The acaricidal efficacy of peracetic acid and deltamethrin against the fowl tick, Argas persicus, infesting laying hens.

The fowl tick, Argas persicus (Oken), is of veterinary importance as a parasite of poultry and wild birds. The antitick efficacy, in vitro and in vivo, of peracetic acid (PAA) and deltamethrin (DMT) was tested separately against A. persicus through the dipping technique. PAA (0.5 %) was highly efficient against soft tick larvae (A. persicus), resulting in 100 % mortality after 2 min. The lethal concentrations LC(50) and LC(95) were 0.310 and 0.503 %, respectively. The lethal time values LT(50) and LT(95) were 5.34 and 40.00 min, respectively, after treatment with PAA (0.25 %). Two minutes afte

Growth medium sterilization using decomposition of peracetic acid for more cost-efficient production of omega-3 fatty acids by Aurantiochytrium.

Aurantiochytrium can produce significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically docosahexaenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid. Use of a glucose-based medium for heterotrophic growth is needed to achieve a high growth rate and production of abundant lipids. However, heat sterilization for reliable cultivation is not appropriate to heat-sensitive materials and causes a conversion of glucose via browning (Maillard) reactions. Thus, the present study investigated the use of a direct degradation of Peracetic acid (PAA) for omega-3 production by Aurantiochytrium. Polymer-based bioreactor and

Impacts on water quality before and after water line cleaning and disinfection with peracetic acid in swine farms.

While it is well recognized that maintaining good water quality is a cornerstone of swine husbandry, research on its role in swine health, performance, and management remains limited. This study evaluated the impacts on water quality after a 0.78% peracetic acid administration in water lines for 24 h between groups of pigs to remove water line mineral scale and biofilm. A secondary objective of the study was to evaluate if there were water quality differences between the water sample location (well source vs. rooms). Six, wean-to-finish swine farms in Iowa sourcing water from on-site wells wer

Comparison of peracetic acid and bacteriophage application by vascular rinsing on Salmonella reduction in lymph nodes of goat carcasses.

The ability of carcass vascular rinsing supplemented with bacteriophage (BP) and peracetic acid (PAA) to reduce Salmonella in lymph nodes (LNs) from experimentally infected goats was determined. Cull dairy goats (n = 60) were randomly assigned to a control (CN, nonrinsed) and two vascular rinse treatments: BP and PAA. Goats were inoculated intradermally with Salmonella Enteritidis and slaughtered after a 7-day incubation. Vascular rinsing was performed postexsanguination via a catheter in the heart. Carcasses were skinned, eviscerated, sprayed with 5% lactic acid, and chilled (2°C) overnight.

Constructing antibiotic residue-Fe-based magnetic biochar coupling peracetic acid activation system for efficient pleuromutilin detoxification in wastewater.

Improper disposal of antibiotic wastewater and antibiotic fermentation residues (AFRs) poses serious threats to ecosystems and human health, necessitating the development of effective treatment technologies. In this study, K3Fe(C2O4)3 was employed as a novel feedstock to prepare Fe-based biochar (0.1Fe-BC800) through coupling with AFRs, which was then applied to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for the efficient degradation of pleuromutilin (PLM) in wastewater ("waste-treat-waste"). The results displayed that the invented Fe-BC800/PAA coupling system exhibited superior performance, with a PLM deg

Insights into CoFe2O4/Peracetic Acid Catalytic Oxidation Process for Iopamidol Degradation: Performance, Mechanisms, and I-DBP Formation Control.

In chlorination disinfection treatment, residual iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs) are the precursors to iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs). This study employed CoFe2O4 nanoparticle catalytic peracetic acid oxidation (CoFe2O4/PAA) to remove iopamidol (IPM) and control I-DBP formation. The experimental results demonstrated that over 90% of the IPM degradation was achieved in 40 min. The metastable intermediate (≡Co(II)-OO(O)CCH3), rather than the alkoxyl radicals, was identified as the dominant oxidation species (ROS). The electron transfer pathways between the metastable intermedi

Histological changes and antioxidant enzyme activity in signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) associated with sub-acute peracetic acid exposure.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a powerful disinfectant recently adopted as a therapeutic agent in aquaculture. A concentration of 10 mg L(-1) PAA effectively suppresses zoospores of Aphanomyces astaci, the agent of crayfish plague. To aid in establishing safe therapeutic guideline, the effects of PAA on treated crayfish were investigated through assessment of histological changes and oxidative damage. Adult female signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (n = 135) were exposed to 2 mg L(-1) and 10 mg L(-1) of PAA for 7 days followed by a 7 day recovery period in clean water. Singlet Oxygen-Mediated Degradation of 17β-Estradiol by Peracetic Acid Activated over Co Species Confined in Carbon Nanotubes.

17β-Estradiol (E2), a highly bioactive steroid estrogen, poses potential ecological risks even at trace concentrations in aquatic environments. In this study, a nanoconfined Co-based catalyst (Co@Cin) was employed to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for efficient E2 degradation. Microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations indicated that Co-containing species were highly dispersed within the CNT-based architecture, while the graphitic tubular framework was largely preserved. Compared with PAA alone, CNTs, Co@Cin alone, and the externally loaded Co@Cout/PAA system, Co@Cin/PAA exhibited substant

Dynamic characteristics of two alkoxy radicals towards emerging pollutants with different molecular structures in peracetic acid activation systems.

The distinct roles of the two dominant organic radicals produced in peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes, acetyloxy radicals (CH₃COO•) and peroxyacetyl radicals (CH₃COOO•), in degrading emerging pollutants with different molecular structures remain unclear. In this study, a Co(II)/PAA system that generates organic radicals was constructed, and the degradation behaviors and mechanisms of seven emerging contaminants were investigated by combining experimental kinetics with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Organic radicals were identified as the dominant reactive s

Pre-exposure to peracetic acid followed by UV treatment for deactivating vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis through intracellular attack.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a global health threat to aquatic environments and its propagation is a hot topic. Therefore, deactivating antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and removing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from water is crucial for controlling AMR transmission. Peracetic acid (PAA), which is known for its potent oxidizing properties and limited by-product formation, is emerging as a favorable disinfectant for water treatment. In this study, we aimed to assess the efficacy of pre-exposure to PAA followed by UV treatment (PAA-UV/PAA) compared with the simultaneous applicati

Iron-modified biochar enhanced the activation of peracetic acid for removal of imidacloprid: efficiency, active species and catalytic mechanism.

Imidacloprid (IMI) is a highly toxic organic pollutant. Therefore, effective IMI treatment methods must be developed. This study synthesized iron-modified rape straw biochar (Fe-RSB) to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for IMI removal from water. At the optimal concentrations of 0.55 g∙L− 1 for Fe-RSB and 0.25 mM for PAA, the removal of IMI reached 81.6% after 60 min. Additionally, the IMI removal was minimally affected over a broad pH range (3–11). CH3C(O)O· and CH3C(O)OO· played crucial roles in the IMI degradation. The degradation pathway of IMI consisted of three pathways, and the ecological

Crystallographic phase engineering of MnO2 for efficient peracetic acid activation: Unraveling the critical role of surface manganese oxidation state.

This study systematically investigates the influence of MnO2 crystallographic phase on the activation efficiency of peracetic acid (PAA). Firstly, α-, β-, γ-, and δ-MnO2 were synthesized through tailored methods. The oxidative activity of these catalysts was evaluated based on the degradation kinetics of naproxen (NAP), revealing the following catalytic activity order: α-MnO2 > δ-MnO2 > γ-MnO2 > β-MnO2. Further analysis revealed that NAP oxidation in the different crystallographic phases MnO2/PAA process mainly depends on RO• and 1O2. Comprehensive characterization and density functional theor

Iron speciation and microbial functional responses shape sludge dewatering and phase-specific biological risks during Fe2+/ peracetic acid treatment.

The disposal of waste activated sludge (WAS) is challenged by poor dewaterability and environmental risks associated with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Although advanced oxidation is promising for sludge conditioning, whether prolonged oxidation continuously benefits both dewatering and biological risk control remains unclear. Here, Fe2+-activated peracetic acid (PAA) was applied to WAS to evaluate the time-dependent responses of sludge dewaterability, ARGs, potential pathogens, extracellular polymeric substances, iron speciation and microbial functions. The Fe2+/PAA process exhibited di

Chemical and biological mechanisms of wild-type, multidrug-resistant bacteria inactivation via low-dose UVA/Fe²⁺/peracetic acid treatment.

The proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) owing to antibiotic misuse has raised significant concerns regarding the global infectious disease crisis. To address this concern by a disinfection process, we used low-dose, UVA- and Fe2+-activated peracetic acid (UVA/Fe2+/PAA) to eliminate ARB and ARGs in water, evaluate the system's kinetics, and elucidate the inactivation mechanism. The UVA/Fe2+/PAA system completely inactivated 106 CFU/mL of wild-type, tetracycline and sulfanilamide multidrug-resistant isolates within 30 min. Increasing the UVA

Coordination Microenvironment Engineering in Nanoconfined Structures Shifts Peracetic Acid Activation toward Broad-Spectrum Radicals for Enhanced Hospital Wastewater Purification.

Peracetic acid (PAA) presents a promising solution for hospital wastewater treatment, by integrating direct disinfection with the catalytic generation of oxidative species for pollutant degradation. While nanoconfined catalysts exhibit high efficiency and low metal leaching in PAA activation, their reactive outputs have been largely confined to limited broad-spectrum pollutant removal in such complex wastewater. Herein, we break the traditional paradigm of nanoconfined catalysts favoring nonradical pathways by modulating the iron coordination microenvironment within novel carbon nanotube-confi

Presence of antimicrobial resistance genes in biofilms from swine drinking water pipes before and after treatment with peracetic acid.

Biofilms can be problematic to swine drinking water systems as they can harbor pathogens, decrease water quality, and may contribute to antimicrobial treatment failure. Water-administered antimicrobials are used for disease treatment in swine populations, yet, little is known about water line ecology and the impact it can have on antimicrobial resistance and stewardship. Water line cleaning and disinfection may aid in removal of water line biofilms, improve swine health, and antimicrobial stewardship. Water line samples were collected pre-treatment (0), 24 h post-treatment with 0.78% CID 2000

Regulating the covalency of Co-O bond by Fe incorporation achieves efficient peracetic acid activation for durable water purification.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) relying on peracetic acid (PAA) have drawn extensive attention due to their environmental benignity. Enhancing the activation of PAA and the creation of organic radicals (RO•) are of great significance for decontamination. Regulating the covalency of the metal-oxygen bond can break the limitation of PAA activation and improve the generation of radicals. Herein, CuCo0.6Fe0.4O2 with a high covalency of Co-O bond is developed by Fe incorporation in CuCoO2. The CuCo0.6Fe0.4O2/PAA system exhibits superior catalytic performance for 2,4,6-TCP degradation (97.2 %),

Efficient activation of peracetic acid by cobalt modified nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for drugs degradation: Performance and mechanism insight.

Peracetic acid (PAA) has garnered significant attention as a novel disinfectant owing to its remarkable oxidative capacity and minimal potential to generate byproducts. In this study, we prepared a novel catalyst, denoted as cobalt modified nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@N-CNTs), and evaluated it for PAA activation. Modification with cobalt nanoparticles (∼4.8 nm) changed the morphology and structure of the carbon nanotubes, and greatly improved their ability to activate PAA. Co@N-CNTs/PAA catalytic system shows outstanding catalytic degradation ability of antiviral drugs. Under neutral c
