Assessment of personality disorders in adolescents - a clinical validity and utility study of the structured interview of personality organization (STIPO).

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of personality disorders (PD) in adolescence still poses a challenge. Early diagnosis and targeted intervention are called for, since patients with PD present with severe consequences in terms of psychosocial functioning and personal suffering including higher suicide risk. New guidelines advise semi-structured interviews for the dimensional assessment of personality functioning. METHODS: We included 136 patients aged 13 to 17.9 years with a categorical PD diagnosis and 35 healthy control (HC) adolescents to assess the applicability of the Structured Interview for Pe

Increasing the Flexibility of Implicit Personality Assessment: An Examination of a Universal Assessment Procedure of the Self.

The current studies systematically examined a new version of the Questionnaire-Based Implicit Association Test (qIAT), which minimizes the differences between direct and indirect modes of assessment. Studies 1a (N = 276) and 1 b (N = 238) tested a method that enables an indirect assessment of questionnaires that include only non-reversed items. Studies 2a (N = 255) and 2 b (N = 284) tested a task that substitutes the problematic construct-related category labels with generic, universal categories. These studies, which focused on extraversion, supported the feasibility, reliability and validity

A new tool to assess the occurrence of personality traits: the Phenomenological Personality Factor questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are patterns of thoughts, feelings and actions that are usually assessed by means of psychometric questionnaires. In the present study we described the Phenomenological Personality Factor (PPF), a short questionnaire assessing the personality traits, taking into account the different interpretative models of personality. METHODS: A sample of 554 healthy subjects (357 female; 197 males) aged 18-60 years were enrolled. Each participant was required to complete PPF, by indicating the presence/absence of the individual personality trait, and the Italian version of t

Assessing the Effects of Healthy and Neuropathological Aging on Personality with the Iowa Scales of Personality Change.

Personality changes in older adults with brain disease may be confounded by effects of normal aging. In this cross-sectional study, ratings with the Iowa Scales of Personality Change for 62 healthy older adults (OA-H, aged 60+) were compared to matched older adults with brain diseases (OA-BD). OA-H did not show any significant personality changes from middle age to older adulthood. However, between 10% and 20% of OA-H developed a disturbance in Lack of Stamina, Inflexibility, Lability, and Lack of Insight. Otherwise, the pattern of findings suggesting normal aging effects on personality distur

Measuring Zoo Rhino Personality: Investigating Methods of Assessment and Relationships to Behavior.

Animal personality impacts how animals experience and perceive their surroundings. Understanding how to reliably assess and incorporate animal personality is important for species management. This study aimed to investigate three personality assessment methods in zoo-housed white rhinoceros (response to a novel object, response to a novel sound, and trait ratings by knowledgeable informants), compare the personality profiles generated by these methods and then investigate their relationship to activity budgets to determine instrument validity. This study was undertaken on 12 unrelated Southern

Personality in Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus apella): Comparison of Assessment Methods and Constructs.

Understanding personality in nonhuman primates is critical for advancing theories of individual differences, yet methodological variation remains a major challenge. We examined whether three commonly used approaches-questionnaire ratings, behavioral observations, and experimental tests-capture stable and overlapping personality constructs in 26 captive tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella). Using Bayesian multivariate mixed models, we retained individual variability to assess temporal stability, cross-context consistency, and inter-method convergence. Behavioral observations revealed concep

Disrupted continuity in borderline personality disorder: a systematic assessment of temporal experience.

BACKGROUND: Phenomenological literature describes borderline personality disorder (BPD) as marked by instantaneous and immediate temporal experience. Meanwhile, qualitative clinical findings suggest that BPD lived experience is dominated by a negatively biased, disorganised past and an overintense present, yet systematic research remains limited. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, with 52 inpatients diagnosed with BPD compared to a healthy control group (N = 98). To examine temporal experience in individuals with BPD quantitatively, this study uses the Transdiagnostic Assessment of Temporal Exper

Personality assessment inventory (PAI) in forensic and correctional settings: A comprehensive review.

As Forensic Psychology continues to expand as an independent field, professionals regularly resort to psychological assessment tools to assess people involved within the justice system. The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is a 344-item, self-report inventory that aims to provide meaningful information for diagnosis and clinical decision-making, specifically relating to psychopathology, personality, and psychosocial environment. Its applicability in forensic settings has been increasingly recognized on account of its benefits in comparison to other self-report inventories (e.g., MMPI-2,

Threats to Objectivity in Risk Assessment for Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is unique in many ways from other diagnoses contained in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Most salient, however, are the negative connotations often associated with the label itself and the resulting bias of providers. The ways in which these biases manifest are especially problematic in violence risk assessment, wherein evaluators are tasked with systematic consideration of data, with most data coming from available records. In this article, we describe some of the ways in which bias and objectivity are encountered in ri

Personality assessment inventory sex differences in people with epileptic and functional seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is useful in differentiating individuals with functional seizures (FS) from those with epileptic seizures (ES). In these two groups, sex differences in PAI validity and clinical subscales have not been investigated. Elucidating sex differences could improve the understanding of how males and females experience FS or ES and may improve differential diagnosis and treatment planning. METHOD: We examined sex differences across PAI scales, subscales, and validity profiles amongst adults with FS (n = 62) and ES (

Practice Assessment Tool for the Care of Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a long-term pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, unstable self-image, marked impulsivity, and/or affective instability. In addition, these features can be evidenced by efforts to avoid real or feared abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, mood reactivity, recurrent self-injurious or suicidal behavior, other impulsive behaviors with potential for self-damaging effects, intense anger or difficulty with anger control, and transient paranoid ideation or stress-related dissociative symptoms. BPD is associated with subs

Personality traits and transition to psychosis one year after the first assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have identified ultra-high-risk criteria that may characterize an at-risk mental state and predict the transition of psychotic evolution. Personality traits may play a crucial role in this process. AIMS: The current study aims to: (a) explore the evolution of an initial diagnosis over 12 months; (b) assess differences in social and occupational functioning; (c) identify common (trans-diagnostic) personality traits of psychotic risk. METHODS: The sample includes 97 (44 males and 53 females) young adults. They completed an assessment that consists of socio-demogra

Context-Driven Variability in Personality and Interpersonal Behavior: Evidence-Based Assessment Strategies.

How can assessors capture context-driven variability in personality and interpersonal behavior in ways that are both empirically sound and clinically useful? Scott et al. (2021) offer one potential solution as they discuss the Relational Self-Schema Measure, designed to assess variations in the self-schema across different relationship domains (e.g., self-with-parents, self-with-friends). This Comment outlines an evidence-based framework for assessing variability in personality and interpersonal behavior, describing three strategies that may be used by practitioners in the clinic and beyond. Personality assessment inventory items in relation to patient- and therapist-rated alliance.

Based on the results of prior research, we examined relationships between Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) items on clinical scales of antisocial features (ANT) and anxiety-related disorders (ARD) with patient- and therapist-rated alliance early in treatment (third or fourth session). We also explored the relationship between the PAI treatment rejection scale (RXR) and early session therapist-rated alliance, despite null findings in previous work. We used PAI protocols from a clinical outpatient sample (N = 80). Data were analysed using backwards linear regressions. Results indicated tha

Psychometric characteristics of the Dutch Personality Assessment Scale in Papiamento-speaking prisoners.

BACKGROUND: Although personality disorders are common among offenders, there is no validated translated questionnaire for the assessment of personality disorders in Papiamento, a Portuguese-Spanish influenced creole language, which is widely spoken on the former Dutch Antilles. AIM: To evaluate the Dutch Personality Scale as translated into Papiamento in the prison of Bonaire. METHODS: The Dutch Personality Assessment Scale was translated into Papiamento by two independent experts and retranslated back into Dutch by two other fully bilingual and independent experts. Personality assessment inventory profile and predictors of elevations among dissociative disorder patients.

Assessing patients with dissociative disorders (DD) using personality tests is difficult. On the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 ( J. N. Butcher, W. G. Dahlstrom, J. R. Graham, A. Tellegen, & B. Kaemmer, 1989 ), DD patients often obtain elevations on multiple clinical scales as well as on validity scales that were thought to indicate exaggeration yet have been shown to be elevated among traumatized individuals, including those with DD. No research has been conducted to determine how DD patients score on the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; L. C. Morey, 1991 ), which include

External validity of the personality assessment inventory (PAI) in a clinical sample.

This study contributes to the ongoing construct validation of the personality assessment inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991 , 2007 ) by identifying nontest life-event correlates of the PAI full scales and subscales in a sample of psychiatric patients. The life-event data used in this study included education, marital status, and employment, as well as a history of suicide attempts, psychiatric hospitalizations, trauma, medical problems, hallucinations, paranoid ideation, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and arrest. Correlations were calculated to explore the convergent and discriminant validity of the PAI

Examining the construct validity of the Personality Assessment Questionnaire for ICD-11 (PAQ-11) personality trait domains in a community sample.

The ICD-11 has a new diagnostic system for personality disorder, which includes five optional trait specifiers to characterize the diagnosed pathology. The current study evaluated the internal structure and construct validity of the Personality Assessment Questionnaire for ICD-11 (PAQ-11) personality trait domains in a US population-representative community sample. An exploratory factor analysis revealed the support for a four-factor model underlying the 17 PAQ-11 items, reflecting four of the five ICD-11 trait domains (Negative Affectivity, Detachment, Disinhibition and Anankastia). Moreover,

[Assessment of pathological personality traits and gender characteristics by Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in a psychiatric and a normal sample].

INTRODUCTION: The DSM-5 describes two types of classification of personality disorders: a categorical and a dimensional classification. The alternative model of personality disorders in the DSM-5 determines new diagnostic criteria for personality disorders with a criterion B describing the presence of pathological personality facets. For the assessment of these domains and facets, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) was created. METHODS: A sample of patients receiving psychiatric care (n=239) and a normal sample (n=226) were involved in the study. The two samples did not differ signif
