This article presents a comprehensive dataset containing two types of similarity measures for 23 Mandarin consonant phonemes: perceptual and featural measures. The perceptual measures are derived from confusion matrices obtained through native speakers' identification tasks in quiet and noise-masked conditions. Specific perceptual measures, including confusion rate and perceptual distance, are calculated based on these matrices. Additionally, a phonological feature system is proposed to evaluate the featural differences between each pair of consonants, providing insights into phonological simi

Face masks occlude parts of the face which hinders social communication and emotion recognition. Since sign language users are known to process facial information not only perceptually but also linguistically, examining face processing in deaf signers may reveal how linguistic aspects add to perceptual information. In general, signers could be born deaf or acquire hearing loss later in life. For this study, we focused on signers who were born deaf. Specifically, we analyzed data from a sample of 59 signers who were born deaf and investigated the impacts of face masks on non-linguistic characte

Schizophrenia, it has been proposed, is associated with deficits in the magnocellular part of the visual system. In support of this suggestion, it has been claimed that schizophrenic subjects have abnormal backward masking. However, if this abnormality is to be linked specifically to magnocellular defects, then it must be specific to backward masking, and not, also effect, for example, forward masking. We examined this issue by reviewing the studies of masking in schizophrenic subjects. We find: (i) Most studies (56 out of 67) of backward masking have researched only backward masking. This mak

Backward masking deficits have been put forward as potential psychological markers for vulnerability to schizophrenia. This study was conducted to investigate whether schizophrenic patients improve their performance on a backward masking task during a single test session. The ability of a degraded stimulus version of the masking task to act as a specific diagnostic marker for paranoid schizophrenia (versus affective disorder) was also investigated. The backward masking task was performed on 18 paranoid schizophrenic patients, 18 unipolar depressed patients, and 18 non-psychiatric controls. Par

It is widely accepted that most developmental dyslexics perform poorly on tasks which assess phonological awareness. One reason for this association might be that the early or "input" phonological representations of speech sounds are distorted or noisy in some way. We have attempted to test this hypothesis directly. In Experiment 1, we measured the confusions that adult dyslexics and controls made when they listened to nine randomly presented consonant-vowel (CV) segments [sequence: see text] under four conditions of increasing white noise masking. Subjects could replay stimuli and were under

OBJECTIVES: Masked speech recognition is typically assessed as though the target and background talkers are all directly facing the listener. However, background speech in natural environments is often produced by talkers facing other directions, and talker head orientation affects the spectral content of speech, particularly at the extended high frequencies (EHFs; >8 kHz). This study investigated the effect of masker head orientation and listeners' EHF sensitivity on speech-in-speech recognition and spatial release from masking in children and adults.
DESIGN: Participants were 5- to 7-year-o

Part of the detrimental effect caused by a stationary noise on sound perception results from the masking of relevant amplitude modulations (AM) in the signal by random intrinsic envelope fluctuations arising from the filtering of noise by cochlear channels. This study capitalizes on this phenomenon to probe AM detection strategies for human listeners using a reverse correlation analysis. Eight normal-hearing listeners were asked to detect the presence of a 4-Hz sinusoidal AM target applied to a 1-kHz tone carrier using a yes-no task with 3000 trials/participant. All stimuli were embedded in a

BACKGROUND: There are many counseling and sound therapy approaches to treat tinnitus. Counseling approaches range from providing information using directive or collaborative approaches. Sound therapies include strategies that use background sounds to totally or partially mask tinnitus to reduce the prominence of or decrease the loudness or annoyance of the tinnitus.
PURPOSE: We evaluated the effectiveness of tinnitus activities treatment (TAT) in two groups, those without hearing aids (HA) and those who were provided with HA. In both groups, comparisons were made among those receiving (1) cou

Chronic tinnitus is the persistent sensation of hearing a sound that exists only inside the head. The prevalence of tinnitus in adults in the United States is estimated at 10 to 15%. For about 20% of these individuals the tinnitus is significantly bothersome. Although myriad therapies for tinnitus are offered (often at significant cost), most are not evidence based. Difficulty in the assessment and further development of interventions for tinnitus stems from the limitations of techniques used to evaluate these interventions. Questionnaires are widely available to "measure" (tinnitus can only b

A masking level difference (MLD) paradigm was used to investigate the influence of stimulus envelope and stimulus fine-structure characteristics on monaural and binaural hearing. The degree of masker envelope fluctuation was manipulated by selecting narrow-band noises (50 Hz) on a continuum of values of the normalized fourth moment of the envelope. The noises were specified as low-noise noise (LNN), medium-noise noise (MNN), and high-noise noise (HNN). Fine-structure cues were studied by measuring thresholds at 500 and 4000 Hz, regions in which the availability of such cues to the auditory sys

A method to measure the speech intelligibility in public address systems for normal hearing and hearing impaired persons is presented. The proposed metric is an extension of the speech based Speech Transmission Index to account for accurate perceptual masking and variable hearing ability: The sound excitation pattern generated at the ear is accurately computed using an auditory filter model, and its shapes depend on frequency, sound level, and hearing impairment. This extension yields a better prediction of the intensity of auditory masking which is used to rectify the modulation transfer func

Camouflage is often assumed to fail once prey move, yet theory predicts that rapid motion can reduce detectability through flicker fusion camouflage (FFC), where high-contrast patterns blur into perceptual uniformity. We tested this prediction using retinal tracking in the jumping spider Menemerus bivittatus, a predator with a highly modular visual system. Using computer-generated stimuli varying in pattern, speed, size, and contrast, combined with anterior lateral eye (ALE) masking, we show that small, fast-moving thin stripes strongly suppressed retinal responsiveness. Low-contrast stripes f

This study investigates the extent to which the use of a face mask conveys linguopalatal contact changes during speech production. Electropalatographic data from five Catalan speakers were collected for different consonants, i.e., the alveolar stop [n], the alveolopalatal stop [n] and the palatal approximant [j], in the sequences [iCi] and [aCe]. Results for [n] indicate more closure retraction in the mask versus nonmask condition occurring presumably when the mask is pressed forcefully against the face in front of the mouth. The use of the mask for [n] and [j] causes an increase in dorsopalat

Motion-sensitive neurons in anuran optic tectum were shown to respond to a stationary object centered in the excitatory receptive field, if a textured background moved for a while and then stopped ('motion after-response'). This motion after-response was attributed to a post-inhibitory rebound activation derived from effects of masking the excitatory receptive field center surrounded by an antagonistic inhibitory region. It was suggested that a similar rebound activation mechanism may also be involved in a certain type of perceptual motion after-effects in humans.

Previous studies showed that the lateral masking of a fast-moving low spatial frequency (SF) target was strong when exerted by static flankers of lower or equal to the target SF and absent when flankers' SF was higher than the target's one. These masking and unmasking effects have been interpreted as due to Magnocellular-Magnocellular (M-M) inhibition and Parvocellular-on-Magnocellular (P-M) disinhibitory coactivation, respectively. Based on the hypothesis that the balance between the two systems is perturbed in Developmental Dyslexia (DD), we asked whether dyslexic children (DDs) behaved diff

Accurately assessing the perceptual quality of ultra-high-definition (UHD) images degraded by real-world noise remains a formidable challenge in computer vision. Existing Blind Image Quality Assessment (BIQA) methods, typically tailored for synthetic distortions and low-resolution inputs, often fail to generalize to these complex real-world scenarios. To bridge this gap, we first establish a real-world Ultra-High-Definition Noisy Image Quality (UNIQ-5k) dataset, consisting of 4,759 UHD images with fine-grained perceptual annotations. Leveraging this foundation, we propose PINE, a novel noise-o

Theories of reading posit that decisions about "where" and "when" to move the eyes are driven by visual and linguistic factors, extracted from the perceptual span and word identification span, respectively. We tested this hypothesized dissociation by masking, outside of a visible window, either the spaces between the words (to assess the perceptual span, Experiment 1) or the letters within the words (to assess the word identification span, Experiment 2). We also investigated whether deaf readers' previously reported larger reading span was specifically linked to one of these spans. We analyzed

Visuospatial disorientation forces Alzheimer's disease patients to abandon independent activities. We found previously that limitations of ambulatory and vehicular navigation are linked to impaired visual motion processing in Alzheimer's disease. We now hypothesize that these perceptual impairments reflect temporal constraints on visual attention. We evaluated attentional, perceptual and neuropsychological capacities in 14 Alzheimer's disease patients and 12 age-matched older normal controls. The temporal dynamics of visual attention were measured using rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP)
