Greenhouse gas emissions from different vegetation types in the permafrost region of the Daxing'an Mountains under drying-rewetting conditions.

The alterations in climatic conditions have led to soil drying-rewetting (DRW) events in permafrost regions, which result in heightened emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG). However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive research on GHG emissions from permafrost under the DRW conditions. To reveal the changes of GHG emissions in permafrost, laboratory simulation experiments were conducted on 0-60 cm active layer soil in four soil ecosystems (Larix gmelinii, Betula platyphylla, mix of L. gmelinii and B. platyphylla, peatland) of the Daxing'an Mountains, northeast China. A 210-day soil cultiva

Hydrological continuums across climate and permafrost gradients: Spatial patterns of organic carbon, greenhouse gases, and major and trace elements.

Organic and inorganic solute fluxes from soils to rivers follow a hydrological continuum linking terrestrial and aquatic compartments, yet this cascade remains poorly constrained in permafrost regions despite its importance for carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) cycling. We investigated six hydrological continuums-soil water, fen, lake, riparian zone, stream, and river-across a 1500 km north-south transect of the Western Siberian Lowland, spanning the full gradient from permafrost-free taiga to continuous permafrost tundra. During summer baseflow, surface and soil waters were analyzed for dissolv

Carbon Fate, Iron Dissolution, and Molecular Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter in Thawed Yedoma Permafrost under Varying Redox Conditions.

Permafrost soils store ∼50% of terrestrial C, with Yedoma permafrost containing ∼25% of the total C. Permafrost is undergoing degradation due to thawing, with potentially hazardous effects on landscape stability and water resources. Complicating ongoing efforts to project the ultimate fate of deep permafrost C is the poorly constrained role of the redox environment, Fe-minerals, and its redox-active phases, which may modulate organic C-abundance, composition, and reactivity through complexation and catalytic processes. We characterized C fate, Fe fractions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) i

Saline Permafrost and Cryopegs as Potentially Important Sources of CO2-Assessing Organic Carbon Mineralization Potentials on the Alaskan Coastal Plain.

Thermokarst lake and drained lake basin (DLB) dynamics are intensifying across the Alaskan Arctic Coastal Plain. Thawing, drainage, and erosion expose surface and deep sediments (> 1 m) to aerobic conditions, with saline deposits being particularly vulnerable due to freeze-point depression. As organic carbon mineralization remains poorly constrained, we determined potentials with an aerobic one-year long incubation at 10°C in permafrost upland, lake talik, lake cryopeg, and refrozen saline DLB sediments. We linked CO2 production to biochemical, hydrochemical, and microbial factors, and assesse

Carbon dioxide and energy fluxes in Siberian permafrost ecosystems: larch forest shows greater resilience to climatic influences than palsa mire.

Climate change occurs more rapidly at high latitudes, making polar ecosystems highly vulnerable to environmental changes. Plants respond to these conditions by altering the fluxes of water vapor (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). This study analyzed the seasonal variability of the Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) of CO2, as well as the sensible (H) and latent (LE) heat fluxes, in two ecosystems in north-central Siberia: a subarctic palsa mire near Igarka, and a mature larch forest near Tura. The flux responses to variations in atmospheric parameters were also assessed. Experimental data were collecte

A first run-of-river hydropower plant development in a permafrost-rich subarctic Canadian region: short-term fate of mercury and carbon.

A first run-of-river power plant built in Nunavik (QC, Canada) lies in a continuous permafrost zone, a substantial carbon (C) rich mercury (Hg) reservoir. Its impoundment could promote permafrost thaw and remobilize Hg and lead to the enhanced production of highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). To elucidate how RORs can influence C and Hg dynamics and transformations in a subarctic landscape, soils, water and benthic invertebrates were sampled shortly before and after the flooding. Soil Hg concentrations were higher in the organic active layer than in frozen ground. Three months after river impou

Insights into the climate-driven evolution of gas hydrate-bearing permafrost sediments: implications for prediction of environmental impacts and security of energy in cold regions.

The present study investigates the evolution of gas hydrate-bearing permafrost sediments against the environmental temperature change. The elastic wave velocities and effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of simulated gas hydrate-bearing sediment samples were measured at a typical range of temperature in permafrost and wide range of hydrate saturation. The experimental results reveal the influence of several complex and interdependent pore-scale factors on the elastic wave velocities and ETC. It was observed that the geophysical and geothermal properties of the system are essentially governed b

Ecosystem-specific interaction effects on CO2 and CH4 fluxes during autumn freeze-thaw cycles in permafrost peatlands of the Great Hinggan Mountains, Northeast China.

Autumn freeze-thaw cycles (AFTCs) represent critical transitional periods influencing greenhouse gas emissions in permafrost peatlands, yet field-based evidence regarding how freeze-thaw variability interacts with peatland type to affect carbon flux dynamics remains limited. Here, we conducted a field observational study across three permafrost peatland types in the Great Hinggan Mountains, Northeast China, including Calamagrostis angustifolia peatland (CA), Larix gmelinii-Sphagnum peatland (LG-SP), and Eriophorum vaginatum peatland (EV). Residual water bodies formed after thermokarst lake drainage in permafrost regions act as hot spots of nutrient and carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions.

Drained thermokarst (thaw) lakes of permafrost regions represent potentially important but poorly constrained hot spots of greenhouse gas (GHG), carbon, and nutrient cycling. To elucidate the biogeochemistry of residual water bodies (RWB) formed after thermokarst lake drainage in permafrost peatlands, we measured dissolved CO₂ and CH₄ concentrations, CO₂ emissions, and dissolved (<0.45 μm) carbon, major, and trace element concentrations in the continuous and discontinuous permafrost zones of the Western Siberian Lowlands. Residual water bodies located within drained lake basins were examined a

Bacterial functional redundancy and carbon metabolism potentials in soil, sediment, and water of thermokarst landscapes across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: Implications for the fate of permafrost carbon.

Permafrost thaw create widespread thermokarst landscapes. As a result, distinct habitats are provided to harbor different bacterial communities in degraded permafrost soil (PBCs), thermokarst lake sediment (SBCs), and lake water (WBCs), driving carbon metabolism differentially. In this study, we investigated functional diversity and redundancy, and carbon metabolism potentials of PBCs, SBCs, and WBCs in thermokarst landscapes across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results showed that PBCs and SBCs had higher taxonomic and functional alpha diversity than WBCs, while WBCs had lower functional red

Between Mosses and Microbes: Stable Isotopes (15N/14N, 13C/12C) Clarify the Trophic Niches of Oribatid Mites on a High-Arctic Permafrost Archipelago (Svalbard, Norway).

Tundra biomes are strongly affected by globally changing temperatures. Rising temperatures will increase soil biota activity and result in higher CO2 release from tundra soils and 'greening' of this biome, which in turn will affect carbon cycling and soil food webs. It is therefore important to better understand those high-latitude soil food webs in tundra biomes. Here, we investigated adult and juvenile soil living oribatid mites (Acari) in eight different microhabitats (i.e., patches of vegetation from Bistorta vivipara, Carex sp./Luzula sp., Cassiope tetragona, Dryas octopetala, Salix spp.

Accelerated Hg loss and increased methylmercury covary with soil organic matter mineralization and dissolved organic matter humification under warming conditions in permafrost marsh, Northeast China.

Currently, little is available on how mercury (Hg) methylation couples with soil organic matter decomposition in degraded permafrost in high northern latitudes, where the climate is becoming warmer rapidly. Here, we revealed the complex interactions between soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and methylmercury (MeHg) production based on an 87-day anoxic warming incubation experiment. Results supported remarkably promotion effects of warming on MeHg production, by 130%-205% on average. Total mercury (THg) loss under warming treatment depended on marsh types

High Methylmercury in Arctic and Subarctic Ponds is Related to Nutrient Levels in the Warming Eastern Canadian Arctic.

Permafrost thaw ponds are ubiquitous in the eastern Canadian Arctic, yet little information exists on their potential as sources of methylmercury (MeHg) to freshwaters. They are microbially active and conducive to methylation of inorganic mercury, and are also affected by Arctic warming. This multiyear study investigated thaw ponds in a discontinuous permafrost region in the Subarctic taiga (Kuujjuarapik-Whapmagoostui, QC) and a continuous permafrost region in the Arctic tundra (Bylot Island, NU). MeHg concentrations in thaw ponds were well above levels measured in most freshwater ecosystems i

Methylmercury concentrations in a degrading lithalsa field: Effects of thermokarst development and revegetation.

Organic matter sequestered in permafrost environments contains mercury (Hg) which can be exposed via permafrost thaw to conditions that favour its microbial conversion into its organic and neurotoxic form, methylmercury (MeHg). Permafrost thaw affects landscapes unevenly, creating a patchwork of conditions controlled by ground ice distribution and time since degradation. However, little is known about the relationship between the evolution of thaw features and net MeHg production in thawing landscapes. Near Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik (Québec), the degradation of permafrost mounds, such as litha

Unravelling methylmercury formation in high-altitude Tibetan thermokarst lakes.

Climate warming accelerates permafrost degradation, which not only increases greenhouse gas emission but also the conversion of permafrost-stored mercury (Hg) to the neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) - a global pollutant to humans and ecosystems. While several studies have examined Hg transformation processes in high-latitude Arctic permafrost, little is known regarding the formation and distribution of MeHg in high-altitude permafrost, particularly the thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (so-called Earth's third pole). We conducted field investigations and show an elevated MeHg concentrati

Geophysical-based assessment of hydrological sustenance in inhabited relict rock glaciers of the semi-arid Western Himalaya, India.

The future of High Mountain Himalayan Communities (HMHC) is increasingly precarious due to significant threats from retreating glaciers, diminishing snow cover, and thawing permafrost, which historically provided a stable and reliable source of freshwater. In response to declining water availability, indigenous communities are adopting innovative agro-pastoral strategies, including upslope migration. In the Western Himalayas, local populations are increasingly relocating to higher valleys in search of water and cultivable land, often settling atop rock glaciers. This study presents the first s

Chemoautotrophic carbon fixation in thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) derived from thermokarst lakes is usually considered to be prone to microbial degradation and releases substantial carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, potentially enhancing the positive permafrost carbon (C)-climate feedback. In contrast to this long-term standing view, here we show that dark C fixation exceeds DOC degradation in ~1/3 of the investigated thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, based on the combination of large-scale water and sediment sampling across seasons and years, biodegradable DOC experiments and 14C-labeling bicarbonate (NaH14CO3) assimila

Sunlight Induces the Production of Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from Thermokarst Ponds.

Ground subsidence caused by permafrost thawing causes the formation of thermokarst ponds, where organic compounds from eroding permafrost accumulate. We photolyzed water samples from two such ponds in Northern Quebec and discovered the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using mass spectrometry. One pond near peat-covered permafrost mounds was organic-rich, while the other near sandy mounds was organic-poor. Compounds up to C10 were detected, comprising the atoms of O, N, and S. The main compounds were methanol, acetaldehyde, and acetone. Hourly VOC fluxes under actinic fluxes simila

Warming increases methylmercury production in an Arctic soil.

Rapid temperature rise in Arctic permafrost impacts not only the degradation of stored soil organic carbon (SOC) and climate feedback, but also the production and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) toxin that can endanger humans, as well as wildlife in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Currently little is known concerning the effects of rapid permafrost thaw on microbial methylation and how SOC degradation is coupled to MeHg biosynthesis. Here we describe the effects of warming on MeHg production in an Arctic soil during an 8-month anoxic incubation experiment. Net MeHg production incre
