The mature spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. is filiform and tapered at both extremities. It possesses 2 axonemes of unequal length, showing the 9 + "1" pattern of Trepaxonemata. The anterior extremity exhibits a crest-like body. Thereafter, the crest-like body disappears, and the first axoneme is surrounded by a ring of cortical microtubules (about 27 units) that persist until the appearance of the second axoneme. This ring of cortical microtubules is characteristic only for species of Bothriocephalidea and represents a very useful phylogenetic character. The spermatozoon cytoplasm is slightl

This work comprises the first comparative study of the morphology and cytology of the sperm transmission organs in males of 14 species of viviparous clinid fishes (Clinidae, Blennioidei, Teleostei). The form and dimensions of these organs differ among the various species studied. The organs are composed of intra-abdominal ampullae, into which the sperm ducts and urinary bladder anchor, and an external protruding intromittent papilla used for insemination. The form of the ampullae differs among the various species, from pear-shaped to horseshoe-shaped. It increases in dimensions with increasing

Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. is described from the gall bladder of the goby Gobioides grahamae (Gobiidae) captured on the Paracauari River in Salvaterra, on Marajó Island, northern Brazil. A total of 50 G. grahamae specimens were analysed, and 15 (30%) were parasitised by the plasmodia and myxospore of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. Large plasmodia were observed floating in the bile. These plasmodia were flat, rounded, oval or elongated, and of varying sizes. The mature myxospores, found singly or in pairs, were 27.1 ± 2.7 (20.5-30.1) μm Length and 3.8 ± 0.2 (3.5-4.4) μm Width in the valvular view

During a survey of parasites of Percichthys trucha (Cuvier et Valenciennes) (Perciformes: Percichthyidae) in northwestern Patagonian lakes, a new dracunculoid of the family Guyanemidae was found parasitizing as adults the heart of the fish. This species belongs to the genus Pseudodelphis Adamson et Roth, 1990 by having deirids, glandular multinucleate oesophagus and anterior branch of the uterus, and by lacking caudal alae and a gubernaculum. Pseudodelphis limnicola sp. n. differs from Pseudodelphis oligocotti Adamson et Roth, 1990 by the number and distribution of the cephalic papillae, a mus

A new nematode species (Neoascarophis mariae n. sp.) is described based on specimens collected from the Argentine goatfish Mullus argentinae (Hubbs et Marini) from coastal waters off the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the genus, the new species belongs to the group of species with females that have the vulva near the posterior end of the body. Only males of Neoascarophis longispicula Moravec et Klimpel, 2009 are known and can be distinguished from those of the new species by their larger body, developed and somewhat dorsoventrally expanded flat inner part of the pseudolabia, bifurcate dei

Even though genetic aspects of some cichlids have been widely studied over the last decades, little is known about the genomic structure of Cichlidae when compared to the large number of species in the family. In this paper, the first chromosomal data for Cichlasoma sanctifranciscense Kullander, 1983 are presented and discussed based on cytotaxonomic and karyoevolutionary inferences on Cichlasomatini. All individuals shared a diploid number of 2n=48 distributed as 10sm+28st+10a and Ag-NORs on short arms of a submetacentric pair. Heterochromatin was detected at pericentromeric regions of most c

Pseudocapillaria moraveci sp. n. (Nematoda, Capillariidae) is described from the stomach of Gobius paganellus Linnaeus (Perciformes, Gobiidae) from rocky shores of the Vigo estuary (Northwest Atlantic coast of Spain). Scanning electron microscopy reveals the absence of a dorsal cuticular membrane interconnecting the caudal lobes of male, thus confirming the assignment of this new species to the nominotypical subgenus Pseudocapillaria Freitas, 1959. Pseudocapillaria moraveci can be easily differentiated from other marine congeneric species belonging to subgenera Pseudocapillaria and Ichthyocapi

INTRODUCTION: A new monogenean, Rhamnocercoides lambayequensis n. sp. (Dactylogyridea: Diplectanidae), is described based on the specimens collected from the gills of the Pacific kingcroaker Menticirrhus elongatus (Günther 1864) (Perciformes: Sciaenidae), a demersal fish endemic to Eastern Pacific, captured off the South American Pacific coast, Lambayeque Region, Peru.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Monogeneans were fixed in hot 4% formalin. Some monogeneans were transferred directly onto a slide in a drop of glycerin-ammonium picrate mixture (GAP). Others were mounted stained with Gomori's trichrome

The ovarian follicle of the Eurasian ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua) consists of a single oocyte surrounded by follicular cells, a basal lamina, and thecal cells. The growth of the oocyte during vitellogenesis and the ultrastructure and morphogenesis of its envelope are undescribed in this species. To address these issues, vitellogenic follicles were examined. The oocyte cytoplasm is divided into three compartments: the perinuclear compartment, the endoplasm (which contains yolk spheres and lipid droplets), and the periplasm. The components of the Balbiani body, including mitochondria with well-d

This study examined the histological and anatomical changes in the gonads of the common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus L., 1758), a member of the Sparidae family, collected from the Gulf of Antalya (36° 49' N, 30° 38' E; 36° 46' N, 31° 18' E), NE Mediterranean Sea. A total of 273 specimens were sampled monthly from the region. The gonads were immediately dissected and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formaldehyde for 24-48 h, followed by Bouin's solution for eight hours. They were then embedded in paraffin blocks after routine histological processing. Tissue Sect. (5 μm thick) were stained using he

This paper describes the ultrastructure of the male gamete of Glossobothrium sp. (Bothriocephalidea: Triaenophoridae). The mature spermatozoon of Glossobothrium sp. is filiform and possesses two axonemes, a single helicoidal crested body, a parallel nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules and granules of glycogen. In Glossobothrium sp. we describe for first time a 200-250 nm thick crest-like body in the Bothriocephalidean. The anterior part of the spermatozoon exhibits a ring of 27 electron-dense cortical microtubules encircling the first axoneme. This structure persists until the appearance o

Pseudorhabdosynochus kasetsartensis n. sp. is described from the gills of the cloudy grouper Epinephelus erythrurus (Valenciennes) caught in the lower Gulf of Thailand. The new species is distinguished from other species assigned to the genus by the structure of its sclerotised vagina which has a wide and prominent sclerotised trumpet, long, thin, coiled or curved primary canal, short secondary canal, and primary and secondary chambers that are blind extremities of the primary and secondary canals, respectively. This is the first species of Pseudorhabdosynochus Yamaguti, 1958 described from E.

We report two new monorchiids from two species of goatfishes (Mullidae), Mulloidichthys flavolineatus (Lacépède) and Mulloidichthys vanicolensis (Valenciennes), from off Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef. Morphological and molecular analyses indicate that the two species belong in the previously monotypic genera Obscuromonorchis Wee, Cribb, Miller & Cutmore, 2025 and Lobucirruatus Wee, Cribb & Cutmore, 2022. Obscuromonorchis brittanyae n. sp. is reported from both mullid species and differs from Obscuromonorchis ranae Wee, Cribb, Miller & Cutmore, 2025, in the possession of a less-dev

South African clinids are a major component of the temperate intertidal regions that are also known to participate in life cycles and transmission of several groups of parasites. However, the knowledge of trematode diversity of these fishes is incomplete. In this study, two species of Clinus Cuvier, the super klipfish Clinus superciliosus (Linnaeus) and the bluntnose klipfish Clinus cottoides Valenciennes, were collected from six localities along the South African coast and examined for the presence of trematodes. Metacercariae of Cardiocephaloides Sudarikov, 1959 were found in the eye vitreou

Gyrodactylus mojarrae n. sp. is described from the gills of the Neotropical cichlids Thorichthys maculipinnis, Rocio octofasciata, Vieja zonata and V. fenestrata from several localities across southern Mexico. The new species is erected on the basis of the morphology of the haptoral elements (anchors, bars and hooks), and its phylogenetic position within the Gyrodactylidae is evaluated based on the analysis of partial sequences of the ITS1, 5.8 rRNA gene and ITS2. Gyrodactylus mojarrae n. sp. differs from other congeneric species by having hooks with a straight shaft and recurved point, pointe

The Enenteridae Yamaguti, 1958 and Gyliauchenidae Fukui, 1929 exhibit an interesting pattern of host partitioning in herbivorous fishes of the Indo-West Pacific. Enenterids are known almost exclusively from fishes of the family Kyphosidae, a group of herbivorous marine fishes common on tropical and temperate reefs. In contrast, gyliauchenids are found in most of the remaining lineages of marine herbivorous fishes, but until the present study, had never been known from kyphosids. Here we report on the first species of gyliauchenid known from a kyphosid. Endochortophagus protoporus gen. nov., sp
