Evidence for a specific distortion in perceptual body image in eating disorders: A replication and extension.

A core feature of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, is an overestimation of body size. A key question is whether this overestimation arises solely from body image concerns typical in eating disorders, or if there is an additional perceptual disturbance. To address this question, we applied a two-component model of body size estimation that has been thoroughly replicated in the body image literature concerning healthy individuals. This model shows statistically independent, additive effects on body size estimates of: a) body image concerns, and b) a perceptual component known as contr

Neurofunctional differences and similarities between persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) (ICD-11) and anxiety disorders (ANX) share behavioural symptoms like anxiety, avoidance, social withdrawal, hyperarousal, or palpitation as well as neurological symptoms like vertigo, stance and gait disorders. Furthermore, previous studies have shown a bidirectional link between vestibulo-spatial and anxiety neural networks. So far, there have been no neuroimaging-studies comparing these groups. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this explorative study was to investigate differences and similarities of neural correlates between these two pati

Voice Hearing in Borderline Personality Disorder Across Perceptual, Subjective, and Neural Dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) commonly occur in the context of borderline personality disorder (BPD) yet remain poorly understood. AVH are often perceived by patients with BPD as originating from inside the head and hence viewed clinically as "pseudohallucinations," but they nevertheless have a detrimental impact on well-being. METHODS: The current study characterized perceptual, subjective, and neural expressions of AVH by using an auditory detection task, experience sampling and questionnaires, and functional neuroimaging, respectively. RESULTS: Perceptually, reported AV

Perceptual switch rates with ambiguous structure-from-motion figures in bipolar disorder.

Slowing of the rate at which a rivalrous percept switches from one configuration to another has been suggested as a potential trait marker for bipolar disorder. We measured perceptual alternations for a bistable, rotating, structure-from-motion cylinder in bipolar and control participants. In a control task, binocular depth rendered the direction of cylinder rotation unambiguous to monitor participants' performance and attention during the experimental task. A particular direction of rotation was perceptually stable, on average, for 33.5s in participants without psychiatric diagnosis. Euthymic

Modulations of cognitive flexibility in obsessive compulsive disorder reflect dysfunctions of perceptual categorization.

BACKGROUND: Despite cognitive inflexibility is trait like in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients and underlies clinical symptomatology, it is elusive at what stage of information processing deficits, leading to cognitive inflexibility, emerges. We hypothesize that inhibitory control mechanisms during early stimulus categorization and integration into a knowledge system underlie these deficits. METHODS: We examined N = 25 adolescent OCD patients and matched healthy controls (HC) in a paradigm manipulating the importance of the knowledge system to perform task switching. This was done

The predictive validity and accuracy of a screening test for language delay and auditory perceptual disorder.

Infants (321) who had been screened for language delay and auditory perceptual problems at 9 months of age were evaluated 1 year later. Of these infants 88.6% were correctly classified as at-risk or not-at-risk of delayed linguistic development. The correlation between performance on the screen and on a language scale was 0.49. The great majority of those with receptive and expressive delay continued to show problems at 2 years of age, whereas half of those with expressive delay alone were within normal limits. No evidence was found that a history of fluctuating hearing loss contributed to the

Attentional and perceptual disturbances in children with Tourette's syndrome, attention deficit disorder, and epilepsy.

Perceptual, motor, and neuromaturational competence were assessed using a battery of tasks with three groups of children with diagnosed disorders of Tourette's syndrome (TS), attentional deficit with no known organic substrate (Constitutional AD), and attentional deficit disorder in children with epilepsy (E-ADD). The purpose was to determine how the three groups related to each other on these measures and to establish clinical validation of the test battery. As predicted, the control and the TS groups did much better than the ADD and seizure groups. The TS group differed from the controls on

Frontal evoked γ activity modulates behavioural performance in Autism Spectrum Disorders in a perceptual simultaneity task.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are associated with anomalies in time perception. In a perceptual simultaneity task, individuals with ASD demonstrate superior performance compared to typically developing (TD) controls. γ-activity, a robust marker of visual processing, is reportedly altered in ASD in response to a wide variety of tasks and these differences may be related to superior performance in perceptual simultaneity. Using time-frequency analysis, we assessed evoked γ-band phase-locking in magnetoencephalographic recordings of 16 ASD individuals and 17 age-matched TD controls. Individual

Voice disorders in children with oral motor dysfunction: perceptual evaluation pre and post oral motor therapy.

A few clinical investigations of children's voices have suggested a relation between voice deviation and oral motor and sensory dysfunction. This motivated the present retrospective study of the occurrence of voice disorders in a group of children with oral motor problems. A further aim was to evaluate the effect of an oral motor and articulatory treatment programme upon voice function in this patient group. Subjects were 38 children with oral motor deficits who had received and finished therapy at the clinic. The recordings of a picture naming task, before onset of therapy and at therapy endi

Visual statistical learning and integration of perceptual priors are intact in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in visual statistical learning and predictive processing could in principle explain the key characteristics of inattention and distractibility in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Specifically, from a Bayesian perspective, ADHD may be associated with flatter likelihoods (increased sensory processing noise), and/or difficulties in generating or using predictions. To our knowledge, such hypotheses have never been directly tested. METHODS: We here test these hypotheses by evaluating whether adults diagnosed with ADHD (n = 17) differed from a control group (n =

Auditory Stream Segregation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Benefits and Downsides of Superior Perceptual Processes.

Auditory stream segregation allows us to organize our sound environment, by focusing on specific information and ignoring what is unimportant. One previous study reported difficulty in stream segregation ability in children with Asperger syndrome. In order to investigate this question further, we used an interleaved melody recognition task with children in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this task, a probe melody is followed by a mixed sequence, made up of a target melody interleaved with a distractor melody. These two melodies have either the same [0 semitone (ST)] or a different mean

Perceptual and emotional processing deficits in severe alcohol use disorder: The role of spatial frequency.

Emotional facial expression decoding deficits are consistently reported in severe Alcohol Use Disorder (sAUD), hampering social interactions and promoting relapse. Individuals with sAUD also exhibit visuo-perceptive deficits, persisting despite abstinence. However, these two key impairments of sAUD have never been considered simultaneously. We explored the role of perception in emotional facial expression processing by directly manipulating the spatial frequency content of emotional faces. Thirty-one patients and 30 matched healthy controls performed emotion detection, discrimination, and labe

From Screening to Precision: Searching for Voice Disorder-Specific Acoustic and Auditory-Perceptual Metrics.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic and auditory-perceptual parameters are common tools for screening clinically significant voice disorders. However, the potential for disorder-specific acoustic signatures that support clinical differential diagnosis remains largely unrealized. Additionally, the robustness of acoustic patterns across different speech materials requires clarification to inform flexible, evidence-based clinical protocols and emerging machine learning applications. METHODS: This study investigated disorder-specific metrics and speech material consistency using the Perceptual Voice Qualities D

Perceptual processing advantages for trauma-related visual cues in post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intrusive re-experiencing in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comprises distressing sensory impressions from the trauma that seem to occur 'out of the blue'. A key question is how intrusions are triggered. One possibility is that PTSD is characterized by a processing advantage for stimuli that resemble those that accompanied the trauma, which would lead to increased detection of such cues in the environment. METHOD: We used a blurred picture identification task in a cross-sectional (n=99) and a prospective study (n=221) of trauma survivors. RESULTS: Participants with acute s

Fibromyalgia as a disorder of perceptual organization? An analysis of acoustic stimulus processing in patients with widespread pain.

We examined to what extent patients with fibromyalgia differ from painfree control subjects in the perception and processing not only of somatosensory but also of external stimuli. For this purpose the acoustic perception of 30 patients with fibromyalgia was compared with that of 36 generally pain-free age and gender matched subjects. The groups were also controlled for organic disease of pathological dysfunction of the ear and auditory nerves. Thresholds of unpleasantness and hearing thresholds were determined autiometrically for various frequencies. In addition the participants rated their e
