Formation of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in ephrin-A5-/- mice.

PURPOSE: Primary vitreous regression is a critical event in mammalian eye development required for proper ocular maturity and unhindered vision. Failure of this event results in the eye disease persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV), also identified as persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), a condition characterized by the presence of a fibrovascular mass adjacent to the lens and retina, and associated with visual disability and blindness. Here, we identify ephrin-A5 to be a critical regulator for primary vitreous regression. METHODS: Wild-type and ephrin-A5(-/-) eyes were examined at v

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous: magnetic resonance imaging and clinical findings.

BACKGROUND: This study presents magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of both the anterior and posterior types of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) to facilitate the differential diagnosis from other intraocular abnormalities. METHODS: Seventeen patients with PHPV who were evaluated using non-contrast and contrast-enhanced T1- and T2-weighted images were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 17 patients with PHPV (6 males, 11 females), 13 had unilateral PHPV (11 left eyes, 2 right eyes), and 4 had bilateral PHPV. The MRI findings of the anterior type of PHPV included

[Persistent and hyperplastic primary vitreous syndrome. Clinical and therapeutic aspects].

PURPOSE: Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) is a rare developmental malformation of the eye. This anomaly is usually unilateral and unassociated with other disease. PHPV may have clinical variations: an anterior and/or a posterior one. Diagnosis and treatment are exposed in our paper. METHODS: We study 38 eyes in 34 patients. All patients had an anterior form of PHPV. Nine of them associated a posterior form. Eighteen eyes underwent surgery, the mean postoperative follow-up is 4.7 years. Treatment is discussed, depending on the initial form of PHPV. We report the evolution of the

Megalocornea and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous masquerading as congenital glaucoma.

A 7-month-old infant referred with suspected bilateral congenital glaucoma was noted under general anaesthesia to have simple megalocornea in association with contralateral glaucoma in an eye suspected of harbouring an intraocular tumour. Following enucleation, histopathology demonstrated persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous. The presence of simple megalocornea of autosomal recessive inheritance in association with contralateral persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in a buphthalmic eye is of ophthalmic interest, and appears to be unique.

Computed tomography for diagnosis of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV).

Leucocoric eyes with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) were studied by computed tomography (CT). Maximum information was derived from use of an intravenous contrast agent and repetition of the scanning in the lateral decubitus position. Eight diagnostically helpful radiologic findings were noted, some for the first time. (1) Radiodense retrolental soft tissue can be demonstrated along Cloquet's canal. (2) The retrolental tissue enhances after administration of intravenous iodine-containing contrast material. (3) Congenital nonattachment of the retina is demonstrable by CT. (4) Th

Vascular anastomoses between the iris and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous.

Prominent radial iris blood vessels created small but definite pupillary notches in five children with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous and persistence of the tunica vasculosa lentis. Detection of these abnormal iris vessels suggested the presence of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous and related syndromes even when the diagnosis was obscured by the presence of an opaque lens. These vessels represented early developmental arrest and may have been associated with abnormal development of the macula and optic nerve. Surgical and amblyopia therapy, therefore, may not provide useful v

Ocular complications of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in three dogs.

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) syndrome associated with either severe ocular complications or multiple ocular lesions was diagnosed in three young dogs, a Samoyed, a Spanish Pachon, and a mixed breed dog. Due to opacification of the anterior ocular structures, B-mode and color-flow Doppler ultrasonography were performed to aid diagnosis. The Samoyed presented with unilateral hyphema; the Spanish Pachon presented with unilateral secondary glaucoma associated with uveitis and hyphema OD and leucocoria OU; and the mixed breed presented with bilateral leucocoria. B-mode ultrasonog

Intrauterine exposure to clomiphene and neonatal persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous.

A 4-year-and-10-month-old girl was diagnosed shortly after birth with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV). Her mother took clomiphene 100 mg daily for approximately 4 weeks and discontinued the drug once she had a positive pregnancy test. The exact time of gestation was not clear. Clomiphene is an estrogen antagonist effective in the treatment of anovulation. Various ocular side effects have been described in women taking the drug, including decreased vision, mydriasis, flashing lights, central scotoma, photophobia, diplopia, allergic reactions, retinal vasospasms, detachment poste

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) in two Siberian husky dogs.

Three eyes in two Siberian husky dogs were clinically diagnosed as persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) by means of ophthalmoscopy and ultrasonography (USG). Examination of mildly affected PHPV eyes with an ophthalmoscope showed the axial part of the posterior capsule to be opaque. The central lesion of the posterior capsule in severely affected eyes had been opaque with many blood vessels. Echographic changes in mild cases of PHPV were outside of the lens, linearly hyperechoic, parallel to the posterior lens capsule. In a severely affected eyeball, funnel-shaped hyperechoic change

CHARGE Syndrome Associated With Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused primarily by CHD7 mutations, affecting multiple organs, including the eyes, heart, and ears. Ocular abnormalities are common, but bilateral persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) has not been previously reported in CHARGE syndrome. PFV results from the failure of the fetal hyaloid vasculature to regress, typically affecting one eye. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 10-month-old female with bilateral PFV associated with CHARGE syndrome, confirmed by a de novo CHD7 mutation. Systemic evaluation revealed sensorineural hearing loss and conge

Atypical anterior persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous: report of a rare case.

BACKGROUND: Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) is a congenital form of vitreous dysplasia that can be categorized into anterior, posterior, and mixed types according to the affected location within the eye. Definitive diagnoses of PHPV are usually made based on B-mode ultrasound, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and Doppler ultrasound findings. In this report, we discuss the case of a 7-year-old boy in whom a definitive diagnosis of atypical anterior PHPV was possible based on intraoperative observations, pathological findings, and the results of ophthalmic examination. [Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous--developmental anomaly of the eye in children].

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreus in children continues to be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for ophthalmologists. It can occur in isolation, in association with other ocular disorders and rarely as a part of systemic disorder. Characteristic features include microphthalmic eye, white vascularized retrolental tissue with or without a persistent hyaloid artery, centrally dragged ciliary processes, an anteriorly shifted and (or) swollen lens, and varing degrees of lenticular opacification. PHPF is the most common associaton with unilateral cataracts. Differential diagnosis and func

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in a family with osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome.

We had the opportunity to investigate the early abnormalities of the eyes in a family with osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome. This syndrome combines severe premature osteoporosis with a bilateral eye disorder, leading to early onset blindness. Using colour doppler imaging in the 4-month-old girl from this affected family we demonstrated persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in both eyes. Her brother's eyes had developed a partially calcified undefined mass. Our observation supports the hypothesis, that the disease gene may encode a matrix protein expressed in bone and eye.

[Complex ultrasound examination children with persisting hyperplastic primary vitreous].

Complex ultrasound examination was performed in 108 children with unilateral congenital cataract (UCC) and persisting hyperplastic primary vitreous syndrome (PHPVS) to reveal indications and contraindications for surgery. The presence of functioning vessels with linear blood flow velocity (LBFV) measurement was performed in fibrovascular band and retrolenticular membrane (RLM) in different stages of PHPVS using color Doppler and energetic mapping. The echographic density of fibrovascular band and RLM was estimated using echodensitometry. The results of the study showed correlation of PHPVS sev
