Deep Learning-Based Detection of Periodontal Infrabony and Furcation Defects on Periapical Radiographs: A Feasibility Study.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate radiographic detection and classification of periodontal osseous defects are essential for prognosis and surgical planning in regenerative periodontology. Traditional diagnostic methods offer limited morphological information, and interpretation can be operator-dependent. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have shown potential in medical image analysis, but their application to detailed classification of periodontal defects on periapical radiographs remains underexplored. METHODS: A total of 7464 periapical radiographs were retrospectively collected from th

Detecting calcified pulp stones in patients with periodontal diseases using digital panoramic and periapical radiographies.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pulp stones are discrete calcified masses appearing in the dental pulp of healthy, disease and unerupted teeth. They are presented freely within the pulp tissue or attached and embedded in any part of coronal and radicular dentin. Here, the purposes of this study were to identify the presence of pulp stones in periodontal patients using digital panoramic and periapical radiographies, and to determine the association with gender, age, tooth type and dental arch. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study on selected records of 465 dental samples obtained between J

Injectable and retrievable calcium salicylate hydrogel promotes sustained periapical bone regeneration in a beagle dog model of apical periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent apical periodontitis remains a clinical challenge requiring both effective disinfection and bone regeneration. This study tested the hypothesis that an injectable, retrievable F127-DMA/CASA hydrogel facilitates periapical bone healing by combining antimicrobial action with osteogenic induction. METHODS: Periapical lesions were induced in 18 single-rooted teeth of two beagle dogs. After the periapical lesions were confirmed, teeth were randomly assigned to three groups: F127-DMA/CASA, Ca(OH)2, or an untreated control. For the CASA and Ca(OH)2groups, intracanal medicame

A Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Exacerbates the Progression of Periapical Inflammation Through Modulating the Cytokine Release in Periodontal Tissue.

Menopause is directly related to a systemically low grade of inflammation, indicating that postmenopausal women might be more prone to the development of inflammation. The high levels of circulating follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) may cause hypogonadal bone loss during postmenopausal osteoporosis independent of estrogen. Previous research revealed that FSH could aggravate alveolar bone loss during experimental periapical lesions in ovariectomized rats; however, the mechanisms for these effects remain unclear. In this study, we showed that FSH enhanced the expression and secretion of the pro

Hypoxia Exacerbates Periapical Periodontitis-Associated Pathological Bone Loss via the Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-2α-Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase IV Axis.

Periapical periodontitis is one of the most common inflammatory bone destructive diseases. Epidemiological evidence suggests that hypoxia exposure, such as that resulting from high-altitude exposure or sleep apnea syndrome, may be a significant risk factor that exacerbates the disease process. However, its specific role and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established a mouse model of periapical periodontitis under conditions of chronic hypoxia to evaluate its impact on pathological bone loss using micro-computed tomography, histological staining, and serum
