Supracrestal Non-Surgical Therapy in Periodontal Diseases.

Periodontal diseases are the complex disease with a dynamic relationship between biofilm and the host immunoinflammatory response. The goal of periodontal therapy is to preserve the natural dentition and increase their longevity by creation of a favorable environment around the teeth. The mainstay to achieve this is by the non-surgical periodontal therapy, followed by surgical and other recent treatment modalities. However, there seems no sure indication to choose amongst them that are clinically significant and offer long term predictability. We report here two cases that had supracrestal def

Investigation of hemorheological parameters in periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are frequently associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). On the other hand, occurrence of CVD has also been related with increased blood viscosity. This study was planned to investigate four main hemorheological parameters contributing to blood viscosity - hematocrit, erythrocyte deformability, erythrocyte aggregation and plasma viscosity - and also some biochemical parameters (hs-CRP, fibrinogen, globulin etc.) in patients with periodontal disease. We hypothesized that poor periodontal health would be associated with deterioration of hemorheological properties. Accor

Correlation of mast cells in periodontal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Among the cells involved in immune and inflammatory responses in periodontal disease, mast cells have been shown to be capable of generating a large number of biologically active substances. Mast cells are mobile, bone-marrow-derived, granule-containing immune cells that are found in all connective tissue and mucosal environments and in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Mast cells are able to phagocytose, process and present antigens as effectively as macrophages. The present study was undertaken to quantify the mast cells in health and disease, whether they correlate deg

Acceleration of purine degradation by periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, are characterized by bacterial plaque accumulation around the gingival crevice and the subsequent inflammation and destruction of host tissues. To test the hypothesis that cellular metabolism is altered as a result of host-bacteria interaction, we performed an unbiased metabolomic profiling of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) collected from healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis sites in humans, by liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The purine degradation pathway, a major biochemical source for reactive oxygen species (RO

Epidemiology and risk factors of periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory disorders encompassing destructive and nondestructive diseases of the periodontal supporting tissues of teeth. Gingivitis is a nondestructive disease ubiquitous in populations of children and adults globally. Aggressive periodontitis is characterized by severe and rapid loss of periodontal attachment often commencing at or after the circumpubertal age and is more prevalent among Latin Americans and subjects of African descent, and least common among Caucasians. Chronic periodontitis is a common disease and may occur in most age groups, but is most

Using antimicrobial agents to manage periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections and anti-microbials have been shown to be useful in their treatment and prevention. State-of-the-art treatment of refractory forms of destructive periodontal disease presently includes adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics directed to eliminating or suppressing pathogenic subgingival bacteria. Also, local application of antimicrobials by subgingival deposition or their use as irrigants during periodontal therapy are soon likely to be major components of anti-infective management of periodontal diseases. A new approach to anti-infective periodontal

Diagnosis and classification of the periodontal diseases.

A classification for gingivitis and periodontitis has been proposed based on clinical observations and immunologic parameters (summarized in Table 10). Overlapping clinical situations and exceptions to the rule certainly exist and pose challenges to clinicians during diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning. The clinical significance of making the diagnosis of either rapidly progressive periodontitis, juvenile, or prepubertal forms of periodontitis compared with adult periodontitis must be considered. A diagnosis of early-onset disease may (1) modify the periodontal treatment plan and may

Burden of periodontal diseases in young adults.

We aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the global burden of periodontal disease among young adults over the period from 1990 to 2019. The analysis considered various factors such as age, sex, country, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI). This study utilized GBD 2019 database to examine the trends in both incidence and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rates of periodontal diseases among young adults from 1990 to 2019. The data was analyzed based on age-standardization rate. To quantify the temporal and geographic patterns we calculated the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) a

Emerging Oral Nicotine Products and Periodontal Diseases.

Oral nicotine pouches are emerging as a new "modern oral" nicotine product. These prefilled pouches contain nicotine, flavorings, and filling agents that dissolve in the mouth. Nicotine can be derived from tobacco leaf or chemical synthesis. Traces of TSNAs and toxic chromium were detected in the pouch products. This raises the concern about general and periodontal health. This review aims to update the current oral nicotine products research relating to periodontal disease and its relevance in periodontal inflammation. Nicotine interacts with host cells and affects inflammatory responses to m

Periodontal Inflammation and Systemic Diseases: An Overview.

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of infectious origins that often evolves into a chronic condition. Aside from its importance as a stomatologic ailment, chronic periodontitis has gained relevance since it has been shown that it can develop into a systemic condition characterized by unresolved hyper-inflammation, disruption of the innate and adaptive immune system, dysbiosis of the oral, gut and other location's microbiota and other system-wide alterations that may cause, coexist or aggravate other health issues associated to elevated morbi-mortality. The relationships between the

The impact of diabetes on periodontal diseases.

The susceptibility and severity of periodontal diseases is made more severe by diabetes, with the impact on the disease process inversely proportional to the level of glycemic control. Although type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus have different etiologies, and their impact on bone is not identical, they share many of the same complications. Studies in animals and humans agree that both forms of diabetes increase inflammatory events in periodontal tissue, impair new bone formation, and increase expression of RANKL in response to bacterial challenge. High levels of glucose, rea

Periodontal diseases and stress: a brief review.

Periodontal diseases are common chronic inflammatory diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms colonising the subgingival area and inducing local and systemic elevations of pro-inflammatory cytokines resulting in tissue destruction. Apparition and evolution of periodontal diseases are influenced by many local or systemic risk factors. Psychological stress has been suggested as one of them and may negatively influence the outcome of periodontal treatment. However, mechanisms explaining the possible relationship between stress and increased susceptibility to periodontal disease remain poorly

TGF-beta1 gene polymorphisms in periodontal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Genetic polymorphisms in the TGF-beta1 gene were shown to interfere with the transcriptional activity of the TGF-beta1 gene, and this influences the production, secretion or activity of the TGF-beta1 growth factor. Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) gene polymorphism is associated with risk of inflammatory diseases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate TGF-beta1 gene polymorphisms in a Turkish population with different periodontal diseases and to investigate the association between TGF-beta1 genotype and clinical periodontal parameters. METHODS: A total of

(B2) Periodontal diseases and other bacterial infections.

The workshop addressed the following questions with respect to periodontal diseases and bacterial infections seen in HIV infection: (1) What is linear gingival erythema? Is it prevalent only in HIV disease? A crude Delphi technique was used to ascertain whether LGE existed, but a consensus could not be reached. It was agreed that a diagnosis of LGE should be considered only if the lesion persists after removal of plaque in the initial visit. (2) Do periodontal pockets contribute to viremia in HIV infection? At present, the data are not available to answer this question. (3) Do anti-viral drugs

Diagnostic biomarkers for oral and periodontal diseases.

This article provides an overview of periodontal disease diagnosis that uses clinical parameters and biomarkers of the disease process. This article discusses the use of biomarkers of disease that can be identified at the tissue, cellular, and molecular levels and that are measurable in oral fluids such as saliva and gingival crevicular fluid. Biomarkers identified from these biologic fluids include microbial, host response, and connective tissue-related molecules that can target specific pathways of local alveolar bone resorption. Future prospects for oral fluid-based diagnostics that use micr

Mast cells--a role in periodontal diseases?

OBJECTIVES: Limited attention has been given to the role mast cells may play in periodontal diseases. BACKGROUND: Mast cells are indeed found abundantly below and within several types of mucosal epithelia. On the basis of their proteinase content, mast cells are divided into connective tissue (CT) and mucosal phenotypes. The CT phenotype contains both tryptase and chymase (MC(TC)), while the mucosal phenotype contains only tryptase (MC(T)). The in vivo significance of different mast cell phenotypes has not yet been fully established. Mast cells are able to phagocytose, process and present ant

Diagnosis of periodontal manifestations of systemic diseases.

Many systemic diseases can mimic periodontitis or gingivitis. These include many immunologic, infectious, neoplastic and metabolic disorders. In comparison with periodontitis and gingivitis, these disorders are considerable less common. However, since their diagnosis and management differ, a high index of suspicion is frequently needed when confronted a patient presenting with gingival or periodontal disease. This chapter has reviewed a number of systemic conditions that may mimic clinically both gingivitis and chronic periodontitis and has focused on the features that may assist the clinician
