'I Feel Like I'm Hitting A Wall or There's A Narrow Tunnel': A Qualitative Study Based on Online Forum Posts by Women With Vaginismus.

BACKGROUND: Women may find it difficult to seek face-to-face support, as topics related to sexuality are often considered taboo. The online environment makes it easier to interact with others and share stories while using an anonymous username. AIM: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of women with vaginismus by analysing online forum posts. By examining unfiltered personal narratives, we sought to gain insights into their challenges, coping mechanisms, and the factors influencing their help-seeking behaviours without the constraints of predefined research questions. METHODS: Q

Developing peer support in film for cancer self-management: what do men want other men to know?

PURPOSE: This study reports an innovative theory-driven approach for developing filmed peer support for cancer self-management. Peer support conventionally includes empathetic interaction between people with shared experiences. This unique study considers how to authentically communicate peer empathy in a one-way film narrative. METHODS: We co-created a film based on phenomenological interviews with seven men who had volunteered to support other men by sharing their experiences of coping with prostate cancer. The film contributed to successful engagement with self-management. Interpretative p

Learning about depression by watching gaming videos: a case study on the potential of digital games for psychoeducation and destigmatization.

INTRODUCTION: People with depression can also suffer from stigmatization related to depression. Psychoeducation is one way to alleviate stigmatization (destigmatization), so that particularly people without depression become more aware of depressive symptoms and can empathize better with depressed people. Here, we scrutinize the potential of digital games to support psychoeducation and destigmatization of depression. METHODS: We conducted a mixed methods online study with 117 participants. In the intervention phase, participants watched gaming videos and noted down aspects that had left a las

Lived Perspectives on "Reconstructing Person-Centeredness".

Numerous papers in the "Reconstructing Person-Centeredness" supplement of the Journal of Applied Gerontology reference the perceived relationship between person-centeredness and quality dementia care, from fostering meaningful relationships and individualizing care, to practical applications of shared decision making and co-design of technologies and research measures. This article draws upon reflections from members of the Alzheimer's Association Early Stage Advisory Group regarding person-centeredness and quality dementia care. Their experiences, beliefs, and perspectives provide lived examp

Young people describe their prediagnosis cancer experience.

OBJECTIVE: Young people often report a protracted journey to diagnosis and frequently report perceived delays. This study was undertaken to increase understanding of the self-reported prediagnosis experiences in young people with a non-haematological cancer, as close as possible to the time of diagnosis. METHODS: Narrative interviews were conducted with 24 young people aged 16-24, 2-4 months from the diagnosis of a solid tumour. Data were analysed to identify whether prediagnosis narratives could be classified according to shared characteristics (typologies) to identify broader contextual iss

Client Retrospective Accounts of Corrective Experiences in Motivational Interviewing Integrated With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

A corrective experience (CE) is one "in which a person comes to understand or experience affectively an event or relationship in a different and unexpected way" (Castonguay & Hill, 2012, p. 5). CEs disconfirm clients' expectations based on past problematic experiences, and can be emotional, relational, behavioral, and/or cognitive. This qualitative study explored corrective shifts among recovered participants (N = 8) who had received motivational interviewing (MI) integrated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in a randomized controlled trial comparing CBT alone to MI-CBT for generalized a

'The child's past in the adult's present': The trauma of the Siege of Leningrad (1941-1944).

This study deals with the individual and collective memory of Leningrad Siege survivors who experienced mass and prolonged wartime trauma during childhood (1941-44). While much has been published about the Siege, there has to date been no investigation by psychologists into the effects of extreme deprivation on Siege victims apart from one pilot study (Gulina et al., 2005). This study is still underway. Interviews with 80 participants (68 female and 12 male) are analysed and discussed here. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and content analysis are utilized. Unpublished archival w

Women's accounts of help-seeking in early rheumatoid arthritis from symptom onset to diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: As interest in gender and health grows, the notion that women are more likely than men to consult doctors is increasingly undermined as more complex understandings of help seeking and gender emerge. While men's reluctance to seek help is associated with practices of masculinities, there has been less consideration of women's help-seeking practices. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease that predominantly affects women and requires prompt treatment but considerable patient-based delays persist along the care pathway. This paper examines women's accounts of help seeking in e

Imaginative elaboration in agenesis of the corpus callosum: topic modeling and perplexity.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found deficits in imaginative elaboration and social inference to be associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC; Renteria-Vasquez et al., 2022; Turk et al., 2009). In the current study, Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) responses from a neurotypical control group and a group of individuals with ACC were used to further study the capacity for imaginative elaboration and story coherence. METHOD: Topic modeling was employed utilizing Latent Diritchlet Allocation to characterize the narrative responses to the pictures used in the TAT. A measure of the dif

Trauma complexity and child abuse: A qualitative study of attachment narratives in adult refugees with PTSD.

The present study aimed to identify trauma types over the life course among adult refugees and to explore their accounts of childhood maltreatment. A sample of 43 Arabic-speaking refugees with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) attending a treatment context in Denmark were interviewed. Using a "Trauma Coding Manual" developed for this study, trauma types were identified in interview transcripts. In both men and women with Iraqi and Palestinian-Lebanese backgrounds, high levels of trauma complexity and high rates of childhood maltreatment were found (63%, n = 27). A number of concepts and cat

I WAS HERE: young mothers who have experienced homelessness use Photovoice and participatory qualitative analysis to demonstrate strengths and assets.

Inspired by Photovoice, a participatory research methodology, I WAS HERE was a photoblogging workshop in Toronto, Canada, for young mothers who, when they joined, were either homeless or had past experience of homelessness. A participatory qualitative analysis process was developed to support workshop participants in collectively conducting qualitative analysis on a selection of their photoblogs exploring how they view their lives. Five mothers engaged in the participatory qualitative analysis process to categorize their photoblogs into themes. Participants selected over 70 of their personal p

[Validation of an instructional therapeutic tool to demonstrate cardiac catheterization].

The scope of this work was to validate a toy and a narrative as an instructional tool to present to children who are to be submitted to cardiac catheterization. Content validation was performed by 23 specialist judges (storytellers, child educators, nurses, medics, educational psychologists, occupational therapists, and a psychologist), by using a form considering the following topics: goals, structure and presentation, as well as relevance. Quantitative data was analyzed through the Content Validation Index (CVI) and a cutoff of 0.80 was adopted. Qualitative data was then submitted to themati

Patient and caregiver priorities for quality improvement on general medical wards: a multicentre group concept mapping study.

IMPORTANCE: Quality improvement efforts on general medical wards are often driven by organisational or clinician priorities, and little is known about patient or caregiver priorities. OBJECTIVE: To understand contributors to patients' in-hospital experience and how patients and caregivers prioritise these for improvement. METHODS: We recruited inpatients or their caregivers from the general medical wards of 10 hospitals across Canada from November 2023 to February 2025 to participate in a group concept mapping study. Group concept mapping is a participatory multistep mixed method used to und

Deep Brain Stimulation, Continuity over Time, and the True Self.

One of the topics that often comes up in ethical discussions of deep brain stimulation (DBS) is the question of what impact DBS has, or might have, on the patient's self. This is often understood as a question of whether DBS poses a threat to personal identity, which is typically understood as having to do with psychological and/or narrative continuity over time. In this article, we argue that the discussion of whether DBS is a threat to continuity over time is too narrow. There are other questions concerning DBS and the self that are overlooked in discussions exclusively focusing on psycholog

Meniscus tears treatment: The good, the bad and the ugly-patterns classification and practical guide.

Over the years, several studies demonstrated the crucial role of knee menisci in joint biomechanics. As a result, save the meniscus has become the new imperative nowadays, and more and more studies addressed this topic. The huge amount of data on this topic may create confusion in those who want to approach this surgery. The aim of this review is to provide a practical guide for treatment of meniscus tears, including an overview of technical aspects, outcomes in the literature and personal tips. Taking inspiration from a famous movie directed by Sergio Leone in 1966, the authors classified men

Communicating About Sexuality in Autism: Experiences of Primary Caregivers.

Sexuality is a fundamental part of human development and should be addressed in its physical, emotional, and social dimensions. However, when it involves autistic children and adolescents, the topic remains marked by taboos, silence, and misinformation, especially within families. To understand the experiences of caregivers of autistic children and adolescents in Brazil and Spain regarding communication about sexuality, a qualitative narrative study was carried out based on Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Theory. The research was conducted in Brazil and Spain. In Brazil, participants were recru

Characterizing Online Narratives About Colonoscopy Experiences: Comparing Colon Cancer "Screeners" Versus "Survivors".

Effective screening can reduce colorectal cancer mortality; however, screening uptake is suboptimal. Patients' stories about various health topics are widely available online and in behavioral interventions and are valued by patients. Although these narratives may be promising strategies for promoting cancer screening behavior, scant research has compared the influence of different role models. This study involving content analysis of online stories aimed to (a) describe the content of online experiential narratives about colonoscopy; (b) compare narratives from individuals who had a colonosco
