Aging-related cognitive decline is closely associated with oxidative stress, cholinergic dysfunction and hippocampal vulnerability. Perilla seed oil (PSO), a functional food rich in α-linolenic acid and antioxidant phytochemicals, may have cognitive benefits; however, its efficacy and underlying mechanisms in experimental models of accelerated aging remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of PSO supplementation on cognitive performance and neurobiological alterations in a D-galactose (D-Gal)-induced accelerated aging model in rats. Wistar rats were

Perilla frutescens has been used in traditional medicine for respiratory diseases due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. This study aimed to investigate effects of Perilla frutescens leaf extract (PFE) on expression of pro-allergic and pro-inflammatory cytokines in airway epithelial cells exposed to mite major allergen Der p 2 (DP2) and the underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that PFE up to 100 µg/mL had no cytotoxic effect on human bronchial epithelial cell BEAS-2B. Further investigations revealed that PFE dose-dependently diminished mRNA expression of pro-allergic cy

Obesity is a growing global concern, and pancreatic lipase inhibitors have emerged as potential targets for antiobesity strategies. This study evaluates the potential of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton var. frutescens leaf tea as a pancreatic lipase inhibitor for managing dietary fat absorption. Perilla leaf tea significantly inhibited the pancreatic lipase-mediated hydrolysis of emulsified triglycerides, depending on its polyphenol and rosmarinic acid (RA) contents. However, the inhibitory effect diminished at higher concentrations, which coincided with the increased emulsion particle size. P

Perillae Folium, derived from the leaves of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., is recognized as both a medicinal substance and an edible ingredient in China, with its market demand steadily rising. The nutritional value of Perillae Folium varies markedly across different geographical origins, posing a constraint on its further industrial development. To date, there remains a paucity of robust and reliable approaches for tracing the geographical origin of Perillae Folium samples. This study employed headspace gas chromatography ion mobility spectrometry to profile VOCs in Perillae Folium, revealin

BACKGROUND: The pathogenicity of staphylococcus aureus is dependent largely upon its ability to secrete a number of virulence factors, therefore, anti-virulence strategy to combat S. aureus-mediated infections is now gaining great interest. It is widely recognized that some plant essential oils could affect the production of staphylococcal exotoxins when used at subinhibitory concentrations. Perilla [Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton], a natural medicine found in eastern Asia, is primarily used as both a medicinal and culinary herb. Its essential oil (perilla oil) has been previously demonstrate

Perillae Herba (a leaf of Perilla frutescens) has been prescribed as one of the component herbs in certain Kampo (Japanese herbal) medicines that are used clinically for the improvement of depressive mood. l-Perillaldehyde (PAH) is a major component in the essential oil containing in Perillae Herba, but its antidepressant-like effect has not been reported. To clarify the antidepressant-like effect of PAH, the inhaled effect of PAH on stress-induced depression-like model mice prepared by subjection to a combination of forced swimming and chronic mild stresses was investigated. The degree of the

Salicylic acid (SA) and methyl salicylate (MeSA) are synthesized in many plants and are crucial components that establish their disease responses. The metabolism of airborne MeSA to SA has been previously reported. In this report, it was found that SA glucose ester (SAGE), ether (SAG), and salicyloyl-L-aspartic acid (SA-Asp) are metabolites of airborne MeSA. Furthermore, it was found that airborne MeSA was able to increase the endogenous amount of rosmarinic acid in Perilla frutescens, which is known as one of the functional components that contributes to the maintenance of human health.

BACKGROUND: In Western countries functional dyspepsia (FD) has a prevalence of 10-20% among adults and although many drugs are currently available for use within clinical practice, FD remains an important challenge for physicians. Recently, food supplements that are ginger-based, along with other botanicals, have been proposed to be a possible natural alternative to pharmaceutical drugs to empirically counteract the symptoms of FD.
METHODS: We have therefore retrospectively analyzed the efficacy and safety profiles of a nutraceutical containing, in addition to a highly standardized ginger roo

The extract and volatile oil of zisu (Perilla frutescens) has shown significant antipyretic effect in rabbits and antiemetic effect in pigeons. The fatty oil extracted from its seeds has significant antitussive effect in mice and anti-asthmatic effect in guinea pigs. The extract, volatile oil and fatty oil of Baisu, which is of the same genus as Zisu have the same effects as those of Zisu. The acute toxicities of the extract and fatty oil of Zisu and Baisu, whether by peroral or by intraperitoneal, are similar to each other. These results indicate that Baisu has the same pharmacological effect
