Developing a Personalized Approach to Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

All areas of medicine are focused on developing a personalized approach to diagnosis and treatment of specific conditions. This is based on the fundamental concept that all subjects with apparently the same disorder are different. There are multiple reasons for these differences. These include differences in the sequence of DNA, differences in the environment, differences in epigenetics, some of which may be driven by environmental differences and differences in the microbiome. These different factors will result in variations in multiple aspects of the phenotype. This includes different pathw

Dendritic cell development: A personal historical perspective.

Dendritic cells(DCs) were once considered as a single cell type closely related developmentally to macrophages. Now we recognise several subtypes of DCs and have outlined several different pathways that potentially lead to their development. This article outlines some of the research findings that led to these changes in perspective, from the point of view of one of the participants.

Developing an institutional cancer biorepository for personalized medicine.

High quality human biospecimens, such as tissue, blood, cell derivatives, and associated patient clinical information, are key elements of a scientific infrastructure that supports discovery and identification of molecular biomarkers and diagnostic agents. The goal of most biorepositories is to collect, process, store, and distribute human biospecimen for use in basic, translational and clinical research. A biorepository serving as the central hub provides investigators with an invaluable resource with appropriately examined and characterized biospecimens with associated patient clinical infor

Personality development: an introduction toward process approaches to long-term stability and change in persons.

This special issue is concerned with the systematic transformation of persons and personalities as they move through their lives. The focus is on developmental processes early in the life course that influence both long-term stability and change. Contributors represent diverse topics and viewpoints, but offer new data on classical issues of personality, including trait structure, self-regulation and internalization, self-evaluation, and self-efficacy. In addition, the issue includes empirical contributions on newer approaches to bullying, developmental processes in psychopathology, the influen

Personality trait change in three sub-Saharan countries: Normative development and life events.

Over the last 20 years, personality development has become one of the most widely studied topics in personality science. However, evidence on normative and event-related personality development stems almost exclusively from Western countries, providing limited insight into the cross-cultural generalizability of personality trait changes. To address this limitation, we used data from the Africa Long Life Study to examine personality development in young adults from Kenya, Namibia, and South Africa over 1-2 years (N = 2,301). We found that the cross-cultural Big Two personality traits-Agency and

Development and initial validation of Personality Disorder Syndrome scales for the MMPI-3.

The purpose of the present study was to revise and update the MMPI-2-RF personality disorder (PD) syndrome scales for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3). Study 1 describes the development of the MMPI-3 PD syndrome scales in three separate samples of community participants (n = 1,591), university students (n = 1,660), and outpatient mental health patients (n = 1,537). The authors independently evaluated each of the 72 new MMPI-3 items and rated them for appropriateness for scale inclusion and used various statistical procedures for final item selection. Ultimately, all 1

Development of a screening algorithm for borderline personality disorder using electronic health records.

Borderline personality disorder (BoPD or BPD) is highly prevalent and characterized by reactive moods, impulsivity, behavioral dysregulation, and distorted self-image. Yet the BoPD diagnosis is underutilized and patients with BoPD are frequently misdiagnosed resulting in lost opportunities for appropriate treatment. Automated screening of electronic health records (EHRs) is one potential strategy to help identify possible BoPD patients who are otherwise undiagnosed. We present the development and analytical validation of a BoPD screening algorithm based on routinely collected and structured EH

The development and psychometric evaluation of the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory-15.

The Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory (CBF-PI), a 134-item self-report scale, and its 40-item brief version (CBF-PI-B) are sound psychometric instruments used to measure the Big Five personality domains in the Chinese population. However, their applicability is limited by their length, as well as restricted by assessment conditions. In this study, we developed and validated a new shortened version with 15 items (CBF-PI-15) through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis in a large sample (Sample 1) of 10,738 Chinese adults (mean = 33.90 years, SD = 9.39 years, range 1

An attachment-based framework for disordered personality development: Implications for intersubjective psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Infant-caregiver dyads show high heterogeneity in terms of compatibility. Several lines of evidence indicate that the modalities by which areas of good and poor fit were emotionally recognized and managed by caregivers influence the infant's personality development, the integration of their personality traits, the overall sense of authenticity, as well as the modalities of transference that typically manifest during psychodynamic psychotherapy. Within an intersubjective framework, the relationship between patient and psychotherapist will inevitably recreate compatibility issues, although the s

The Norwegian network for personality disorders - development, contributions and challenges through 30 years.

BACKGROUND: Established in 1992, the Norwegian Network for Personality Disorders (The Network) is a clinical research collaboration of specialist mental health and addiction services in Norway. Its primary focus is to facilitate systematic and relevant clinical assessment for patients with personality disorder and evaluate progress in psychotherapeutic treatment. However, large-scale data registers for personality disorder are still unique. This article presents the circumstances that led to the establishment of the Network, and its development and challenges in many areas, and through various

Arts and psychomotor therapies in personality disorder treatment: An appropriate therapeutic entrance to personal development: A commentary.

Personality disorders (PD) are based not just on maladaptive ideas about self and others, they also are grounded on embodied patterns of behaviors and reactions to interpersonal stressors. There is growing interest in working with the body and through the body so to address automatisms that lead to suffering and dysfunctional social action. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology: In-Session the use of art and psychomotor therapies for these patients was explored by seven different clinical perspectives. Patients described presented with different PD and associated symptoms. The ar

Development of cream bases suitable for personalized cosmetic products.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The individualization of cosmetic products or personalized dermatology preparations are in great demand at the present time. METHODS: 24 emulsifying cream bases were proposed which were prepared by the classical, automatic and semi-automatic methods, respectively, and the physical stability resulted from the three types of homogenization was taken into account. Texture parameters were also studied for the most stable cream bases in the preformulation stage and the t - statistical test was applied. In order to choose the most optimal preservative, the effectiveness of the

Development of personalized molds for neovagina creation by 3D printer.

OBJECTIVE: Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as Rapid Prototyping, is a set of production technologies used in the synthesis of a particular physical object by adding layers to form a part based on data generated by Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. These technologies are widely used to quickly create prototypes of products and tools for commercial purposes. Over time, it has also been integrated with other areas, such as healthcare, since these tools have allowed health professionals to assist in diagnoses, surgical planning, and synthesis of orthoses and prostheses for patient rehab

Cardiovascular risk in persons at risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk which may start even before diagnosis. To explore this CVD risk prior to RA, we determined multiple risk factors and two 10-year clinical risk scores in a cohort of individuals at-risk of RA. We also analyzed associations with arthritis development and autoantibody status and compared a subset of at-risk individuals to an age and sex matched seronegative control group. METHODS: In a cohort of 555 consecutive arthralgia patients positive for rheumatoid factor (RF) and / or anti-citrullinated

Development of a person-centered conceptual model of perceived fatigability.

PURPOSE: Perceived fatigability, reflective of changes in fatigue intensity in the context of activity, has emerged as a potentially important clinical outcome and quality of life indicator. Unfortunately, the nature of perceived fatigability is not well characterized. The aim of this study is to define the characteristics of fatigability through the development of a conceptual model informed by input from key stakeholders who experience fatigability, including the general population, individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), and individuals with fibromyalgia (FM). METHODS: Thirteen focus gro
