How Refugees' Stereotypes Toward Host Society Members Predict Acculturation Orientations: The Role of Perceived Discrimination.

Refugee migration leads to increased diversity in host societies and refugees have to face many stereotyped attitudes in the host society. However, there has been little research on minority group stereotypes toward host society members and how these stereotypes relate to the acculturation-relevant attitudes of refugees in their first phase of acculturation. This study surveyed 783 refugees in Germany who had migrated mostly in the so-called "refugee crisis" between 2015 and 2016. At the time of the survey in 2018, they had been in Germany for an average of 27 months (SD = 15 months). These re

Association of Perceived Stress and Discrimination on Medication Adherence among Diverse Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In the United States, many patients remain uncontrolled, in part, due to poor medication adherence. Efforts to improve hypertension control include not only attending to medical management of the disease but also the social determinants of health, which impact medication adherence, and ultimately blood pressure control. PURPOSE: To determine which social determinants - health care access or community and social stressors - explain medication adherence. METHODS: In this cross-section

Effects of perceived racial discrimination on health status and health behavior: a differential mediation hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective data tested a "differential mediation" hypothesis: The relations (found in previous research) between perceived racial discrimination and physical health status versus health-impairing behavior (problematic substance use) are mediated by two different types of affective reactions, internalizing and externalizing. METHOD: The sample included 680 African American women from the Family and Community Health Study (M age = 37 years at Time 1; 45 years at Time 4). Four waves of data were analyzed. Perceived discrimination was assessed, along with anxiety and depression (inter

Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents.

Utilizing the concept of race-based traumatic stress, this study tested whether posttraumatic stress symptoms explain the process by which perceived discrimination is related to health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents. One hundred ten participants were recruited from a large health maintenance organization in Northern California. Mediational analyses indicated that adolescents who perceived more discrimination reported worse posttraumatic stress symptoms, controlling for covariates. In turn, adolescents who experienced heightened posttraumatic stress symptoms reported more alc

Perceived everyday discrimination and leukocyte gene expression in a nationally representative sample of U.S. Adults.

Perceived everyday discrimination is a psychosocial stressor that is adversely associated with biological health. These associations may be partly mediated by the modulation of leukocyte gene expression through stress-related neuroendocrine pathways. The Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA) provides a framework for examining how everyday discrimination may alter molecular signaling pathways through coordinated changes in gene expression. This study quantified associations between perceived everyday discrimination and CTRA patterns in a diverse, nationally representative sampl

Social Capital, Perceived Discrimination, and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults Across Three Racial/Ethnic Groups.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults perceive discrimination across interpersonal, community, and structural levels, contributing to a wide range of adverse health outcomes. The present study investigated the racial/ethnic differences in perceived discrimination, social capital, and depressive symptoms, and the direct associations of perceived discrimination and social capital with depressive symptoms, as well as the moderating role of social capital, among community-dwelling older adults from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. METHODS: Data were drawn from Round 3 of the National Social Life, Hea

Chronotypes and college health behaviors: examining the roles of social support, stress, and perceived discrimination.

Objective: Individuals with an evening chronotype face greater risk for adverse health outcomes. We examined whether social support, stress, and discrimination moderate the associations between chronotype, alcohol use, and depression/anxiety symptoms among college students. Participants: At a southeastern university in Fall 2017, 704 participants (mean age = 19.44 years; 71% female) completed measures on chronotype, alcohol use, depression/anxiety symptoms, social support, stress, and discrimination. Methods: Moderation analyses assessed stress and social support as joint moderators of alcohol

Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and cigarette smoking behaviors among a sample of people with HIV.

This study was a secondary analysis of baseline data from a clinical trial of an intensive group-based smoking cessation treatment for people with HIV (PWH) who smoke. It examined the cross-sectional relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination (PED) and cigarette smoking variables (i.e., nicotine dependence, motivation to quit smoking, self-efficacy to quit smoking) among PWH and explored whether depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between PED and smoking variables. Participants (N = 442; Mage = 50.6; 52.8% Male; 56.3% Black, non-Hispanic; 6.3% White, non-Hispanic; 13.3% His

Overt acts of perceived discrimination reported by British working-age adults with and without disability.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to discrimination can have a negative impact on health. There is little robust evidence on the prevalence of exposure of people with disabilities to discrimination, the sources and nature of discrimination they face, and the personal and contextual factors associated with increased risk of exposure. METHODS: Secondary analysis of de-identified cross-sectional data from the three waves of the UK's 'Life Opportunities Survey'. RESULTS: In the UK (i) adults with disabilities were over three times more likely than their peers to be exposed to discrimination, (ii) the two mos

Intergenerational communication regarding Indian Residential Schools: Implications for cultural identity, perceived discrimination, and depressive symptoms.

Two studies assessed the nature of parental communication about the trauma of Indian Residential Schools (IRSs) in relation to the psychological distress of their adult offspring, and whether the link between parental communication and distress was mediated by offsprings' greater awareness of collective discrimination or sense of pride in cultural identity. In Study 1, an online survey of Indigenous participants from across Canada (N = 498) demonstrated a curvilinear relation between the extent to which parents talked about their negative IRS experiences and the severity of depressive symptoms

The Role of Stress and Perceived Social Support in the Association Between Perceived Discrimination and Mental Health Among Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong.

International migrant workers often face discrimination and poor work conditions that may negatively affect their mental health. Female migrant domestic workers (MDW), who often must reside in their place of work, may face additional daily stressors and discrimination compared with other international migrant workers. To address the stresses from discrimination and other challenges faced by MDWs, use of social support networks are often encouraged to improve mental well-being. This study seeks to examine the mediating effect of stress between perceived discrimination and self-reported mental h

Perceived discrimination and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults living with HIV in China.

Middle-aged and older adults with HIV experience double discrimination and cognitive impairment due to both their HIV status and their age. However, the relationship between perceived discrimination and self-reported cognitive ability in middle-aged and older people living with HIV (PLWH) is less clear. We measured self-reported perceived discrimination and cognitive ability using the Expanded Everyday Discrimination Scale and the subscale of the AIDS Health Assessment Questionnaire (AIDS-HAQ). The study sample included 324 middle-aged and older PLWH (over 45 years old) from five designated HI

Perceived HIV risk as a predictor of sexual risk behaviors and discrimination among high-risk women.

HIV risk perception and discrimination are important determinants of HIV prevention among vulnerable populations. Using Detroit's 2016 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) Survey, we evaluated demographic variables, risk behaviors, and perception of HIV stigma and discrimination stratified by perceived HIV risk (high, medium, low) in a sample of high-risk women. Significant variables were identified using Pearson Chi-squared tests and one-way analysis of variance tests. Among 541 females surveyed, 93.0% were black and 87.7% lived in poverty. Women's poverty (p = .010), employment (p = .
