BACKGROUND: Type I Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection causes severe gastric inflammation and is a predisposing factor for gastric carcinogenesis. However, its infection status in stepwise gastric disease progression in this gastric cancer prevalent area has not been evaluated; it is also not known its impact on commonly used epidemiological gastric cancer risk markers such as gastrin-17 (G-17) and pepsinogens (PGs) during clinical practice.

32 children (mean age 12 years, range 6-18) with non-specific abdominal pain and Campylobacter pylori positive gastritis received a six week course of daily oral amoxycillin (50 mg/kg) and tinidazole (20 mg/kg). In the great majority of cases vitamin B12 deficiency is caused by chronic atrophic gastritis. This study has compared several different tests for the identification of patients for whom substitution therapy is needed or warranted. It is concluded that serum tests reflecting the state of the gastric body mucosa (serum pepsinogen A combined with serum gastrin or serum pepsinogen C) appear to be the logical first step in the workup of these patients in terms of high sensitivity and superior specificity as compared with other tests.

It has been known that patients with chronic renal failure have elevated concentrations of serum pepsinogens, which are raised by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection of the stomach. BACKGROUND AND AIM: In the gastric mucosa, pepsinogen II (PgII) is produced/secreted by glands in the mucus-secreting antral and cardia compartments, but also by the chief cells and the oxyntic glands. Increasing PgII serum levels are associated with the whole spectrum of gastric inflammatory diseases, including gastritis induced by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
