Resistance to peer influence, smoking friends, cigarette and betel nut use, and gender among Pacific Islander youth.

The present study examined the relationships between resistance to peer influence and cigarette and betel nut use, as well as the potential mediating role of friends who use cigarettes and betel nut, among boys and girls in Guam. This study included 673 ethnically diverse students (49% female; M age = 12.7, SD = 0.89) from eight public middle schools. The mediation analysis demonstrated that higher resistance to peer influence for both cigarette and betel nut use was associated with lower cigarette and betel nut use directly and that this association was mediated by friends who used cigarette

Susceptibility to peer influence on prosocial behavior in adolescents with Mild Intellectual Disability or Borderline Intellectual Functioning.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with Mild Intellectual Disability (MID) or Borderline Intellectual Functioning (BIF) are highly susceptible to negative peer influence. However, research in typically developing adolescents shows that peers can also promote prosocial behavior, which is an opportunity for positive development. AIMS: The current study aimed to investigate the effect of peer influence on prosocial behavior in adolescents with MID or BIF. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In an experimental donation task, 40 adolescents with MID or BIF (Mage = 14.0, 40 % boys) were repeatedly asked how many of five

Social Diffusion and Peer Influence on Guideline-Adherent Tonsillectomy Prescribing in German Otolaryngologists: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite clear recommendations from evidence-based guidelines to restrict tonsillectomies for adult patients with infrequent tonsillitis, adoption among German otolaryngologists remains limited. Social influences, including opinion leaders and perceived social norms across peers, may shape practitioners' adherence to these guidelines. Therefore, this study examined how German otolaryngologists perceive peer social norms and opinion leaders regarding tonsillectomy guidelines and how these perceptions relate to their own guideline adherence. METHODS: In a cross-sectional online surve

Rethinking narratives about youth experiencing homelessness: The influence of self-determined motivation and peer relations on coping.

Using the cognitive appraisal theory of coping and the self-determination theory of motivation, we examined the shared variance of motivational orientations, attachment relationships, and gender on adaptive and maladaptive coping among youth experiencing homelessness. Several scales including The Global Motivation Scale (assessing motivational orientations; i.e., autonomous and controlled motivation), the Brief Cope (adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies), and the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (self-perceptions of relationships with mothers, fathers, and peers) were administered

Bullying and oral health in Egyptian adolescents: the moderating role of sense of coherence and resistance to peer influence.

BACKGROUND: Bullying is the intentional, repeated and prolonged aggressive behavior towards victim(s) who feel powerless to defend themselves. It could influence adolescents' mental health. Some adolescents possess coping skills which enable them to overcome such adversities. The present study assessed the association between bullying, sense of coherence (SOC), resistance to peer influence (RPI) and oral health in Egyptian adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey that included 12-16 year old adolescents attending 6 schools in Damanhour, Egypt was conducted from March to De

Peer and parent influences on youth skateboarding and factors that affect their decision to return to the sport after injury.

Skateboarding is an increasingly popular sport among youth, despite the fact that they are a high-risk group for injuries during this activity. The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore youths' perceptions about the influences that peers and parents have on their skateboarding; and to identify factors that affect their decisions about returning to the sport after injury. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 youth, 14-17 years of age, who had experienced a medically-treated injury while skateboarding during the past year. Applying thematic analyses, major findings i

Influences of gender identity on children's maltreatment of gender-nonconforming peers: a person × target analysis of aggression.

We investigated whether gender identity influences preadolescents' tendency to single out gender-atypical peers for abuse. Data were gathered from 195 boys and girls (M age = 10.1 years) in the fall and spring of a school year. Children self-reported multiple dimensions of gender identity (intergroup bias, felt pressure for gender differentiation, felt gender typicality, gender contentedness); peers assessed each other's social behavior (gender nonconformity, aggression toward each classmate). Using multilevel modeling, we examined how children's attacks on gender-nonconforming peers (relative

Too calloused to care: an experimental examination of factors influencing youths' displaced aggression against their peers.

People often displace their aggression against innocent targets. Notwithstanding the merits of previous research on displaced aggression, critical gaps remain. First, it is unclear whether and how situational and dispositional factors interact to influence displaced aggression. Moreover, it is unclear whether engaging in direct aggression increases or decreases displaced aggression. To address these gaps, the present experiment investigated how situational factors (provocateur availability, provocation intensity) and dispositional factors (callousness, trait aggressiveness) jointly influence d

An Experimental Study on the Influence of Friends and Popular Peers on Adolescents' Risky Decisions in a Private and Public Context.

UNLABELLED: Understanding why peers influence adolescents’ risky decisions requires identifying their primary sources of influence. This study compared the influence of friends and popular peers on adolescents’ risky decision-making within a high school setting. The sample consisted of 457 Dutch adolescents, aged 11–18 years (mean age = 14.32, SD = 1.86), with 53% identifying as female. Adolescents and their potential influencers were recruited from high schools. At these high schools, adolescents played the Columbia Card Task (CCT), during which they observed the choices made by their friends

Prospective Pathways from Affect to Drug Outcomes: Refusal Self-Efficacy in the Context of Peer Influences.

Objective: Non-alcohol drug (NAD) use and its associated consequences remain a prevalent problem among young adults. Both positive and negative affect play etiological roles in NAD. The perception of one's ability to refuse a drug in different situations (drug refusal self-efficacy) could be an important mediator between such affect and NAD outcomes (use and consequences). This study examined mediational pathways from affect to NAD use and NAD-related consequences via drug refusal self-efficacy. We also examined the moderating role of normative perceptions of peer NAD involvement. Method: Acro

Alcohol Use and Related Behaviors among Late Adolescent Urban Youth: Peer and Parent Influences.

Peer and parent influences on alcohol use and related risky behaviors were examined in a sample of late adolescent (M = 17.3 years; SD = 1.11 years) urban youth. Participants (N = 400) completed an online measure assessing peer influences of alcohol use and alcohol offers, and parent influences of rules against alcohol use and perceived levels of emotional family support, relative to youths' alcohol use, binge drinking, alcohol-related consequences, and intentions to drink. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that increased peer alcohol use and alcohol offers were associated with youths'

Social help or harm? An egocentric network analysis of college peer influence on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology.

Previous research has shown that peers influence college women's body attitudes and behaviors. However, many of these studies have examined similarities among peer dyads or specific groups and have not evaluated peer behaviors that may be particularly influential (e.g., appearance-focused social media use). The current study used an egocentric social network approach (i.e., participants identify and report on their social networks) to examine the collective influence of college social networks on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology. College students (N = 94; 94% identified as a cisgender

The impact of cultural identity, parental communication, and peer influence on substance use among Indigenous youth in Canada.

Heavy drinking and smoking have been found to be among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality within Indigenous youth in North America. The focus of this study was to examine the relative roles of cultural identity, parent-child communication about the harms of substance use (SU), and perception about peers' opinions on heavy drinking and cigarette smoking among Indigenous youth. Strong Indigenous cultural identity, parent-child communication about SU, and affiliation with peers who do not use and/or who disapprove of substance use were all expected to reduce risk for heavy drinking and

Influence of Childhood Psychological Maltreatment on Peer Attachment Among Chinese Adolescents: The Mediation Effects of Emotion Regulation Strategies.

The formation of peer attachment is vitally important for the mental health of adolescents. Additionally, converging evidences show that childhood emotional trauma leads to poor peer attachment during adolescence. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism accounting for the link between early emotional trauma and adolescent peer attachment. Therefore, the present study is intended to examine the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment (CPM) and peer attachment among Chinese adolescents and reveal its underlying mechanism. In total, we collected data from 670 ado

Reciprocal relationships between depressive symptoms and peer attachment in Chinese adolescents: The influence of early parental harsh discipline.

BACKGROUND: Despite high social acceptance and prevalence of harsh discipline in China, its long-term cascading effects on adolescent emotional/interpersonal challenges remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether peer attachment and depressive symptoms would be reciprocally related over time and how early harsh discipline influences these dynamics. PARTICIPANT AND SETTING: Data was drawn from a longitudinal study over a 9-year period. Parental harsh discipline was reported by both parents at Grade 1-3 (N = 403), and depressive symptoms and peer attachment were reported by adolesce

The influence of peer relationship on preschoolers' merit-based resource allocation in first-party and third-party contexts.

PURPOSE: Merit is a functional principle of distributive justice, and even young children take merit-based cues into consideration. Fairness requires an objective assessment of merit, but objectivity is often impaired by peer relationship. This study examined how preschool children incorporate recipients' peer relationship in allocating resources based on merit, in both first-party (Study 1) and third-party (Study 2) contexts. METHODS: A total of 240 children, aged 3 to 7, participated in the study. In Study 1, 120 children acquired resources through collaboration with either a stranger or a
