Multi-disciplinary treatment of severe palatal radicular groove of maxillary lateral incisor: A case report and literature review.

Palatal radicular groove is a developmental malformation of maxillary incisors, lateral incisors in particular, which often causes periodontal destruction. This paper reports a case of combined periodontal-endodontic lesions induced by palatal radicular groove, which was initially misdiagnosed as a simple periapical cyst. After root canal therapy and periapical cyst curettage, the course of disease was prolonged, resulting in the absence of buccal and maxillary bone plates in the affected tooth area. After the etiology was determined, the affected tooth was extracted and guide bone tissue rege

Cerebral abscess of odontogenic origin.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral abscess is a rare but serious and life-threatening infection. Dental infections have occasionally been reported as the source of bacteria for such an abcess. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 54-year-old man was admitted with a right hemiparesis and epileptic fits. After clinical, laboratory and imaging examination, the diagnosis of a cerebral abscess of the left parietal lobe was made. The intraoral clinical examination as well as a panoramic radiograph confirmed the presence of generalized periodontal disease, multiple dental caries, and periapical pathology. The treatment inclu

Clinical Differential Diagnosis between Nonodontogenic and Endodontic Radiolucent Lesions in Periapical Location: A Critical Review.

In endodontics, accurate diagnoses are important for the selection of appropriate and successful therapy. Several nonendodontic entities in periapical location may resemble those of inflammatory endodontic origin and impact therapeutic approaches. The aim of this study was to review noninflammatory entities mimicking dentoalveolar abscesses or apical periodontitis and to discuss clinical and pathological features. In this review study, the authenticated search engine in PubMed (MEDLINE) database was used to find articles by using "Nonvital Pulp Dentoalveolar Abscess", "Nonvital Pulp And Apical

Lung Abscess Caused by Tannerella forsythia Infection: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Tannerella forsythia is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium commonly found in the oral cavity. It is among the common pathogenic bacteria associated with gingivitis, chronic periodontitis, and aggressive periodontitis. However, there is currently no literature discussing lung abscesses primarily caused by T. forsythia infection. PRESENTATION: This article presents the case of a 55-year-old male with a massive lung abscess. The patient underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage, and the sample was sent for pathogen metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) testing. The t

The characteristics of hospital emergency department visits made by people with mental health conditions who had dental problems.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of knowledge regarding nationally representative estimates of hospital-based emergency department (ED) visits for dental problems made by people with mental health conditions. The authors conducted a study to provide nationwide estimates of hospital-based ED visits attributed to dental caries, pulpal and periapical lesions, gingival and periodontal lesions and mouth cellulitis/abscess made by people with mental health conditions. METHODS: The authors used the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample, which is a component of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Proj

A study of C-reactive protein, lipid metabolism and peripheral blood to identify a link between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.

Periodontitis is characterized by systemic inflammatory host responses that may contribute to a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that periodontitis may be associated with altered C-reactive protein levels, serum levels of lipids and peripheral blood counts, and that these characteristics may serve as markers for a link between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease. Sixty subjects, 25-60 years old, were divided into three groups of 20 subjects each. Group 1, age and sex matched healthy controls; group 2, patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis; group 3, patients

Red Complex Bacteria as a Hidden Cause of Chronic Lung Abscess: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Common oral pathogens such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia, which form biofilms in the periodontal pockets, are classified together as Red Complex bacteria in Socransky's subgingival cluster model and are key pathogenic bacteria in periodontitis. Oral pathogens play a critical role in pulmonary infections, particularly in the pathogenesis of lung abscesses. Lung abscesses caused by Red Complex bacteria have rarely been described; to our knowledge, few cases have been reported to date. CASE REPORT We present the first documented case of chro

Acute periodontal lesions.

This review provides updates on acute conditions affecting the periodontal tissues, including abscesses in the periodontium, necrotizing periodontal diseases and other acute conditions that cause gingival lesions with acute presentation, such as infectious processes not associated with oral bacterial biofilms, mucocutaneous disorders and traumatic and allergic lesions. A periodontal abscess is clinically important because it is a relatively frequent dental emergency, it can compromise the periodontal prognosis of the affected tooth and bacteria within the abscess can spread and cause infection

Prevalence and clonal analysis of Porphyromonas gingivalis in primary endodontic infections.

This study investigated the prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in 62 teeth with primary endodontic infections by using a species-specific 16S rRNA gene-based nested polymerase chain reaction assay. P. gingivalis isolates recovered from 2 infected root canals were also analyzed for clonal diversity by using arbitrarily primed PCR. Overall, P. gingivalis was found in 48% of the samples. This species was specifically detected in 36% of canals of teeth with chronic apical periodontitis, in 46% of the cases of acute apical periodontitis, and in 67% of acute apical abscesses. P. gingivalis was s

Antibiotics and Antimicrobials for Treatment of the Oral Microbiota: Myths and Facts in Research and Clinical Practice.

In the dental field, the most common oral diseases include periodontitis, apical periodontitis, abscesses, phlegmons and pulpits, all of which are determined by the same aetiological factor, bacterial infections. For these reasons, it is important to choose the right approach through a target antibiotic therapy against oral bacteria. More specifically, during periodontitis, antibiotics are used, often in association with periodontal debridement, to reduce disease-associated periodontopathogens. However, international guidelines are not unanimous in recommending the use of local and/or systemic

[Microbial and resistance spectrum of jaw infections].

According to this investigation, antibiotic treatment of odontogenous abcesses should be directed primarily against streptococcus and staphylococcus, even if gram-negative pathogens have apparently increased. The response on the part of streptococcus to antibiotics has not changed essentially during the last five years. Staphylococcus however has developed a resistance to penicillin and ampicillin.
