Social aggression, such as domestic violence, has been associated with a reduced ability to take on others' perspectives. In this naturalistic imaging study, we investigated whether training human participants to take on a first-person embodied perspective during the experience of domestic violence enhances the identification with the victim and elicits brain activity associated with the monitoring of the body and surrounding space and the experience of threat. We combined fMRI measurements with preceding virtual reality exposure from either first-person perspective (1PP) or third-person persp

Primary teeth play a crucial role in a child's development, particularly in maintaining space for permanent teeth. The premature loss of a primary tooth can lead to orthodontic issues, making the use of space maintainers essential to ensure proper growth and development of permanent teeth. To preserve space, the fabrication of a space maintainer is necessary. Since conventional space maintainers do not restore masticatory function, this study presents an innovative solution for space preservation following the extraction of the first primary molar through the design of the functional space mai

OBJECTIVES: Aboriginal Canadians (i.e., First Nations, Inuit and Métis) are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, and experience greater social and economic marginalization and poorer housing conditions. This study sought to understand the differences in the determinants of health and housing-related characteristics between samples of Aboriginal and Caucasian adults living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario.
METHODS: We analyzed baseline demographic, socio-economic, health, and housing-related data from 521 individuals (79 Aboriginal and 442 Caucasian) living with HIV/AIDS and enrolled in the Positi

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological assessment feedback has the potential to promote cognitive/brain health, yet few studies have tested how feedback can be modified to improve its uptake. The current study used a randomized, between-subjects longitudinal design to test the effect of spaced retrieval practice (SRP) on uptake of neuropsychological assessment feedback.
METHOD: Participants included 65 predominantly Black American (83%) older adults (Mage: 65.48) who underwent clinical neuropsychological assessment at a Veteran's Affairs outpatient clinic. Following the assessment, participants were r

OBJECTIVE: Disintegration is a recently proposed broad, trait-like reconceptualization of the proneness to psychotic-like experiences/behaviors.
METHODS: We tested the assumption that the 6-factor model (Five-Factor traits plus Disintegration) was the most adequate one and that it was invariant across clinical and non-clinical populations. The clinical sample (n = 161) consisted of patients who had at least one psychotic episode, duration of illness less than 10 years, currently in remission. The general population (n = 409) was matched with the patient sample by age, gender, and education. N

Personal space regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. Personal space varies among individuals and with some mental health conditions. Simulated personal space intrusions in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) reveal larger preferred interpersonal distance in that setting. These findings led us to conduct the first test of live interpersonal distance preferences in symptoms in BPD. With direct observation of subjects' personal space behavior in the stop-distance paradigm, we found a 2-fold larger preferred interpersonal distance in BPD than control (n = 30, n = 23). We

BACKGROUND: Although perceptual and representational neglect are frequently associated, the demonstration of a double dissociation between both neglect forms suggests that both rely on different central mechanisms. In addition, perceptual neglect can be selectively observed within personal space or extrapersonal space. However, it is not known whether the latter dissociation also exists in representational neglect.
METHODS: The authors investigated this question in two brain-damaged patients with anatomically different lesions sites, using neuropsychological tests specifically designed to ass

A vast range of neurophysiological, neuropsychological and behavioural results in monkeys and humans have shown that the immediate surroundings of the body, also known as peripersonal space (PPS), are processed in a unique way. Three roles have been ascribed to PPS mechanisms: to react to threats, to avoid obstacles and to act on objects. However, in many circumstances, one does not wait for objects or agents to enter PPS to plan these behaviours. Typically, one has more chances to survive if one starts running away from the lion when one sees it in the distance than if it is a few steps away.

Whether reaching for an object or avoiding a potential threat, our ability to interact with the world relies on anticipating physical contact with nearby objects. This ability is thought to depend on the facilitation of tactile processing whenever an object enters the region surrounding the body where physical interaction is possible, referred to as 'peripersonal space'. Traditionally, these facilitation effects have been ascribed to the activity of the peripersonal neurons, which show maximal responses when tactile stimuli on the body co-occur with nearby visual or auditory stimuli, and would

Human awareness of left space may be disrupted by cerebral lesions to the right hemisphere (hemispatial neglect). Current knowledge on the anatomical bases of this complex syndrome is based on the results of group studies that investigated primarily the best known aspect of the syndrome, which is visual neglect for near extrapersonal (or peripersonal) space. However, another component-neglect for personal space-is more often associated with, than double-dissociated from, extrapersonal neglect, especially, in chronic patients. The present investigation aimed at exploring the anatomical substrat

This paper discusses the laterality of parietal association areas, focusing on hemispatial neglect and body representation. Extra-personal spatial neglect can be severe and is frequently observed following right parietal lesions; personal neglect is also common with right parietal lesions. According to the frame of awareness and perception, I speculate that the awareness of space is related to hemispatial neglect of extra-personal space, and awareness of body is related to personal neglect. Both clinical symptoms are common with right parietal lesions. On the other hand, I speculate that the p

The human nervous system constructs a Euclidean representation of near (personal) space by combining multiple sources of information (cues). We investigated the cues used for the representation of personal space in a patient with visual form agnosia (DF). Our results indicated that DF relies predominantly on binocular vergence information when determining the distance of a target despite the presence of other (retinal) cues. Notably, DF was able to construct an Euclidean representation of personal space from vergence alone. This finding supports previous assertions that vergence provides the n

To better identify the distinctive characteristics of space representation in the radial dimension, we have proposed a new paradigm: the landmarks alignment task where two parallel aluminum bars were radially presented. Children had to move a landmark along one bar and place it at the same location as the reference landmark placed by the examiner on the parallel bar. The major interest of this task was its capacity to assess space representation in the radial dimension when considering a spatial landmark that oriented the subject's attention toward the orthogonal dimension. The most important

The space surrounding the body, and the regulation of this buffer zone play a central role in adaptive behavior, with direct implications for psychopathology. The physical distance that we choose to maintain between ourselves and others for social comfort is known as Interpersonal Distance (IPD), whereas the action space that marks the perceptual border between the self and the external world is known as Peripersonal Space (PPS ). While both IPD and PPS represent personal space, they are distinct constructs, each associated with different methodologies. Here we review the existing literature o

Research in neuroscience reveals that the brain constructs multiple representation of space. Here, we primarily focus on peripersonal space (PPS) representation, the region of space immediately surrounding our bodies and in which objects can be grasped and manipulated. We review convergent results from several generations of studies, including neurophysiological studies in animals, neuropsychological investigations in monkeys and brain-damaged patients with spatial cognition disorders, as well as recent neuroimaging experiments in neurologically normal individuals. Collectively, these studies

BACKGROUND: To describe life-space mobility and explore associations of motor and non-motor symptoms with life-space mobility in people with Parkinson's disease (PD).
METHODS: About 164 community-dwelling persons with PD (mean age 71.6 years, 64.6% men) received a postal survey and a subsequent home visit. Motor assessments included perceived walking difficulties (Walk-12G), mobility (Timed Up and Go test), motor symptoms (UPDRS-III), and freezing of gait (item 3, FOG-Qsa). Non-motor symptoms included depressive symptoms (GDS-15), pain, fatigue (NHP-EN), and global cognition (MoCA). Life-spac

High temporal frequency global positioning system (GPS) data are increasingly employed in mobility-based exposure assessments, yet their advantages over lower-frequency data remain uncertain for long-term applications. Understanding how GPS sampling rates affect exposure estimates is crucial for identifying the temporal scale at which human daily mobility affects exposure assessments and for informing practical strategies for GPS data collection. This study evaluated the influence of sampling rates on long-term personal exposure to air pollution, noise, green space, and fast food environments.

Peripersonal space (PPS) is the body-centered area where interactions occur and objects can be reached. Its boundaries are dynamic, modulated by ongoing sensorimotor experiences: limb immobilization shrinks PPS, whereas tool use expands it. However, consistent clinical information on PPS alterations remains limited due to methodological heterogeneity, varying types and severities of sensorimotor disorders, and diverse experimental paradigms. This review explores the causal mechanisms of PPS processing by integrating findings from brain-lesioned patients and individuals with body deafferentatio

The right cerebral hemisphere plays a crucial rule in spatial cognition, spanning from perception of elementary features, such as location, color, line orientation or shape to representation of different spaces (3D space, allocentric, egocentric, face, personal, peri-personal, or imaginal). One important aspect of its contribution concerns the perception of space symmetry and the representation of objects and scenes, with reference to the midline or body axis. This representation results from a balance between spatial attention processes depending from the two hemispheres. Healthy participants

BACKGROUND: Unilateral spatial inattention (USI) (a.k.a. neglect, unilateral neglect, visual neglect) is a common occurrence after stroke. It can also occur subsequent to traumatic brain injury. Insult to the right inferior (posterior) parietal cortex is the structure that is virtually always involved, although other brain areas have been implicated. The major consequence of USI is that the patient is unaware of one side of the body, and/or one side of visual space. Current literature expresses this as USI in the individual's personal, peri-personal, and extra-personal spaces.
