Conservative approach in the management of radicular cyst in a child: case report.

Radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cystic lesion of inflammatory origin. It is also known as periapical cyst, apical periodontal cyst, root end cyst, or dental cyst. It arises from epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament as a result of inflammation. The inflammation usually follows the death of dental pulp. This paper presents a case report of a patient with radicular cyst associated with a primary molar.

Biochemical markers as predictors of bone remodelling in dental disorders: a narrative description of literature.

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease in which the skeletal condition is characterized by a decreased mass of normally mineralized bone, due to an augmentation of bone resorption processes. Bone biomarkers serum are used for the diagnosis. On the other hand the main cause of the resorption in the bone jaws are periodontitis, inflammatory cysts, developmental cysts, odontogenic neoplasms. Periodontal diseases can be localized to a single site of the jaws or can affect all the teeth, with a massive bone resorption. The cysts are classified in developmental and inflammatory. They caused a local bone

Radicular Cyst: The Sequelae of Untreated Caries.

A radicular cyst is characterized as an odontogenic cyst of inflammatory origin that develops from Malassez epithelial rests in the periodontal ligament as the consequence of dental pulp inflammation. The cyst commenced in the carious tooth and spread to the periodontal and periapical regions. The majority of these lesions appear as precise radiolucencies and encompass their entire apex. The cystic lesion, which is also called a root-end cyst or periapical cyst, is sometimes referred to as a true cyst because it is lined by fluid epithelium. There are several treatment options to address radic

Radicular Cyst: A Cystic Lesion Involving the Hard Palate.

A radicular cyst, also known as a periapical cyst or root end cyst, is a type of odontogenic cyst that is typically associated with permanent teeth. The radicular cyst usually is associated with maxillary central incisors followed by mandibular first molars. It occurs as a result of bacterial infection and pulpal necrosis which leads to inflammatory stimulation of the epithelial cell rests of Malassez along the periodontal ligament area of the tooth. Most cases of the radicular cyst are asymptomatic and they are diagnosed accidentally during routine radiographic examination. This article prese

Epithelial jaw cysts: 10 years of the WHO classification.

Numerous papers on epithelial jaw cysts have appeared in the decade since the publication in 1971 of the WHO histological classification of odontogenic tumours, jaw cysts, and allied lesions. Despite clarification of certain cyst varieties no major revisions are necessary. The following minor modifications are proposed. In the developmental odontogenic group, the terms keratocyst and follicular are preferred to primordial and dentigerous. The alveolar cyst of infants is categorised separately from the gingival cyst of adults. The developmental lateral periodontal cyst is included as a distinct

Evidence for fibroblasts as the major source of prostacyclin and prostaglandin synthesis in dental cyst in man.

Periodontal cysts synthesize large amounts of prostaglandins and collagenase which probably cause the localized bone destruction essential for intraosseous cyst growth. Fragments of cyst wall, and fibroblasts cultured from them, synthesized prostacyclin (PGI2) in addition to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), PGF2 alpha and collagenase in vitro. Soluble products from cultures of unstimulated and phytohaemagglutinin-stimulated blood mononuclear cells enhanced the synthesis of these prostaglandins in monolayer cultures of cyst-wall fibroblasts. It is therefore proposed that cyst capsule fibroblasts are th

Differences in Inflammation and Bone Resorption between Apical Granulomas, Radicular Cysts, and Dentigerous Cysts.

INTRODUCTION: Dental cysts can be of inflammatory (radicular cysts) or noninflammatory (dentigerous cysts) origin. Apical periodontitis is a necrosis of the pulp and infection of the root canal causing the development of apical granulomas or radicular cysts. The immunology of granuloma and cyst formation is important because modern root filling materials are immunologically active and can contribute to the resolution of apical granulomas. In contrast, radicular cysts often require apicectomy. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of inflammation and bone resorption in apical periodonti

Nucleolar organiser regions in odontogenic cysts and ameloblastomas.

Silver nucleolar organiser region (AgNOR) counts were performed on apical periodontal cysts, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas and basal cell carcinomas. Significant differences, but with excessive overlap, were shown between dentigerous cysts and apical periodontal cysts and between odontogenic keratocysts and apical cysts. The mean AgNOR counts for all odontogenic cysts ranged between 2.02 and 2.65, and for ameloblastomas were 2.24, indicating that the method has neither a diagnostic nor a prognostic value in these lesions. Multi-disciplinary treatment of severe palatal radicular groove of maxillary lateral incisor: A case report and literature review.

Palatal radicular groove is a developmental malformation of maxillary incisors, lateral incisors in particular, which often causes periodontal destruction. This paper reports a case of combined periodontal-endodontic lesions induced by palatal radicular groove, which was initially misdiagnosed as a simple periapical cyst. After root canal therapy and periapical cyst curettage, the course of disease was prolonged, resulting in the absence of buccal and maxillary bone plates in the affected tooth area. After the etiology was determined, the affected tooth was extracted and guide bone tissue rege

[Incidence of radicular cysts in a series of 125 chronic periapical lesions. Histopathologic study].

The incidence of radicular cysts in 125 chronic periapical lesions was studied in 36 cases of periapical surgery (28.8%), and to 89 tooth extractions (71.2%). Histopathology revealed 18 radicular cysts (14.4%) and 107 lesions corresponding to chronic apical periodontitis (C.A.P.) or granulomas (85.6%). Cholesterol clefts, a fibrous capsule and presence of a cavity were more common in the cysts, significant differences being observed with respect to chronic apical periodontitis.

Respiratory Epithelium Lined Cyst of the Maxilla: Differential Diagnosis.

Maxillary cysts, including the cysts lined by respiratory epithelium, can present a diagnostic challenge. We report an unusual case of a maxillary cyst on an endodontically treated tooth #16, in which the cavity was totally lined by a respiratory epithelium. The patient, a 35-year-old male, presented with a generalized chronic periodontitis and complained of a pain in the tooth #16 region. A periodontal pocket extending to the root apices with pus coming out from the gingival was found. A combined endodontic periodontal was observed on a panoramic radiography. CBCT-scan revealed a well-circums

Ciliated epithelium-lined radicular cysts.

OBJECTIVE: This report describes 3 cases of ciliated epithelium-lined radicular cysts among 256 apical periodontitis lesions and also illustrates the occurrence of an Actinomyces-infected periapical cyst. STUDY DESIGN: Serial and step serial sections of 256 plastic-embedded root apices with attached apical periodontitis lesions that were prepared for a previous investigation were reviewed for the presence of ciliated epithelium-lined radicular cysts. The lesions that were found to have such epithelial lining were examined in a transmission electron microscope to elaborate the fine structure o

The rôle of immunological reactions in apical cyst formation and the fate of epithelial cells after root canal therapy: a theory.

Activation of the epithelial cell rests of Malassez by various means, results in proliferation of these cells and formation of apical periodontal cysts. Several theories for the genesis of apical periodontal cysts have been suggested which are not satisfactory. Available evidence indicates that development and destruction of these lesions are mediated by immunological reactions.

Inverted heart-shaped, interradicular radiolucent area of the anterior maxilla.

A variety of odontogenic, nonodontogenic, and inflammatory conditions may occur between the roots of the maxillary canine and lateral incisor. A list of differential diagnoses might include: odontogenic keratocyst, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic myxoma, primordial cyst, lateral periodontal cyst, ameloblastoma, and radicular cyst. A diagnosis of globulomaxillary cyst should be noticeably absent from the list, however, and should be considered only after clinical radiographic, and microscopic correlation has effectively ruled out all other possibilities.

[Botryoid odontogenic cyst].

INTRODUCTION: The botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC) is a developmental cyst of odontogenic epithelial origin considered as a rare multilocular variety of lateral periodontal cyst (WHO 1992). This cystic lesion site is in the periodontal space of vital teeth. OBSERVATION: A 21-year-old woman consulted for a swelling of the anterior maxillary region. The clinical examination revealed bucal swelling extending from the left central incisor to the first left premolar. The mucosa was normal. The adjacent teeth were vital. X-ray revealed a bilocular radiolucency extending between the roots of teeth 21

Eruption cyst formation associated with cyclosporin A.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporin A (CyA) is a potent immunomodulatory agent with a wide range of applications. Despite its therapeutic value, multiple adverse effects of CyA have been identified. This case report describes eruption cyst formation as a possible adverse effect of CyA administration during tooth eruption in a boy treated with CyA as a consequence of a cardiac transplantation. The clinical diagnosis of eruption cyst was confirmed by histopathological examination. TREATMENT: The periodontal treatment consisted of supragingival and subgingival scaling, followed by surgical removal of the ti

Nonsurgical root canal therapy of large cyst-like inflammatory periapical lesions and inflammatory apical cysts.

It is a general belief that large cyst-like periapical lesions and apical true cysts caused by root canal infection are less likely to heal after nonsurgical root canal therapy. Nevertheless, there is no direct evidence to support this assumption. A large cyst-like periapical lesion or an apical true cyst is formed within an area of apical periodontitis and cannot form by itself. Therefore, both large cyst-like periapical lesions and apical true cysts are of inflammatory and not of neoplastic origin. Apical periodontitis lesions, regardless of whether they are granulomas, abscesses, or cysts,
