Interdisciplinary therapy for severe periodontitis with Angle Class II Division 1 malocclusion: A case report with 7-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Previous studies have suggested that occlusal discrepancy is a risk factor contributing to periodontal disease. Occlusal discrepancy could increase the risk of developing infrabony defects. The authors present a case of a patient with severe periodontitis who exhibited many infrabony defects in the molar region due to malocclusion-induced trauma. They report the 7-year treatment outcomes of the patient after periodontal regenerative and comprehensive orthodontic therapies for functional recovery with implant prosthodontics. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old woman sought

Oral rehabilitation of a cleft palate patient with tooth-supported, telescopic magnetic overdenture.

A 49-year-old male patient with residual cleft palate and missing pre-maxilla presented with an ill-fitting and unaesthetic maxillary denture. The posterior teeth were periodontally sound but crowded and had defective restorations and secondary caries. We restored the bilateral maxillary canines and first premolars with conical telescopic crowns having magnetic keepers. A metal-reinforced acrylic overdenture with magnetic attachments corresponding to the keepers of the telescopic crowns was fabricated. The telescopic crowns provided a single path of insertion, retention and stability to the pr

Bonded intrusior arch--a simple approach.

Over eruption of maxillary molar is a common finding seen in cases with loss of mandibular antagonist. We came across a periodontally compromised patient with same condition demanding intrusion for the placement of a prosthesis for a missing molar. So an effort was made to design a wire framework bonded directly to the adjacent teeth, to which elastics were engaged to facilitate intrusion.

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis in elderly people experiencing institutional and hospital confinement.

An increasing number of elderly people retain their natural teeth into old age and further, the prevalence of endosseous implants for supporting oral prosthesis is ever increasing. These teeth and implants now present a considerable challenge in terms of maintenance, especially when patients become dependent on care. Periodontal and peri-implant diseases are more prevalent in elderly than in younger age cohorts. There are distinct differences related to the inflammatory response between periodontal and peri-implant tissues, both in young and old age. The age-related reasons for the increase in

Periodontist-Dental Hygienist Collaboration in Periodontal Care for Chronic Periodontitis: An 11-year Case Report.

We report a case of severe chronic periodontitis treated and longitudinally maintained by a periodontist and dental hygienists. The patient was a 45-year-old woman who presented with the chief complaint of gingival bleeding and tooth mobility. An initial examination revealed generalized gingival inflammation and subgingival calculus in the premolar and molar regions. Premature contact was observed in #14 and 45. Clinical examination revealed 42% of sites with a probing depth (PD) of ≥4 mm and 44% of sites with bleeding on probing. Radiographic examination revealed vertical bone resorption in #

Management of a Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma Related to an Implant-Supported Prosthesis: A Case Report.

Peripheral giant cell granulomas (PGCGs) are benign oral cavity tumors, reactive in nature, caused by local trauma or irritation. A 51-year-old woman presented with a soft tissue lesion related to an implant at site 36 (FDI numbering system). An excisional biopsy was completed, and the soft tissue mass was diagnosed as a PGCG. The biopsy led to a lack of keratinized tissue and vestibular depth around the implant site. After the initial healing phase, a free gingival graft was completed. Then, following soft tissue maturation, the cement-retained implant-supported prosthesis was converted into

Retrograde treatment in an extensive implant-tooth-supported reconstruction.

Diagnosis and treatment of chronic apical periodontitis associated with an abutment tooth in an extensive tooth-implant-supported fixed prosthesis is reported. Careful, complete interpretation of clinical data was imperative because the periapical radiolucency presented around the apex of a vital tooth. A retrograde endodontic approach was used to prevent an adverse outcome to the complex rehabilitative treatment that had been performed over many years.

Surgical-orthodontic treatment of patients suffering from severe periodontal disorders - a clinical case study.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic or, more precisely, surgico-orthodontic treatment of patients suffering from periodontal disorders generally requires a multidisciplinary approach by a qualified dental team. Periodontal bone healing is an essential factor for successful orthodontic treatment in a compromised periodontal situation. CLINICAL CASE: We report on the case of an adult patient suffering from severe chronic periodontitis; he was a hyperdivergent skeletal Class III with dento-alveolar compensation, esthetic problems and a significant lack of dental material. A multidisciplinary approach was

Immediate loading as a vehicle for interdisciplinary training in implant placement and restoration.

Recently, implant surgery has been introduced into postdoctoral prosthodontic programs; however, efficient training models to teach this have not been described to date. For training models to be effective and acceptable to all parties, a mutually beneficial situation must be created, and guidelines that can be followed easily need to be described. The purpose of this report is to suggest immediate loading of dental implants as an example for an interdisciplinary training model that integrates both the surgical aspects of implant therapy into the education of prosthodontic graduate students an

Actinomyces gerencseriae hip prosthesis infection: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Actinomyces bacteria are part of the human oropharyngeal microbiota. They have been associated with abdominal, cervicofacial and thoracic infections and a few cases of joint infections have also been described. In particular, Actinomyces gerencseriae, formerly described as Actinomyces israelii serovar II, has rarely been associated with human infections, mostly involving cervicofacial lesions and periodontal diseases. Here, we report one case of hip prosthesis infection due to A. gerencseriae. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Caucasian male developed an inflammatory collection o

Successful treatment of periprosthetic joint infection caused by Granulicatella para-adiacens with prosthesis retention: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Granulicatella and Abiotrophia spp. are difficult to detect due to their complex nutritional requirements. Infections with these organisms are associated with high treatment failure rates. We report the first implant-associated infection caused by Granulicatella para-adiacens, which was cured with anti-microbial treatment consisting of anti-biofilm-active rifampin and debridement, exchange of mobile parts and retention of the prosthesis. CASE PRESENTATION: Patient with a history of left hip arthroplasty presented with acute onset of fever, pain and limited range of motion of the l

Prepubertal periodontitis: a report of 2 cases.

PURPOSE: Prepubertal periodontitis is a term suggested for a form of periodontitis that starts soon after the eruption of primary teeth. There is increased awareness that the disease entity known as "periodontitis" is in all probability a family of related but reasonably discrete diseases. The purpose of this report is to describe the clinical, radiographic, and laboratory findings in 2 patients, as well as treatment of prepubertal periodontitis. METHODS: This study presents 2 cases of generalized prepubertal periodontitis: a 5-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl. RESULTS: Case 1 presented

A combination of clinical and microbiological management of generalized aggressive periodontitis in primary teeth. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) in primary teeth is a rare periodontal disease that occurs during or soon after eruption of the primary teeth. An association with systemic diseases is a possibility. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old Brazilian girl presented with GAP involving the entire primary dentition. The patient and her parents and sister were subjected to microbiological testing to identify the microorganisms involved in the disease. The patient underwent tooth extraction to eradicate the disease and received a prosthesis for the restoration of masticatory function. After

Microbial community analysis of supragingival plaque in patients with fixed prostheses.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Harmony between prostheses and periodontal tissues is essential. The presence of a fixed prosthesis has been reported to increase the risk of periodontal lesion onset in abutment teeth and to affect longevity. However, studies comparing the supragingival plaque biofilm on fixed prostheses and natural teeth are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to investigate the composition of supragingival plaque biofilm microorganisms on the surface of fixed prostheses and to identify differences with those of natural supragingival plaque microorganisms using 16S
