Seven patients with gut and pancreatic endocrine tumours have been treated with a long acting somatostatin analogue (SMS 201-995), given as a twice daily subcutaneous injection. This produced dramatic improvement in their endocrine related symptoms, in association with a fall in circulating tumour peptides. Immunoreactivities (IRs) of peptide histidine methionine (PHM) as well as somatostatin and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were measured in patients with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT) and age-matched control subjects. Epidermal cells from psoriatic lesions demonstrate a very low cAMP response to beta-adrenergic stimuli. We have shown that a similar abnormality occurs in dermal fibroblasts from affected areas of skin. Obstructive and central sleep apneas are treatable disorders, which contribute to cardiovascular morbidity in older adults. Younger adults with Marfan syndrome may also be at risk for sleep apnea, but the relation between cardiovascular complications and sleep apnea is unknown. We used MiniScreen8 portable monitoring devices for polygraphy in 68 consecutive adults with Marfan syndrome (33 men, 35 women, 41 +/- 14 years old) to investigate frequency of sleep apnea and its relation to cardiovascular morbidity.
