric patients, assess the impact of targeted nursing interventions, and identify prognostic risk factors, including procedure-related thresholds, influencing postoperative recovery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 216 pediatric patients who underwent flexible bronchoscopy at a tertiary referral center from February 2023 to February 2025. Airway complications, including hypoxemia (SpO₂ <90%), bronchospasm, laryngeal edema, aspiration pneumonia, and pneumoth

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare disease characterized by the formation of blisters and vesicles on the skin and mucous membranes. There are 4 types: simple, junctional, dystrophic, and Kindler syndrome. They can have serious complications such as difficult airway, syndactyly, wound superinfection, or squamous cell carcinoma. We present the case of a 6-year-old male patient with severe generalized recessive dystrophic EB, surgically intervened for syndactyly in the left upper limb and cures in both lower limbs. These patients have a high risk of suffering adverse events related to the surg
