[Oligophrenia as a disability diagnosis. Disability pensions in the period 1967-1992 in a group from Bergen born in 1940].

The authors discuss the use of unspecified oligophrenia as a diagnosis for disability pension, and draw attention to unrecognized oligophrenia. The study is based on a cohort of 1,570 persons, comprising all live births from 1940 of the mothers then residing in Bergen. The cohort was followed up in the school system in Bergen at age 14 years, again at age 30 years (1971) and up to the end of 1992. Relevant information on disability pensions was extracted from the files of the National Insurance Administration. The results of medical and psychological examinations in 1971 of a random sample of

The impact of pension on the health behavior of elderly rural residents: evidence from China.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy behavior is an important factor threatening the health of older rural residents in China. We examine the effects of receiving pension on elderly rural residents' health behavior (namely conscious control of sugar, salt, and edible oil intake, as well as learning health or wellness knowledge), also including effect heterogeneity by income level and gender. METHODS: Using China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS) in 2020, we used the policy rule of the China's New Rural Pension Scheme that only those people who are over 60 years old can have access to pension as the natural

Health status, mental health and air quality: evidence from pensioners in Europe.

Environmental quality is an important determinant of individuals' well-being and one of the main concerns of the governments is the improvement on air quality and the protection of public health. This is especially the case of sensitive demographic groups, such as the old aged people. However, the question this study attempts to answer is how do individuals value the effects on the environment. The study explores the effects of old and early public pension schemes, as well as the impact of air pollution on health status of retired citizens. The empirical analysis relies on detailed micro-level

Identification of alcohol abuse and transition from long-term unemployment to disability pension.

AIMS: The aim of the study was to reveal potential gaps and inconsistencies in the identification of alcohol abuse in health care and in employment services and to analyse the granting of disability pensions with respect to the alcohol abuse identification pattern. METHODS: The material consisted of documentary information on 505 long-term unemployed subjects with low employability sent to the development project entitled 'Eligibility for a Disability Pension' in 2001-2006 in Finland. The dichotomous variables 'Alcohol abuse identified in employment services' and 'Alcohol abuse identified in

Work participation and disability pension after work-related PTSD: trajectories and impact of occupation.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines work participation (WP) and disability pension (DP) among patients diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at Danish Departments of Occupational Medicine. The aim was to identify WP trajectories and determine whether occupation is associated with poor labour market attachment. METHODS: A nationwide longitudinal study was conducted on register data from patients diagnosed with PTSD at Departments of Occupational Medicine in Denmark from 2000 to 2015. WP was operationalised as a score (WPS, Work Participation Score) derived from the proportion of wee

The impact of delayed retirement on the financial sustainability of China's urban employee pension insurance fund.

Against the backdrop of accelerating population aging and mounting concerns over the financial viability of public pension systems, this paper develops an actuarial simulation framework that integrates demographic dynamics, fund revenue and expenditure rules, and the central adjustment mechanism. We evaluate four scenarios: baseline, delayed retirement only, national pooling only, and the combined reform. Our findings indicate that in the absence of policy intervention, regional disparities in fund balances intensify markedly: the western region enters cumulative deficit first, followed by the

Disability pension among gynaecological cancer survivors with or without radiation-induced survivorship syndromes.

PURPOSE: Gynaecological cancer patients treated with external radiation therapy to the pelvis may face long-lasting and long-term gastrointestinal syndromes. The aim of this study was to assess the association between such radiation-induced survivorship syndromes and disability pension among gynaecological cancer survivors treated with pelvic radiation therapy. METHODS: This prospective register study included gynaecological cancer survivors (n=247) treated during 1991-2003, alive at the time of the study, and <65 years of age. In 2006, they completed a postal questionnaire measuring patient-

Assessing the degree of residual confounding: a cohort study on the association between disability pension and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that disability pensioners have a higher risk of premature death than others, but residual confounding has been suggested. The aim was to assess the degree of residual confounding of the association between disability pension (DP) and risk of premature death. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of everyone aged 19-64 years, living in Sweden 31 December 2004 (n = 5 406 469), followed up through 2010. Mortality hazard rates over time were estimated for three groups; incident disability pensioners during 2005 from start of DP (February-December 2005), prevalent

The association of mobility disability and weight status with risk of disability pension: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Mobility disability (MD) and obesity are conditions which have been associated with weaker labour market attachment. This study investigates whether the combined burden of MD and obesity increase the risk of disability pension compared with having only one of these conditions (the reference group). METHODS: A nationwide cohort study, based on national surveys made between 1996 and 2011, was conducted including 50,015 individuals aged 19-64 years who were followed-up in a large database in terms of attainment of disability pension until 31 December 2012 (at the latest). [Psychosomatic rehabilitation: effects of pre-treatment counselling under the statutory pension insurance scheme].

BACKGROUND: Currently, little is known about the influence of pre-treatment in rehabilitation outcomes of patients with psychosomatic symptoms. This study examines whether there are differences in therapy motivation and impairment between patients with and those without pre-treatment measures. Additionally, the outcome for patients with prior knowledge of psychosomatic rehabilitation is analyzed. METHODS: As part of a randomized controlled pre-post design the Patients' questionnaire of therapy motivation (PAREMO) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) were distributed to 166 patients in psycho

Pension reforms, economic security, and mental health: The need for a human rights-based approach.

Pension systems play a crucial role in providing economic security and supporting well-being in later life. However, as governments implement reforms to ensure financial sustainability-such as raising the retirement age, reducing benefits, and shifting to defined-contribution schemes-these measures often overlook their psychological and social consequences. Pension insecurity has been linked to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as increased social isolation, particularly among vulnerable populations, including those in physically demanding jobs, low-income workers, and indivi

Analgesics and ASH medications in workers increase the risk of disability pension and mortality: prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Relying on medication for musculoskeletal and mental disorders are common, but may have long-term consequences. This study investigates whether use of analgesics and anxiolytic/sedative/hypnotic (ASH) medication increases the risk of disability pension and mortality. METHODS: After completing a survey in 2005, 7773 female eldercare workers were followed for 11 years in a national register. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for disability pension and mortality from using analgesics and ASH. RESULTS: During follow-up, 10.3% obtained disability pension and 2.4% died. For use of analg

Prevalence and determinants of frailty and associated comorbidities among older Gurkha welfare pensioners in Nepal.

AIM: Population aging is increasing in low-income countries. Despite this, there is distinct lack of knowledge about the prevalence of comorbidities and determinants of frailty among older people in these countries. METHODS: We examined data from "Health and Social Care Needs Assessment Survey of the Gurkha Welfare Pensioners" carried out in 2014. Participants were aged ≥60 years from the Gorakha, Lamjung and Tanahu districts of Nepal. Face-to-face interviews were carried out using validated questionnaires. Demographic data, socioeconomic status, and self-reported symptoms and illnesses were

[The Impact of Psychological Comorbidities Concerning a Pension for Reduced Earning Capacity after Medical Rehabilitation].

Background: The role of psychological comorbidities as a risk factor associated with a further chronification in low back pain is evident. In this paper we explore, whether psychological comorbidities recorded in the discharge letters have a time-stable and from other risk factors independent impact on a pension for reduced earning capacity. Methods: A sample of 10% is drawn from a routine data set provided by the German Pension Fund. Several risk factors are defined and presented descriptively. The survival analysis will be accomplished by cox regressions. Results: Younger patients (≤ 55 year
