BACKGROUND: Periodontitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are chronic inflammatory conditions that share several common risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, and socioeconomic factors. Previous studies have reported associations between periodontal disease and cardiovascular outcomes; however, most investigations have relied on composite periodontal case definitions. Interproximal clinical attachment loss (iCAL) represents a direct clinical indicator of cumulative periodontal destruction. This study aimed to investigate the association between personal and family history of CVD and perio

This study aims to determine whether gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) cathepsin B levels, total activity (TA) and concentration (EC) predict progressive attachment loss (AL). Seventy-five previously untreated patients with moderate periodontitis were recruited. GCF was collected from 16 molar and premolar mesiobuccal sites and probing attachment level (PAL) and probing depth (PPD) were measured with an electronic probe. Gingival, gingival bleeding and plaque indices were then scored. Prior to baseline patients were given basic periodontal treatment after which the above procedures were repeated

The Gram-positive bacterium, Filifactor alocis is an oral pathogen, and approximately 50% of known strains encode a recently identified repeat-in-toxin (RTX) protein, FtxA. By assessing a longitudinal Ghanaian study population of adolescents (10-19 years of age; mean age 13.2 years), we recently discovered a possible correlation between deep periodontal pockets measured at the two-year follow-up, presence of the ftxA gene, and a high quantity of F. alocis. To further understand the contribution of F. alocis and FtxA in periodontal disease, we used qPCR in the present study to assess the carria

Periodontal attachment loss is mediated by overproduction of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin (IL)-1, and appears to have a genetic component. The 8.1 major histocompatibility complex (MHC) ancestral haplotype (HLA-A1,B8,TNFA-308(2),DR3) is associated with elevated TNF production and predisposes carriers to several autoimmune/immunopathological disorders, including rapid progression of HIV disease, but not early onset periodontal disease in healthy individuals. Rather a high proportion of subjects with severe periodontal disease carry allele 2 at IL-1A-889 and IL-1B+3953. We predic

Periodontal conditions were assessed by CPITN and loss of attachment in 601 elderly people randomly selected in Kitakyushu, Japan. The percentage of edentulous persons was 21 per cent, 38 per cent and 65 per cent in the 65-74 year, 75-84 year and 85 years and older groups, respectively. In dentate persons, over 60 per cent had pocket probing depths of 4mm or more; in the majority loss of attachment did not exceed 5mm. The mean numbers of sextants with pocket probing depths of 4-5mm (CPITN 3) and probing depths of 6mm and more (CPITN 4) were similar in each age group. The mean numbers of sextan

OBJECTIVES: The therapeutic effects of doxycycline and other tetracyclines in the treatment of periodontitis involve, at least in part, mechanisms that are unrelated to their antimicrobial activity. Previous clinical studies have shown that doxycycline administered orally, at doses below those needed for antimicrobial efficacy, to human subjects with adult periodontitis resulted in significantly reduced collagenase activity in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and in extracts of inflamed gingival tissues. The purpose of the present study was to identify clinically effective dosing regimens using

AIM: The aim of this 5-years longitudinal study was to investigate the pattern and rate of periodontal attachment loss (PAL) progression in an urban population in South Brazil.
METHODS: In 2001, a multistage probability sampling strategy was used to derive a representative sample of 1,465 dentate individuals from Porto Alegre, Brazil. Five years later, 697 dentate individuals (294M/403F, mean age: 37.9 ± 13.3) were available for follow-up. PAL was assessed by calibrated examiners using a full-mouth protocol. Estimates of proximal PAL progression and standard errors (SE) are reported.

BACKGROUND, AIMS: Periodontal disease is a significant cause of tooth loss among adults and is characterized by the alteration and permanent destruction of the deeper periodontal tissues. Although the presence of pathologic microbes is required to trigger this process, the amplification and progression of the diseased state is believed to rely heavily on the production of host mediators in response to bacteria or their metabolic products. The inflammatory response is effective in preventing large-scale colonization of the gingival tissues by bacteria that lie in close proximity to the tooth su

Immunological data have been suggested to be a potential tool in the diagnosis, classification and monitoring of periodontal diseases. However, the role of circulating antibodies in periodontal patients is poorly understood. Patients suffering from localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) are often reported to show high titers of serum IgG antibodies against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans), but several affected patients do not. Most studies use well-known reference strains of the bacterium for testing against the patients' sera. The aim of the present investigatio

OBJECTIVES: The paleopathological study of the skeletal remains belonging to Cardinal Carlo de' Medici (1595-1666), son of Ferdinando I (1549-1609) and Cristina of Lorena (1565-1637), has been presented previously. A diagnosis of Klippel-Feil syndrome, tuberculosis and a polyarthopathy, interpreted as rheumatoid arthritis, was suggested. A revision of this case based on the analysis of the historical documents and of some radiological images of Carlo's bones has been proposed recently; according to the Authors, the Cardinal was affected by the 'Medici syndrome', a combined Psoriatic-DISH arthr

Recordings of supragingival plaque, bleeding, suppuration and probing depth were obtained for 42 months following initial periodontal therapy. Scores accumulated after various time intervals during monitoring were studied for their predictive value in revealing probing attachment loss as determined by regression analysis during the 0-42 month period. Accumulated plaque scores demonstrated low predictability. Accumulated bleeding scores showed modest predictive values. Suppuration on probing was not a frequent finding during the observation interval and also had modest predictive power. Increas

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the extent of clinical attachment loss (CAL) as a clinical parameter in the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in non-surgical management of stage II-IV grade C molar-incisor pattern Periodontitis. This review protocol was conducted in accordance with PRISMA statements and is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022321211). An electronic and manual search was conducted for relevant articles comparing the efficacy of aPDT versus scaling and root planning (SRP) alone or with amoxicillin/metronidazole (AMX/MET) published up until

BACKGROUND: Treatment of diabetes includes oral antidiabetic drugs (OAD), insulin, or their combinations. Insulin can achieve faster glycemic control and have anabolic action on bone. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence and severity of periodontitis, and to estimate the proportional relationship between periodontal inflamed surface area, clinical attachment loss, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) on OAD therapy and on insulin therapy.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 130 patients with T2DM on OAD therapy (OAD group) and 1

BACKGROUND: Clinical attachment level is the most frequently used and acceptable parameter in monitoring periodontal status in diseased individual and denotes patterns of periodontal destruction. Awareness of root morphology and the condition of the periodontal tissues is essential for reliable periodontal pocket probing and for effective debridement of root surfaces. Clinically, it is challenging to observe exact nature of complex periodontal attachment loss. The aim of the present study was to evaluate patterns of periodontal destruction based on vertical and horizontal attachment loss.
