Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Association with Maternal and Infant Thyroid Homeostasis: A Multipollutant Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of thyroid homeostasis has been indicated in human studies targeting effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Influence on the maternal thyroid system by POPs is of special interest during pregnancy because such effects could impair infant thyroid homeostasis. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between POPs and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormones (THs) in mother and child pairs from the Northern Norway Mother-and-Child Contaminant Cohort Study (MISA). METHODS: Nineteen POPs and 10 thyroid parameters were analyzed in serum from 391 pr

Preconception maternal and paternal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and birth size: the LIFE study.

BACKGROUND: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are developmental toxicants, but the impact of both maternal and paternal exposures on offspring birth size is largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations between maternal and paternal serum concentrations of 63 POPs, comprising five major classes of pollutants, with birth size measures. METHODS: Parental serum concentrations of 9 organochlorine pesticides, 1 polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), 7 perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs), 10 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 36 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured before conce

Partitioning of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) between human serum and breast milk: a literature review.

The literature was reviewed to assess the relationship between the lipid adjusted concentration in human serum and breast milk (expressed as the serum/milk ratio) of a broad range of POPs in paired samples. Thirteen studies were identified, including seven studies that reported serum/milk ratios for polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs), ten for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), five for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and five for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Mean serum/milk ratios ranged between 0.7 and 25 depending on the compound and congener. For PCDD/Fs, PCBs

Exposure to persistent organic pollutants in newborn dried blood spots and childhood acute myeloid leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rare malignancy representing 15-20% of all leukemia diagnoses among children. Maternal exposure to persistent organic pollutants is suggestive of increased risk for childhood AML based on existing evidence. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between persistent organic pollutants and childhood AML using newborn dried bloodspots (DBS) from the Michigan BioTrust for Health. We obtained data on AML cases diagnosed prior to 15 years of age (n = 130) and controls (n = 130) matched to cases on week of birth from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

Persistent organic pollutants and inorganic elements in the Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus wintering off Portugal.

This study presents the first data on trace element and organic pollutant concentrations in the Critically Endangered Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus collected in 2010 and 2011 in Portugal. Trace element levels were below the threshold levels for adverse effects on birds, despite the Hg concentrations in feathers (4.35μg·g-1ww). No significant differences were detected between individuals from 2010 and 2011 except for Se concentrations in liver, feathers and muscle (higher in 2010) and Ag in liver and muscle (higher in 2011). No significant differences were detected in total concentr

Seasonal variation in accumulation of persistent organic pollutants in an Arctic marine benthic food web.

The aim of the present study was to investigate seasonal variation in persistent organic pollutant (POP) concentrations, as well as food-web biomagnification, in an Arctic, benthic marine community. Macrozoobenthos, demersal fish and common eiders were collected both inside and outside of Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, during May, July and October 2007. The samples were analysed for a selection of legacy chlorinated POPs. Overall, low levels of POPs were measured in all samples. Although POP levels and accumulation patterns showed some seasonal variation, the magnitude and direction of change was not

Computational modelling of host-guest interactions between a Ni(II) coordination complex and persistent organic pollutants.

Regulatory restrictions and controlled experimental access to numerous hazardous agrochemicals pose a growing challenge to the strategic design of advanced sensing materials for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This study presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of a well-characterized Ni(II)-based coordination complex, prepared by a slow diffusion process, as a possible sensing platform for the identification of several POPs. Density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT, reduced density gradient, and electron localization function analyses were utilized to systematically inve

From smart sensing to adaptive remediation: artificial intelligence and Internet of Things for persistent organic pollutants.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) remain a major environmental challenge because of their persistence, long-range transport, bioaccumulation, and resistance to degradation. Conventional monitoring and remediation systems provide reliable analytical performance but are largely fragmented, laboratory dependent, and unable to deliver the continuous, predictive, and adaptive management required for complex, dynamic contamination scenarios. Recent literature reports substantial advances in biosensors, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled sensing, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (A

Does contamination with legacy persistent organic pollutants still prevail over emerging compounds in Arctic marine mammals?

Transboundary pollution with harmful chemicals triggers research in remote regions such as the Arctic. Legacy and emerging hydrophobic organic contaminants, including persistent organic pollutants, biomagnify and are of particular concern in marine top predators and humans. Each chemical group can exceed effect thresholds in apex predators without considering mixture effects with other contaminants nor multiple stressor settings. We used silicone chemometers to investigate the contaminant profiles in blubber tissues collected from 84 individuals covering six Arctic marine mammal species from E

Influence of KRAS mutations, persistent organic pollutants, and trace elements on survival from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Reasons why pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) continues to have poor survival are only partly known. No previous studies have analyzed the combined influence of KRAS mutations, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and trace elements upon survival in PDAC or in any other human cancer. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the individual and combined influence of KRAS mutations, POPs, and trace elements upon survival from PDAC. METHODS: Incident cases of PDAC (n = 185) were prospectively identified in five hospitals in Eastern Spain in 1992-1995 and interviewed face-to-face during hospita

Persistent organic pollutants in infants and toddlers: Relationship between concentrations in matched plasma and faecal samples.

Early-childhood biomonitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is challenging due to the logistic and ethical limitations associated with blood sampling. We investigated using faeces as a non-invasive matrix to estimate internal exposure to POPs. The concentrations of selected POPs were measured in matched plasma and faecal samples collected from 20 infants/toddlers (aged 13±4.8months), including a repeat sample time point for 13 infants (~5months apart). We observed higher rates of POP quantification in faeces (2g dry weight) than in plasma (0.5mL). Among the five chemicals that had qu

Persistent organic pollutants induced protein expression and immunocrossreactivity by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia PM102: a prospective bioremediating candidate.

A novel bacterium capable of growth on trichloroethylene as the sole carbon source was identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia PM102 by 16S rDNA sequencing (accession number of NCBI GenBank: JQ797560). In this paper, we report the growth pattern, TCE degradation, and total proteome of this bacterium in presence of various other carbon sources: toluene, phenol, glucose, chloroform, and benzene. TCE degradation was comparatively enhanced in presence of benzene. Densitometric analysis of the intracellular protein profile revealed four proteins of 78.6, 35.14, 26.2, and 20.47 kDa while the extr

Chronic consumption of farmed salmon containing persistent organic pollutants causes insulin resistance and obesity in mice.

BACKGROUND: Dietary interventions are critical in the prevention of metabolic diseases. Yet, the effects of fatty fish consumption on type 2 diabetes remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a diet containing farmed salmon prevents or contributes to insulin resistance in mice. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Adult male C57BL/6J mice were fed control diet (C), a very high-fat diet without or with farmed Atlantic salmon fillet (VHF and VHF/S, respectively), and Western diet without or with farmed Atlantic salmon fillet (WD and WD/S, respectively). Other mice were fed VHF

Low dose of some persistent organic pollutants predicts type 2 diabetes: a nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Low doses of some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) associate cross-sectionally with type 2 diabetes, whereas associations with high POP exposures are inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether several POPs prospectively predict type 2 diabetes within the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort. METHODS: Participants in this nested case-control study were diabetes free in 1987-1988. By 2005-2006, the 90 controls remained free of diabetes, whereas the 90 cases developed diabetes. Using serum collected in 1987-1988, we measured 8 organochlorine pe

Persistent organic pollutants and mercury in dead and dying glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) at Bjørnøya (Svalbard).

Dead and dying glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) were collected on Bjørnøya in the Barents Sea in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Autopsies of the seabirds only explained a clear cause of death for three (14%) of the 21 birds. A total of 71% of the birds were emaciated. Liver and brain samples were analysed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and mercury (Hg). High levels of SigmaOCPs, SigmaPCBs, SigmaPBDEs and alpha-HBCD were found in liver and brain. Compared to the dead and dying glaucous gulls

Chemical, biological, and ecotoxicological assessment of pesticides and persistent organic pollutants in the Bahlui River, Romania.

BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE: Current knowledge on environmental impacts of industrial activities in Romania, particularly persistent organic pollutants (POPs), indicates that environmental standards of the European Union are not systematically met. In our study area, additional sources of POPs are agriculture and domestic wastes. Very scarce information is available upon environmental contaminations and effects. In the present study, we investigated the chemical pollution and their eventual impact on the ecosystem by measuring POPs and by using biological indicators of pollution. MATERIALS AND

Persistent organic pollutants, lipid remodeling and gene expression during reproductive maturation in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Environmental contaminants pose a significant risk to marine species due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential to impair reproduction. In fish, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are primarily acquired through diet. This study investigated POP accumulation and lipid metabolism in farmed Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) from early maturation to spawning, integrating chemical analyses with gene expression profiling of lipid- and stress-related pathways. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were the most abundant POPs detected, followed by toxaphene, reflecting feed composition. POP conce

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and body mass index trajectories from birth to age 13.

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been linked to growth and adiposity development in children. However, only few studies considered the growth dynamic and none have tracked children into adolescence. This study included 450 mother-child pairs from the PELAGIE cohort (France). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Organochlorine pesticides (OCs), Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were measured in cord blood. A latent class growth model identified four types of BMI z-score (zBMI) trajectories from birth to 13 years. Associations
