Acute flaccid myelitis is a debilitating illness characterized by acute onset of limb weakness, with one or more spinal segments displaying magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed gray matter lesions. Since the first outbreak in 2014, tracking by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has demonstrated biennial epidemics in the United States, with a current outbreak occurring in 2018. This research exploits the introduction of shale gas wells in Pennsylvania in response to growing controversy around the drilling method of hydraulic fracturing. Using detailed location data on maternal addresses and GIS coordinates of gas wells, this study examines singleton births to mothers residing close to a shale gas well from 2003 to 2010 in Pennsylvania. The necropsy records of 65 elk ranging from 1 day to 13(1/2) years of age were reviewed to determine the primary cause of death of each animal. The animal carcasses were submitted from 22 separate Pennsylvania elk farms over an approximately 8-year period. The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), until recently was recorded only from the southeastern and southwestern counties of Pennsylvania. Since 1968, this species has expanded its range and is reported from 63 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. This range extension is a matter of concern to the medical community and to physicians throughout Pennsylvania, particularly those with practices in areas where this tick was previously unknown and who may not be familiar with the symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Duck viral enteritis (DVE) outbreaks occurred at two different locations in Pennsylvania in 1991 and 1992. From February through May 1991, an outbreak of rubella occurred among the Amish in Pennsylvania that was part of a widespread rubella outbreak reported among the Amish in at least six states during 1991 (1). The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDH), in cooperation with CDC, conducted an investigation to document cases of rubella among pregnant Amish women in Lancaster County and a cohort study to estimate the risk for congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) among infants born to Amish mothers from November 1, 1991, through January 31, 1992.
